TALLer Tales

Cooking for Thanksgiving: Thankfully, my family didn’t moan too much when they heard that I was doing the turkeys and stuffing this year. The saving declaration to my family (actually my get out of jail card) was: “But remember, I’m also bringing a bunch of great desserts from Bommarito’s.” That usually keeps them quiet!

My journeys to Kroger are always interesting when I shop for a big meal like Thanksgiving. I wish I was a bit more organized because I usually end up going to the store two or three times before I can start cooking. There’s always something I’m missing. As I was figuring out what I needed to buy for the 2016 Thanksgiving Day Extravaganza, I discovered that many of my spices had “use by” dates that were pretty old, some dating back to 2014! I’ll admit, the “use by” and “sell by” dates get pretty confusing. Even though I thought they were “ONLY spices,” I didn’t want to take the chance that my spices would be the reason for a 2016 Thanksgiving Day Debacle! So, one of my Kroger tasks was to replenish my many spices. That almost became paralyzing because there were so many choices. Is red pepper the same as cayenne pepper?

Now as for the turkeys, I purchased them on a shopping trip a week before Thanksgiving. I got them early enough so they had enough time to thaw. I’ve had problems in the past with thawing turkeys in my refrigerator because where I place them turns out to be the coldest part of my refrigerator. I remember one year that my turkeys were still pretty frozen on the day I was supposed to start cooking them. Talk about paralyzing a novice cook! But this year I decided to move the turkeys from deep freeze to the refrigerator on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

With turkeys in place, spices bought and ingredients all ready for the great beginnings on Thanksgiving morning, I was now ready. After I opened the church at 6 a.m. that morning, I returned to my kitchen and began the preparations for the 2016 Thanksgiving Day Extravaganza. Out came the first turkey. After cutting the bag and with the turkey in hand, I started to panic. There were still ice crystals on the inside of the turkey cavity and it was still somewhat frozen in several areas. UGH! So my washing down of the turkey also served as a “let’s help thaw this bird out” process! Once turkey number one was cleaned, prepped and buttered down, it made its way into the Reynold’s bag and was then coated with a mixture of apple juice and maple syrup. It was then sealed and returned to the refrigerator so turkey number two could be prepped. Once turkey number two was done (and thawed out), they both went into the oven (which was a challenge but some careful calculations and the finding of the right aluminum pans helped the process). Once they began the great process of being the best ever Thanksgiving Day turkeys, I turned my attention to the stuffing.

I had this stuffing recipe that I used several years ago when I went healthy on my family. I decided to give it a try again because it sounded good. After diligently following the recipe’s instructions, I began the tasting process. I wasn’t impressed at all. I tried a few more spoonfuls and

thought this was never going to pass. It just didn’t taste all that good. But I was now stuck. Do I go out to Kroger and buy more dry stuffing mix? I thought for a few minutes and then rummaged through my cupboards. There on the top shelf next to the expired butternut squash soup was a bag of country style stuffing. Hmmm. Upon inspection I found that the “sell by” date was January 2016. Sell by, use by … this is too confusing for a novice cook. Plus I already used all the celery stalks I had on hand. After some thought, I decided it was just dried bread that I was “bringing back to life.” Plus, I figured, I did BUY the bread prior to January 2016 and there was no “use by” date. And, come on, it was just dried bread. So to work I went trying my best to come up with some simple traditional stuffing minus a few ingredients. After it was prepared, I tried a few spoonfuls and decided it wasn’t all that bad. It tasted like stuffing with butter, onions and chicken stock (that’s all I had left). Since my stomach didn’t react to the tasting experience I figured it was good enough to move to the dinner table later in the day! After all, as I continued to convince myself, it was only dried bread!

Armed with all my contributions to our family’s 2016 Thanksgiving Day Extravaganza, I moved my stuff to the car so it could be transported to my parent’s house. Once at my parent’s house and after the Lion’s game (of course) we put everything together and began the great feast. I kept waiting for a Griswold Family moment with the food (especially the turkeys) but it never happened. No one got sick (amen). Everyone seemed to like it (amen again). All was good … even the long expired dried bread come back to life in the simple traditional stuffing. It was a great 2016 Thanksgiving Day Extravaganza! I hope yours was too!

