St. Francis of the Redwoods Big Sur, CA. 24.9 miles from intersection of Rio Rd and Highway 1 Mass Schedule Bilingual (Es/En) Mass: 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month, 5:00 pm.
On this first Sunday after the season of Christmas we are enjoined by the psalm to “Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.” Even though Christmas time may be behind us we are called to continue to rejoice in, and acclaim, the power and benevolence of our God. In the Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus’s first miracle, his first earthly act of power and benevolence. It is a lucky couple that invite Jesus and his mother to their wedding! Jesus initially demurs when his mother, Mary asks him to help. But like all mothers, she knows what is truly best, and continues her intercession, and he performs his first miracle, causing his nascent disciples to begin to believe that he truly is the Messiah. All this began with a simple invitation, extended and accepted. Sometimes, all that is required for God to begin a miraculous work in our own lives is that we invite God into our hearts and minds; the promise of our faith is that God will always accept our invitation.

LITURGICAL VAULT
LITURGICAL VAULT “The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves;
it is His work; He is the subject; and we must open ourselves to Him” (Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).
INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began in 1908 as the Octave of Christian Unity and focused on prayer for church unity. The dates of the week were proposed by Fr. Paul Wattson, co-founder of the Graymoor Franciscan Friars. He conceived of the week beginning on the Feast of the Confession of Peter, the Protestant variant of the ancient Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter, on 18 January, and concluding with the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle on 25 January.
Pope Saint Pius X officially blessed the concept and Pope Benedict XV “encouraged its observance throughout the entire Roman Catholic Church”. Protestant leaders began observing a similar octave of prayer for Christian unity but leading up to Pentecost Sunday. In the 1940s, Protestant communities began observing the octave of prayer with the Catholic Church, from 18 – 25 January.
“The Catholic Church takes especially to heart the prayer her Founder offered to the Father the day before He suffered, ‘That all may be one!’, and therefore she strenuously encourages the faithful to pray without ceasing for the unity of Christians.
Almighty and merciful God, who wished to gather the scattered nations
into one people through your Son, grant that those who glory in the name of Christians
may put aside division and become one in truth and charity,
and that all men may be illumined by the true faith and brought together into the fraternal communion of
one Church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen”.

Fr. Juan Crespi Another friars buried at the foot of the main altar is Juan Crespi. Born in Majorca in 1721, he was an explorer of California, a Franciscan missionary, a historian and a close associate of Fr. Junipero Serra. He came to America in 1749 with Serra to work in the Missions.
In 1769, he joined the Portolá expedition to Alta California. As part of his tasks, Crespi authored the first written account of actual interaction with the indigenous population. The journals he maintained for those journeys and explorations are the primary historical documentation for early California.
He also participated in the two land expeditions to find Monterey. In August of 1769, they came across a lush river valley. Fr. Crespi named it the valley of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula thus providing a name for what is now California's largest city, Los Angeles. They failed to recognize the harbor of Monterey, but in one of the great ironies in Western History they discovered a far greater harbor for Spain and all posterity, San Francisco Bay. They also discovered and documented the first redwood trees in the Santa Lucia and Santa Cruz mountains.
He helped Fr. Serra establish the Mission in Monterey and in 1771, helped to move it to its present location along the Carmel River. He became Fr. Serra’s right hand man helping to found many more missions throughout California.
Fr. Crespi continued his travels. He explored “La Contra Costa” (the other coast) of San Francisco Bay and also discovered the Sacramento River Delta and the San Joaquin River. Based on his recommendations, Madrid ordered the immediate settling of San Francisco Bay on the south side of the bay.
In 1781, Fr. Crespi began to succumb to cardiac and circulatory problems. He died on 1 January 1782 and was buried in the sanctuary of the Adobe Church. Fr. Serra's dying request was to be buried next to his companion, Fr. Crespi. They both now lie at the foot of the main altar of the Carmel Mission.
This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association

