Welcome to Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church

As people made one in the waters of baptism, we believe our faith is strengthened by diversity in a community that welcomes all people. We celebrate God’s unconditional love

and respond joyfully to your presence here.

All are welcome. You are welcome.

Here are some notes about our church and our facility that you might find helpful.

Restrooms are located on the sanctuary level just past the library. In addition to men’s and women’s rooms there is a family room with a changing table.

The Count-Me-In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. You can make special prayer requests on the back of the form, as well as indicate interest in special events and volunteer opportunities. Place the form in the offering plate as it is circulated during the service.

The Grace Station is where you will find current newsletters and program information. Look for the check-in desk in the church gathering area. A staffed nursery is available for children from ages birth through 5 years on this same floor, down past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents return to the nursery to gather their children

before the communion meal so they can come to the table together. An usher will be glad to direct you.

If you prefer to have your child in worship with you, but are worried they might disturb the service, we have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You can hear and see much of the service from there.

For older children in worship, we offer busy bags (found on the wooden coat tree in the narthex) and activity pages (found next to the basket of worship bulletins).

Hospitality bags: You’ll see a sign at the Grace Station in the Narthex that says “Hospitality Bags.” Visitors please feel free to pick one up to take home before you leave! We hope you come again soon.

Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church is a Reconciling in Christ congregation.

Check out the parish website www.prlc.org for more information about Phinney – our common life, ministries and many opportunities for service and faith formation. You can also find us on Facebook: “Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Community.”

We worship every Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m.

Pre-Service Music

8:30 My Jesus, My Eternal Joy – Johannes Brahms

11:00 Tu es l’image et l’ésperance – Jacques Berthier

Welcome

Silence precedes the prayer of confession.

Confession and Forgiveness

Please stand at the ringing of the bell and face the ministers.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who is present, who gives life, who calls into existence the things that do not exist. Amen. If you were to keep watch over sins, O Lord, who could stand? Yet with you is forgiveness, and so we confess. Silence is kept for reflection. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned away from you, knowingly and unknowingly. We have wandered from your resurrection life. We have strayed from your love for all people. Turn us back to you, O God. Give us new hearts and right spirits, that we may find what is pleasing to you and dwell in your house forever. Amen. Receive good news: God turns to you in love. “I will put my spirit in you, and you shall live,” says our God.

Jesus offers Nicodemus, not pat answers, but an invitation to life in God’s Spirit.

In this season of Lent, Christ invites us to rebirth in the things of God.

Where are you being called to a rebirth of wonder, wisdom, or love?

All your sin is forgiven in the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, who is the free and abounding gift of God’s grace for you. Amen.

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray. (silence) O God, our leader and guide, in the waters of baptism you bring us to new birth to live as your children. Strengthen our faith in your promises, that by your Spirit we may lift up your life to all the world through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Word

First Lesson — Genesis 12:1–4a

The Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Holy wisdom, Holy word. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 121

The congregation sings the following refrain at the direction of the cantor.

Gospel — John 3:1–17

The Holy Gospel according to St. John. Glory to you, O Lord. Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the king-dom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished

Jesus comes to bring salvation to the whole world.

God’s blessing upon Abram’s faith

Psalm 121 is depicted in the painting on the wall to the right of the ambo. This piece was painted by Richard Kemmerer, Jr.

that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not under-stand these things? “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that every-one who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Meal

Preparation of the Table and Offering of Gifts

8:30 For You Alone, O God, I Wait – arr. Andrew Birling 11:00 I Want Jesus to Walk with Me – arr. Ronald A. Nelson

Offering of Bread and Wine Please stand as the bread and wine are brought forward and sing:

Offering Prayer Let us pray.

(Silence) God our provider, you have not fed us with bread alone, but with words of grace and life. Bless us and these your gifts, which we receive from your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Page 9: Second Sunday in Lent...2020/03/08  · 4 All your sin is forgiven in the name of Jesus Christ, who is the free and abounding gift of God’s grace for you. Amen. Greeting The grace

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Page 10: Second Sunday in Lent...2020/03/08  · 4 All your sin is forgiven in the name of Jesus Christ, who is the free and abounding gift of God’s grace for you. Amen. Greeting The grace

10

O God, Creator of our wilderness world, O God, Savior of the lost, O God, Comforter of the sick and suffering, we give you thanks for your everlasting might; we glorify you for your covenant of mercy.

For forty days you cleansed the earth with the waters of the flood. For forty days you illumined Moses with the words of your law. For forty years you fed your people with manna from heaven.

You became truly human in Jesus our brother. For forty days, with fasting and prayer, he renounced the power of the devil. On the night before he died he took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

We extol his life. Amen. We lament his death. Amen. We celebrate his resurrection. Amen.

Transform us, O God, with your lively Spirit. Make this food into manna for our journey, the body and blood of your Son. Grant us with the Ninevites forty days of repentance. Teach us your words of wisdom and justice. Renew the whole earth with baptismal grace. At the last, lead all your pilgrim people through our deserts to your Easter garden.