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception: A Holy Day of Obligation: Please remember that Thursday is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation. A Vigil mass will be celebrated on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. On Thursday we will have masses at 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m. (the school Mass), 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m.

With the celebration of the Immaculate Conception “we recall that Mary, free from original sin, remained free of all sin throughout her life. This means that she always chose to be faithful to God’s will, even in the most difficult times. Mary was a human being who, as the Second Vatican Council taught, was on a ‘pilgrimage of faith.’ Even when her faith was tested she remained steadfast. As the Council also affirmed, she freely cooperated ‘in the work of human salvation through faith and obedience.’ She shows us what it means to be a follower of her Son. As we participate in the Eucharist on this December 8, we thank God for giving us the Blessed Virgin Mary as the pre-eminent model of discipleship and holiness (from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website: www.usccb.org).”

Enjoy the week. Know of my prayers.

In Christ,

Words on the Word December 4, 2016 – Places That Are Safe By Mike Chapp

Much has been written over the last several weeks about the creation at college campuses of so-called safe spaces, at which students can seek sanctuary or protection from the difficulties of the world. A recent story in The Detroit News provided details on such efforts at several of the state’s largest universities, including the types of amenities they offer to students. All of this has become highly politicized, to be sure, and the intent here is not to take sides on whether such protected places are necessary, helpful or advisable. Instead, we might simply pause a moment, in the middle of the ongoing debate, to assess our priorities and remind ourselves, again, that – safe spaces or not – there will al-ways be issues and circumstances in the world that are difficult to manage. And to likewise remind ourselves that real solace, and last-ing peace, ultimately can only come from God. And that when we seek God, we will find him. “Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid,” we hear in today’s first reading from the Prophet Isaiah. “The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. “The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra’s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.” Christmas is just three weeks away. As we get closer to celebrating the coming of the Lord among us, may we all remember that the safest place of all is in God’s loving care. © 2016, Words on the Word

Become a Volunteer

Many older and disabled adults in our community find them-selves faced with a variety of basic chores, yard work & minor repairs. For those who are frail or handicapped, have no family nearby, and are living on very low incomes, these tasks -- which most of us handle routinely -- are overwhelm-ing and impossible to manage. If you can rake leaves, put up storm windows, fix a leaky faucet or help with any other routine chores or minor home repairs, we need to hear from you. Even if you have just a few hours to spare once or twice a year, you can help a desperate neighbor remain in their own home a little longer. Work is arranged entirely around your schedule and near your home or office. Have a Heart. Be a Hero. Volunteer. MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Christmas Choir Here’s a way to keep Christ in Christmas: Join the Christ-mas Choir! The Christmas Choir will sing Midnight Mass (and Christ-mas Day if there’s enough interest). Made up primarily of members of all SJA music groups, it is open to anyone who sings. The commitment, limited to the Advent Season and Christ-mas Day, is two-fold. First, it means singing at the week-end liturgies of one of SJA’s regular music groups (see be-low) and attending weekly rehearsals. Second, it means singing with the Christmas Choir and attending two joint rehearsals toward the end of Advent. The time period is less than a month, beginning in the last week of November with rehearsal and ending with Midnight Mass (or a Christ-mas Day Liturgy). Below are short descriptions of SJA’s regular music groups.

St. Joan of Arc Choir is the large group of singers that ministers from the choir loft at 10:00 AM Mass and practices on Wednesdays, 7:15-9:15 PM. The choir’s rep-ertoire includes traditional and contemporary music.

The Guitar Group is a collection of singers and in-strumentalists that ministers year-round from the sanctu-ary at 4:00 PM. Saturday Mass, doing primarily contem-porary music. They practice Thursdays, 7:30-9:00 PM.

Anthems is a small group of singers who ministers from the sanctuary at the Sunday Noon Mass, doing pri-marily contemporary music. They practice Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 PM.

The Teen Choir is a group of teen-aged singers and instrumentalists. They minister from the choir loft at the 6:00 PM Saturday Mass. They practice on Saturday be-ginning at 4:30 pm. Their repertoire consists of traditional and contemporary music.

If you’re interested or want more information, talk to any member of these groups or contact Music Director John Perna by phone (586.601.1226) or by email ([email protected]), or by stopping him after any Mass.

