From the Pastor Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, be-cause of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But ac-cording to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace. 2Peter 3:11-17 St. Peter, in the passage above from our second reading this Sunday, urges us to be ready for the Day of the Lord through holiness, devotion, spotlessness, and peace. The end of it all is already upon us and our task is to prepare ourselves to meet the Judge of All. In light of the inanity of the world, the increase of senselessness and violence, and even some disconcerting things happening within the Church herself, we must learn to find peace in our relationship with the Lord for that is ultimately the answer to life's most profound questions. As Robert B. Greving writes: Let’s look at it another way: Has there ever been a time when the Church, from pope to parish priest to parishioner in the pew, was perfect? No. St. Paul seemed to spend most of his time straightening out squabbles and heresies. The first five hundred years (at least) of the Church’s history were spent ironing out a creed, and even then, at one time the majority (Arians) didn’t get it right. The Middle Ages saw the pope browbeaten to Avignon for nearly 70 years, and for 25 years after that we had three men claiming to be pope. The Renaissance? Let’s not go there. The 1600s had the Jansenists; the 1700s, the “Enlightenment” and the French Revolution. In the 1800s, the First Vatican Council had to be suspended because Italian troops were knocking at the door. The [C]hurch—in her members—has never been perfect. The Church has always had her troubles but at the same time the Church has always had her saints! And that's what you and I are called to be. Men and women who hold firm in faith no matter the storms that gale around them. In our day we have an increase of secularism, hostility towards that which is true, good, and beautiful, an increase in narcissism, and a terrible decline in faith among the younger generation in everything except their technology. How do we combat the incoming tide? By becoming saints ourselves. As the Lord has always raised up prophets and holy men and women in every age to announce the truths of salvation, today he wants to raise you up to be salt for the earth and light for the world. Now I have to admit I am a little slow when it comes to current events. I gave up watching or reading the news for Advent and I miss a lot of news items but I have found much more peace. Disconnecting from mass media and adding more time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and praying the rosary daily has made this first week of Advent very refreshing. I would encourage you to do the same. In fact, I would like to make you a challenge. As most of you know we have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament twenty four hours a day (except Sundays during Mass) in the chapel behind the sanctuary. Could I call on each of you to take one hour a week or even a month in prayer before the Lord? You can sign up for that hour at your convenience. Would you also add a rosary each day for the pope, bishops, and clergy? Lord knows we need your prayers! In the end we remember that saints are made of the stuff of God. We become saints by concerning ourselves not with the passing things of this world but with the eter-nal, enduring things of God.

No vayamos allí.
