The First Lesson: Acts 2:14a,22-32

Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd, “You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know— this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him,

‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;

moreover my flesh will live in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,

or let your Holy One experience corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life;

you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

“Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying,

‘He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.’

This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Second Lesson: 1 Peter 1:3-9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith-- being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire-- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel: John 20:19-31

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.

As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily Ed Horsley Nicene Creed Said by all; please stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, By the power of the Holy Spirit, he was incarnate from the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem Alleluia Music: Randall Thompson (1899-1984) Calvary Choir Archived Recording The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The people stand or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues…

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honorand glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

Lord's Prayer Celebrant: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, People and Celebrant

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, Now and for ever. Amen.

Today’s Music

During this Shelter-in-Place time, when Calvary’s worship services are being live-streamed, we are using the technology of the “Virtual Choir” to add hymns and service music to our worship. The Offertory Anthem is from Calvary Choir’s small archive of past recorded performances.

Announcements VIRTUAL COMMUNION: If you would like to participate in table fellowship, please have your elements (bread and wine are the most typical) present with you during the Eucharistic prayer. The blessing of Eucharist is a blessing that comes from the prayer and intention of the gathered community. Whether we are gathered in person or gathered as a worshipping community over live-stream, we are a community with the shared intention of worshipping and enacting sacrament together. Sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace (BCP, 857)—sharing of community, intention, and table fellowship during this time can certainly still be an experience of sacrament. SUPPORT: During this time of virtual-church, we have no way to pass the plate other than offering the option to donate online or mail in a check to Calvary. But we still need the support of the worshipping community to keep on track for making ends meet. Please feel invited to make an offering by clicking the "Donate" button below the Vimeo screen, or by mailing a check to the Calvary office: 532 Center Street, S.C., CA 95060. OFFICE CLOSURE: The staff has been asked to work from home, and the vestry will meet via video-conference on Thursday. Other committees are asked to please do the same. We have a paid-account on Zoom for hosting meetings—just ask Father Austin to set up the meeting as host so your committee can use it (there is also a free version that can host up to 100 people for 40 minutes if you plan on a short meeting). If you need pastoral care, or to contact any of the staff, please reach out via email or telephone. Father Austin: text or call 831-350-1344 or email [email protected]. Please text Nicole: 831-325-9390 or email: [email protected]. Bible Study with Father Austin Tuesdays at 11 am. Please email Father Austin directly ([email protected]) to ask to be included in the Zoom email list and to provide an email address for the invitation! Holy Eucharist Service with Father Austin Thursdays at 11:30 am. Please email Father Austin directly ([email protected]) to ask to be included in the Zoom email list and to provide an email address for the invitation! Spread the Word! As Calvary has moved online for the time being, we need help in spreading the word to all those who may be interested in attending—regardless of how far away they may be! We’ve had viewers from Spain, New York, Colorado, Utah, Montana, and Arizona—and those are just the viewers we know about. If you know of someone who isn’t on our calvary email address who might appreciate knowing about our Sunday service and other online (Zoom) gathering options, please spread the word! Outreach Sunday, April 19 -- Each month we focus on a Calvary outreach ministry and collect a special offering for 4 consecutive Sundays. This month we support the Calvary Preschool. The Preschool was started by the church in 1980 as an outreach to help homeless or low-income families. In 1997 the Preschool became its own independent nonprofit, but we continue to have a wonderful relationship. They are a treasured resource on our campus not only helping us in the care of our facilities, but also and most importantly serving as a valuable resource for families in Santa Cruz. It is critically important to support the Preschool during this current crisis so that they can return to service when this emergency is over. Make checks payable to Calvary noting Calvary Preschool on the memo line and send checks to the church office, 532 Center Street, Santa Cruz 95060. Please join in recognizing this important outreach ministry. Alternatives for Adult Forum – The Adult Education Committee has decided to suspend the regular Sunday morning Adult Forum for the time being. We recommend two alternatives: Join the weekly Bible study led by Austin on Zoom every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. This new program started at the beginning of the Bible and we are currently progressing through Genesis. You can jump in at any time as each week offers a new discussion. Another alternative is to take advantage of free courses offered through ChurchNext, an online learning platform featuring video courses led by expert teachers in scripture, theology, liturgy, and other important topics. Due to the unusual circumstances we find ourselves in today, ChurchNext launched a FREE 5-course class Prayer and Worship in Our Homes. In this course, you'll find 5 classes that teach different approaches to prayer. Some focus on particular types of prayer discipline. Others talk about reaching out and praying with others, even when we're physically isolated from one another. Courses include: Everyday Spiritual Practices with Keith Anderson How to Pray with Christopher Martin Praying with the Saints with Scott Gunn and Tim Schenck How to Pray Online with Karekin Yarian Praying the Anglican Rosary with Suzanne Edwards-Acton

Note that each lesson is followed by discussion questions. You can join in the worldwide discussion or simply read how others have responded. If you know others at Calvary who are participating, you might discuss by phone or email. Many thanks to ChurchNext for supporting us in our prayer lives during this situation. As they said in announcing the program, "God has given us a spirit of faith not fear." The Calvary Book Club will meet via Zoom on Friday, April 24 at 3:00 p.m. We will discuss Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others by Barbara Brown Taylor -- She "recounts her moving discoveries of finding the sacred in unexpected places while teaching the world’s religions to undergraduates in rural Georgia, revealing how God delights in confounding our expectations...Throughout Holy Envy, Taylor weaves together stories from the classroom with reflections on how her own spiritual journey has been complicated and renewed by connecting with people of other traditions—even those whose truths are quite different from hers. The one constant in her odyssey is the sense that God is the one calling her to disown her version of God—a change that ultimately enriches her faith in other human beings and in God." - from the publisher The book is available in paperback and can be ordered via Bookshop Santa Cruz or other book vendors. There are two changes from the BCP in the wording of the Creed as printed in Enriching Our Worship. One is inclusive language, the other reverts to the original form of the Creed, which is acceptable to both the Western and Eastern Church. The Anglican Communion made this change in 1978 at Lambeth Conference, but it was too late for printing in the 1979 BCP.