To you, O God, Creator, Savior, Comforter, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be our worship and praise, adoration and thanksgiving, now and forever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive

those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For

the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across

the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would

like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any

need, the minister will pray with you.

A Prayer for this Week God of Abraham and Sarah and Hagar, God of Ishmael and Isaac, to many generations we still carry stories, and know the names and honor our ancestors. Send us through Lent like Abraham, traveling by faith, leaving other gods behind, bound for glory.

Announcements Adult Forum: Edible Hope Kitchen and

Partners in Ministry Today, 10:00am in the Tree of Life Room

Along with a few volunteers from our con-gregation, the Program Director of Edible Hope, Sara Bates, will talk about feeding our most vulnerable neighbors each morning, Monday through Friday at St. Luke’s Episco-pal Church in Ballard. They will share the joys, struggles, and an open invitation to join in this ministry. Please join us in the Tree of Life room downstairs.

Adult Forum: Signs of Life – Water March 15, 10:00am in the Tree of Life Room

The first of a three-part Lenten series based on the Gospel readings. With the Samaritan woman we explore the gift of water and our baptismal dying and rising with Christ.

Chancel Choir in Lent and Easter Are you interested in singing in Chancel

Choir for Lent, Holy Week and/or East-er? You are welcome! Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm in the choir room. Start attending now to be ready for Holy Week!

Soup Makers Wanted for Lent A Phinney Lenten tradition is to share a

simple soup lunch together after a mid-day worship service on Wednesdays from Feb-ruary 26 to April 8. We are looking for two volunteers each Wednesday to make the soup, and a few special volunteers to help organizers Monica and Jeff Hartley with “lunch management.” Please sign up on this morning’s COUNT ME IN if you can help! Also, this year Phinney will be host-

ing the Chrism Mass for the local churches on Tuesday, April 7. We will be serving a soup lunch for the attendees, so we will need four volunteers for that day.

Put Me In, Coach? Would you be interested in forming a

PRLC softball team? We’ve been invited to field a team in a co-ed church league that plays Monday evenings in Bitter Lake. Everyone high school age and up is eligible. We hear the league is not overly competitive and values fun over performance. Please mark your COUNT ME IN form if you’re in-terested and we’ll be in touch!

Lenten Devotional Books Books of Lenten Devotions are availa-

ble at the Grace Station. “Into a New Land:

A Journey for Lent” for adults is offered

for the suggested donation of $5. All pro-ceeds will benefit The Circle of Welcome program.

Also available are free copies of “Feast

on This,” a devotional for Lent for children

and families.

Circle of Welcome Update It’s hard to believe that the refugee family

we are supporting has been with us for 90 days. Our young family has four chil-dren. Aryan is eight, in second grade, and loves school. Kayenat is four-and-a-half and loves pre-K. These two children are picking up English language quickly, and try out new words whenever we visit them. That applies to 20-month-old heart stealer Asenat as well. She wears little purple glasses and has an in-fectious smile. Rohan is eight months old,

adorable, and mobile! Shir is a wonderful

father who attends Edmonds Community College four days a week for four hours a day while also looking for work. Mother Shabnam is also working hard to learn Eng-lish. Our volunteers are impressed with how great a team Shir and Shabnam make as they juggle all the needs of their family.

We have six to eight volunteers who see to child care, meeting accompaniment, and transportation. It is such a pleasure to work with these wonderful and generous people. We would also welcome financial dona-tions between now and Easter to help us meet the monetary component of our Circle of Welcome commitment. Checks can be made out to PRLC with “Refugee Minis-try” in the memo line. Thank you for sup-porting this mission!

Phinney Family Camping Trip Mark your calendars for July 24–26 for the annual Phinney Family Camping Trip at Camp Lutherwood south of Bellingham! All are welcome, but families with children under 12 are especially encouraged to at-tend. Stay tuned for signup details this spring. Contact Kara Kalenius Novak at [email protected] with questions.

Lenten book for 2020: Still Hungry at the

Feast

Join us after dinner at Bread for the Journey in March as together we reflect on the book Still Hungry at the Feast: Eucha-

ristic Justice in the Midst of Affliction. Writ-

ten by PLU professor Samuel Torvend, this book invites us to expand our experi-ence of Holy Communion beyond a per-sonal encounter with Christ to a commu-nal encounter that is inextricably linked to

matters of justice, care for creation, and

solidarity with the poor. Copies are now available at Phinney Books—ask for the Phinney Lent book. Our small group dis-cussion of the book continues Wednesday at 6:30pm.

Church Office Hours to Change Beginning in March, the church office

hours will be changing. We will be going to four days per week, Monday–Thursday

8:30–4:30; the office will be closed on Fri-days. Parish Administrator Christina Sun-stone will still be in to tend to business and answer phones and emails. Please contact her at [email protected] or 206-783-2350 with any questions or con-cerns.