If a nature show on TV depicted wolves playing with lambs, cows and bears living next door to each other, and a little baby romping with a deadly serpent, what would you think? These unnatural events might make you think you had

tuned into a science fiction program! Or you might wonder whether you were dreaming. The prophet Isaiah describes the peace that the Messiah will bring by reversing the hostile elements of nature. Listen for the animals the prophet mentions: the wolf and the lamb, the leopard and the "kid" (baby goat), the young lion and the calf are opposite kinds of animals (wild and farm animals). When these two kinds of animals get along together, then we will know that peace is here! We pray for this kind of peace to come into our world. The prophet dreams of the day when God's reign of justice and peace is established over all creation. That blessed event will become a reality at the end of the world when Jesus comes again in glory. What a hero Isaiah describes: the Spirit of the Lord-gifts we speak of at Confirmation-- are his; he wears faithfulness and justice as garments; he speaks up for the poor and all who are unjustly treated. He destroys evil and, yet, peace comes with him. We believe that the bud blossoming from the stump of Jesse is Jesus. Jesus came to us at Bethlehem; now we look for him to come at the end of time. Yet how can we be eager for his coming, knowing that he will judge us? Have you ever felt judged by someone, perhaps judged wrongly? This will not happen with Jesus: "Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide." Jesus urges us not to judge others. How can we leave the judging to Jesus, especially during Advent? Paul, in our second reading, reminds us we can find encouragement and guidance in God's word. "Accept one another, then, as Christ accepted you.” How does Christ accept us? How can we show acceptance of others? When are we tempted not to accept others? What "walls" do we build at these times and how can we dismantle them? Whom does the Lord ask me to welcome as Christmas approaches? Acceptance of others does not mean we must agree with everything they do. When we accept and love others as Christ does, we accept and love their true selves, even if we cannot agree with their decisions. Sometimes, for our good and theirs, we have to separate ourselves from the actions of others. For example, the prodigal father did not leave his farm to follow his wayward son. He waited with open arms and open heart for the son to return. Our gospel speaks of John the Baptist who was one of those preachers who did not mind stepping on people's toes-even those of the rich and powerful. His mission was to get people to repent and be baptized before the Messiah arrived. John warns the religious leaders of his time that they must produce good fruit as proof of their conversion. John the Baptist seems to be a believer in the saying, "Actions speak louder than words." He tells the religious leaders of his day, "Give some evidence that you mean to reform." John wanted everyone to be ready for the Messiah: no excuses! Are we really a follower of Christ or are we just jumping on the Advent-Christmas bandwagon

Religious Education

“O God, the time is short, these days are too few as we prepare for the feast of the birth of Mary’s son. Busy days, crowded to the brim, with long lists of gifts to buy and things that must be done. Show to us, your highly favored children, how to guard our hearts from noise and hurry’s whirl, so that we might hear your voice calling our hearts to create an empty space that might be pregnant with Heaven's fire. Quiet us within; clothe our bodies in peacefulness, that your Word once again may take flesh – this time, within us – as once it did in holy Mary, long Advent days ago. We pray all of this in the name of Jesus Christ, the one for whom we watch and wait this holy Advent season. Amen” In an age where we can get just about everything we desire in an instant, Advent is wonderfully old school. It’s four weeks of pressing the pause button. It’s taking a breath amid the chaos of searching for the perfect gift, decorating everything within reach, and stringing bright lights. Advent gives us time to think about the true light of the world. Use the library or your computer to explore the different feast days of Advent. One this week is December 6-the feast of St. Nicholas which celebrates the kindly bishop who tried to help the poor. Children remember this feast by setting their shoes out to be filled with treats—if they have been good. The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12) is a great time to honor Mary, learn about Mexican culture, and talk about ways God can surprise us in our lives. The feast of St. Lucy (Dec. 13) whose name means “light,” offers a timely evening to seek out and enjoy Christmas lights. Find the light around us—and don’t forget the ancient custom of the Advent wreath. It seems we are always anticipating the next electronic gadget, the next big thing to change our lives. This year, I want Advent to teach me who is truly worth waiting for. Have a Blessed Second week of Advent, Mrs. C the DRE
