WE ARE TO BE TRANSFORMED Today’s showing forth of God’s glory is filled with a light that astonishes and reveals. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The treasures of our tradition can often be traced to one source, but like the waters of a river branching out on its way to the sea, are received differently as they filter through various cultures and customs. Long ago, mostly because of the preparation of candidates for baptism, the annual feast of the Lord’s death and resurrection was preceded by a period of preparation. In the West that comes to us as Lent, a word drawn from the Old English word for springtime, referring to the lengthening hours of sunlight in this hemisphere. In the East, the tradition of preparing for Easter is received as “Great Lent,” to distinguish it from a secondary “Lent” preceding Christmas, and a two-week period, a kind of “pre-Lent,” that gradually introduces the faithful to the austerities of Great Lent. One of the major differences between East and West is in the vigor of the Lenten fast. In Great Lent the customs of fast and abstinence are far more strict than we are accustomed to. For us, meat is off our Lenten tables on Friday, but in the East, meat disappears from the diet completely, along with dairy products. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Always Forward, Never Back

Thank You for your Stewardship Your continued generosity for the weekend

February 13 & 14, 2016 totaled $10,002 and $984.62 in electronic contributions.

The Ash Wednesday collection for I-Help totaled $2,939. It is through your support that Carmel Mission continues its

mission of spreading the Word of our Lord. May God bless you all. —Fr. Paul, Pastor

2016 Annual Ministries Appeal (AMA) Last weekend was Pledge Sunday for the 2016 Annual Ministries Appeal. As you heard, this year’s appeal focuses on the theme Together, we proclaim God’s merciful love. This ties directly to Pope Francis’ declaration of this year as a Jubilee Year of Mercy. It is his desire to have our love for God reflected in our acts of love for one another, especially the weak and vulnerable. Supporting the Annual Ministries Appeal gives us an incredible opportunity to “show mercy to others” and touch the lives of those in our community. Our Diocese is blessed with sixteen ministries designed to strengthen families, inspire future generations and ad-vance church leadership. There has never been a more important time to support these ministries. Your contributions touch all of us. Every Catholic school student is impacted by these donations. Every confirmation class in the diocese is impacted by your donations. Every seminarian and deacon candidate is impacted by your donations. Every outreach to provide adult faith formation opportunities is impacted by your donations. And there are many more. These ministries are essential to our communities now! Our goal this year is to raise $54,000. 100% of the proceeds, up to that goal, will go toward support of these ministries. Any monies raised over this amount will be returned to our parish. Thank you to all who have returned their envelopes with donations or pledges. To date, we have raised over $7,500! We hope to have everyone participate to the extent they are able. If you have not made your commit-ment or donation, please do so this week. Through your support, you help bring to life the spiritual and corporal works of mercy in our parishes and in our Diocese. As Pope Francis says “A little mercy makes the world less cold and more just”. Together, we proclaim God’s merciful love. On behalf of Bishop Garcia, Father Paul and all your other parishioners we thank you for all of your support.

Carmel Mission Book Club News The Book Club will be starting its next selection, Church Fathers from Clement of Rome to Augustine, on Saturday, February 20, 2016. The club meets at 2pm Saturdays in MacMahon Center. All are welcome, and refreshments are served. There is no charge, but a good-will donation is welcome to cover the cost of the book and shipping. Written by Pope Emeritus Benedict VI, this selection is a rich and engrossing survey of the early Church, focusing on the followers of Christ immediately succeeding the Apostles, the “Apostolic Fathers.” This book is a wonderful way to get to know many of the prominent early Christians and the tremendous spiritually-rich legacy they have bequeathed to us. Interested? Want to know more? Call Deacon Bill at 646-0358.

Wheelchairs Available: Wheel-chairs are available in the Museum Gift Store for anyone needing mobility as-sistance while visiting. The irregular surfaces around the Mission can make it difficult for parishioners to get from their cars to the Basilica. Please let the staff know and they will be happy to assist you.

Theology on Tap Discussion on Islam! Theology on Tap offers fellowship and discussions about topics important in our lives today, with interesting speakers guid-ing the conversation, while enjoying your

favorite beverages and snacks. This month’s session will be on Wednesday, February 24th, 7:00 p.m. at London Bridge Pub, 256 Figueroa Street (at the foot of Wharf 2), Monterey. Our speaker will be Ken “Mehmet” Stewart, Commu-nity Outreach Coordinator for the Monterey Mosque, Masjid At-Taqwa, in Seaside. He will offer an Overview of Islamic Teachings and Its Relationship to Other Faiths. He has a Masters in International Studies (Middle East) from the University of Washington where he devoted his studies to an understanding of traditional Islam and wrote a thesis on authority within the Islamic tradition. His work focuses on building bridges of understanding between faith groups without comprising his Islamic val-ues. With the many conflicts in the world today involv-ing Muslim practitioners, and the many misperceptions about Islam here in the United States, this is a most timely topic. It’s important for us to understand other ap-proaches to Yahweh/Allah. This talk will be a great start! Join us to enjoy the discussion along with food, drinks, and friends! Questions? Contact Deacon Warren Hoy at [email protected] Hope to see you there!

The Altar Society will have its day of recollection on the March 10, 2016 from 9 a.m.—1:30 p.m. in Crespi Hall. It will be let by our very own Fr. Miguel. Bring your own bag lunch and join us. Please call Elinor Laiolo, 624-6011, with any questions.

Join us for Stations of the Cross in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel each Friday of Lent at 11:30 a.m.

SERVING THE BROADER COMMUNITY DURING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

As part of our recent Catholic Schools Week activities, students and staff participated in a walkathon to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on February 5th. Between sponsorships for their walking, a Student Council bake sale, online donations, and a contest to see something out of the ordinary at week’s end, the students raised about $5,000 to help support research to find a cure for Type I Diabetes. There was an informational rally to launch this service project and to educate students and staff about diabetes (both Types I and II) on January 25th. Pictured above are many of our students and 8th grade teacher Dee Rasco in the chicken costume at the end of the walk/run! Many thanks to the Dalton family for their lead-ership with this activity! The beautiful day was an added plus! ______________________________________________________________________________ A final thank you from the JSS FITA team for the support of so many parishioners in their Verizon App Challenge! The students finished Best in State and Best in Western Region—quite something for our parish school!