Junipero Serra School One of our most important parish ministries is our parish school which serves Preschool through 8th grade students. Families in this area have many outstanding educational choices for their children, and we are blessed with many members of our community who believe in the difference a Catholic education makes for their children and family. Junipero Serra School students develop their personal and spiritual strengths to become young adults who succeed in universities and colleges nationwide. While we experienced an unexpected decrease in enrollment, which required additional financial support from the parish in the last year, enrollment for preschool increased threefold. Also, the entire school has just completed a nationally recognized Catholic educational study which identified a strategic plan to rapidly increase enrollment and reduce the financial demands on the parish. While we are confident that the school will be self-sustaining within the next three years, we always welcome financial support from those of you who believe in the mission of Catholic education. Thank you for supporting our ministry of teaching tomorrow’s leaders today in faith, academic excellence, and service. Please contact me if you have any ideas for enhancing our wonderful school.
Store and Museums
Our store staff has developed and acquired attractive new inventory items. We invite our parishioners to make time to visit the store during this Christmas season. We are confident you will easily find unique items to choose from for your needs. While you visit the store, please make some time to visit the personal possessions of Saint Junipero Serra which are beautifully displayed in the museum along with an informative story board. Our other museums maintain one of the largest and best preserved collections of early California artifacts.
Crespi Parish Hall
We were able to complete the renovation of the kitchen and repurposing of a storage area into an office this year. The outstanding financial support to our AMA appeal, and well appreciated individual contributions to this project, allowed us to complete everything on budget. We are continuing with the renovation of the bathrooms and storage areas and have recently added excellent audio visual equipment, which will enhance every gathering of our parish and its ministries. More details to follow.
Our Lady of Bethlehem Statue
We are grateful to our Carmel Mission Docent Association and the CMF for directing their resources and passionate energies into the restoration of this most important historic statue.
Carmel Mission Foundation We are most grateful to the directors of and contributors to the Carmel Mission Foundation (CMF). Before the end of the calendar year they will fund a Mission grant which will help satisfy the Basilica retrofit loan. This past fiscal year they made grants which reduced the Basilica debt by 31%, contributed to the maintenance of the Basilica. We are pleased to announce that we have a parish representative on the CMF Board. The Foundation is actively working on fundraising for the remaining important phases of the restoration project. Their goal is to ensure the Carmel Mission remains a sacred place for all for another 250 years. Total grants to date are approximately $9M! We are most grateful for the Foundation’s efforts, grants and successes. We all pray for their continued success under a new Executive Director, Stephanie Zelei.

“Our Lady of Lourdes”
About Lourdes Lourdes is a small town in southwestern France that became famous for the Marian appearance of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1858. On February 11 of that year a beautiful lady appeared to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in the remote Grotto of Massabielle. The lady later appeared another 17 times, and identified herself as “the Immaculate Conception” and told Bernadette to tell people this: “I am the Immaculate Conception, go drink at the spring and bathe in its waters.”
Although no water was in plain sight, Bernadette began to dig in the area indicated by Our Lady and a spring began to flow.
Since 1860, the Roman Catholic Church has officially recognized 67 miraculous healings that have come to those who drank or bathed in Lourdes Grotto Water.
Today, Lourdes is the single greatest Catholic pilgrimage site in France, one of the largest pilgrimage and Catholic shrine sites in the world, and the single most famous modern shrine to Our Lady.
A Mission Marriage
On the weekend when our Gospel tells us of the first miracle of Jesus, which took place at a wedding at Cana in Galilee, I take this opportunity to thank our Wedding Coordinator, Loretta Hay and all the members of our Wedding Ministry. I also thank Laura and Tiffany for the world class music they provide. There are many people involved and I express my gratitude to each of you. You help to make each wedding here at the Mission, a wonderful and memorable occasion for the couple. We have once again gained an award as the best place to get married on the Monterey Peninsula. Without your great efforts, that would not happen.
Please keep working your own little miracles!
