ABOUT OUR PARISH

The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square.

The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location.

Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). In the meantime, an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there.

FEATURED NEWS

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception Thursday, December 8th, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception — a holy day of obligation. This is a feast on which Catholics have the obligation to attend Mass, and is also the patronal feast of the United States of America. On this feast, we celebrate our belief that from the moment of her conception (in the womb of her mother, St. Anne) Mary was preserved from Original Sin. We typically have an evening Mass at St. Patrick on holy days of ob-ligation. For the Immaculate Conception, the evening Mass will be on Wednesday (the vigil) so that we can have the Chazen Museum pilgrim-age on Thursday, December 8th. The complete Mass schedule for the holy day is as follows: Wednesday, December 7th—5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer (vigil) 7:00 pm at St. Patrick (vigil) Thursday, December 8th— 12:10 at St. Patrick 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer 7:00 pm at Holy Redeemer (in Spanish)

Immaculate Conception Pilgrimage Join us for a pilgrimage to the Chazen Museum on Thursday, December 8th, after the 5:15 pm Mass on the Feast of Immaculate Conception. "Facades" by Markus Brunetti is a beautiful exhibit of sixteen large high-resolution prints of European churches. The detail in these photos is extraordinary — almost as good as visiting them in person! Light re-freshments will be provided after Mass, followed by a 15-minute walk to the Chazen. A pamphlet with details about the artist and churches will be provided. Questions to Tracey Reitz: [email protected]. Reservations requested by Monday, December 5th. Please call the Parish office at 257-5000 or email [email protected].

Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration The Hispanic Community would like to extend to English-speaking pa-rishioners a special invitation to join in the festivities honoring Our La-dy of Guadalupe on Monday, December 12th. Mass will be celebrated in Spanish at 8:00 pm, preceded by songs beginning at 6:00 pm. After Mass, food will be available in the dining room. As is customary, the principal Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer on Sunday evening, the vigil of the feast, with Mass beginning at 10:00 pm so that it concludes around midnight. Bishop Morlino will preside “in choir.” Mass is followed by the singing of the mañanitas. Everyone is, of course, welcome to this Mass as well, but be advised that it is typically very crowded.

SVdP Little Drummer Gift Donations Due Today Thank you to everyone who participated in the St. Vincent de Paul Little Drummer Program this year. All gifts, unwrapped, should be placed un-der the Christmas trees at either St. Patrick or Holy Redeemer by this Sun-

day, December 4th. If you were unable to bring your donation today, you may take your Christmas gift directly to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 2033 Fish Hatchery Road. The gifts will be distributed on Saturday, December 10th, to families who were served by SVdP throughout this past year.

THE CATHOLIC HERALD

We have all seen the increasing importance of electronic communica-tion. Many newspapers and magazines now make their content avail-able on line – some of them abandoning print publication altogether.

That trend has now reached our diocesan newspaper. While still pub-lishing a print edition, the Catholic Herald is now fully available in dig-ital format – usable on laptops, tablets or smartphones. Subscribers to the e-edition receive an email each time a new issue is available.

The e-edition offers a table of contents, thumbnails of each page, a search function, bookmarks, and easy sharing of content on Facebook and Twitter. Of course, the size of the type can be easily enlarged by zooming in on a page. And back issues are archived.

The e-version of a sample issue of the Catholic Herald can be explored at eedition.madisoncatholicherald.org.

Access to e-edition of current issues of the Catholic Herald requires a password. All parishioners are eligible to register such a password.

By diocesan policy, the parish subscribes to the Catholic Herald (at a discounted rate) for all parishioners who would like to receive it. With the new option of an e-edition in place, the cost of the sub-scription is the same whether a parishioner receives the physical newspaper only, the e-edition only, or both.

In the January-February envelope packet that parishioners receive, there is an envelope for the Catholic Herald. The $25 contribution re-quested in that envelope reimburses the parish for the cost of your annual subscription to the Catholic Herald – print, electronic or both.

If you would like to register for access to the e-edition – or to make any adjustment to your Catholic Herald subscription – please use one of the blue forms provided on the parish kiosks, or send an email to [email protected].

You are invited to sign up for the e-edition – to replace the print edi-tion you have been receiving, or as an addition to the print edition you receive, or as a new subscriber. If you would like access to the e-edition, you will also need to choose a password (in addition to sup-plying your email address).

You may also become a new subscriber to the traditional print edition of the Catholic Herald. This requires a mailing address.

Again, subscriptions to the Catholic Herald are offered to all registered parishioners of the Cathedral Parish. But all who receive either the print edition or the e-edition are asked to help defray the cost by using the Catholic Herald envelope in your January-February envelope packet.

FAITH FORMATION

The Main Event Continues This Tuesday! December 6th—Fullness of Revelation: Jesus Christ

The Main Event is a weekly gathering of prayer, teaching, and discus-sion that seeks to explain the 'WHY?' behind many aspects of the Catho-lic faith and invite each of us to deeper discipleship of Jesus Christ. Our next session is Tuesday, December 6th, from 6:30-8:30 pm at St. Patrick Church. All adults are invited to join us as Msgr. Holmes helps us appre-ciate the great mystery of God-Become-Man in the Person of Jesus Christ! Check the website for more details, including the full schedule and topics of each gathering.

Catholicism 101 We offer a monthly 3-session overview of the Catholic Faith for adults at St. Patrick Church that occurs every other month. The series is intended especially for (1) those seeking a basic introduction to Christianity and/or the Catholic Church, (2) parents with a child to be baptized, and (3) couples preparing to be married in the Church. Session I will next be offered Tuesday, January 10th, with sessions II and III on the following two Tuesday evenings. Sessions begin at 6:30 pm.

No sabe-mos cuándo será.
