Faith to Move Mountains is a $75 million Diocesan-wide endowment campaign that will secure the resources needed to enable our Church to flourish for genera ons to come. Unlike the Annual Catholic Appeal, which addresses the day-to-day opera ng expenses of the Diocese, this campaign will establish endowments to respond to cri cal long-term needs and serve as a permanent and self-sustaining source of financial stability for the Diocese. Once established, the funds will con nue to grow through the reinvestment of interest and earnings, as well as addi-

onal gi s. Through this, the endowments will provide support for the following needs in perpetuity: ♦ Our Parishes: $30 million ♦ Ordained Ministry: $20 million ♦ Catholic Schools: $15 million ♦ Social Services: $5 million ♦ Catechesis and evangeliza on: $5 million In addi on, 30% of the campaign funds that we raise toward our parish goal will be directed back to our parish for our local parish needs. We will use our share of funds for various projects including upgrade of the Lower Church, parking lot repairs, repairs of the mosaic and stained glass win-dows in the Upper Church, defibrillator equipment and training, restroom renova ons, I/T and security equipment purchases, and other uses. Thank you for your con nued prayers and support.

There are very few days in the Church year for peniten al abs nence from meat as a sacrifice. I am happy this year to give a specific group dispensa on from the Lenten abs nence require-ment for those a ending the Soup & Salad Supper at St. Michael’s Church on Friday, March 17, but ask our Catholics a ending that dinner/event to transfer the Lenten abs nence sacrifice to Thursday, March 16.

Respec ully yours in the Lord,

Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M., J.C.D. Bishop of Trenton

St. Patrick’s Day and Lent and Soup & Salad

The parish’s Len-ten Soup & Salad Supper on Friday, March 17 (preced-ing Stations of the Cross) will include a celebration of,

and a prayer to, St. Patrick. Accord-ingly, a specific group dispensation from the Lenten requirement of absti-nence from meat is given for those attending that specific event. They are asked to transfer their Lenten ab-stinence sacrifice to Thursday, March 16. Slainte! With prayers, Fr. John Butler, Pastor

Lenten Holy Hour

The Journey to the Cross

On the Mondays of Lent there will be a Lenten Holy Hour in the Upper Church as we prepare for Holy Week and Easter Sunday. The holy hour will include Eucharistic Adoration, Benediction, and Confessions. All are welcome.

March 13 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm March 20 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm March 27 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm

April 3 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm April 10 ~ 7:30pm to 8:30pm

Lent 2017

Our Lenten observances will include the following: • On Fridays during Lent, Mass will be cele-

brated at 12:15 p.m. in the Upper Church. The 8:00 a.m. Mass on Fridays remains un-changed.

• These Friday 12:15 Masses will be preced-ed by Confessions at the usual time (12 minutes before to 5 minutes before the Mass). Confessions will also be available after these Masses till 1:15 p.m.

• Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Fri-days at 7:30 p.m.

• A “Soup & Salad Supper” will be available on Fridays during Lent from 6:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. in the church basement. The supper will be open to all and prepared and served by parishioner volunteers. A free will offering will be gratefully accepted. These suppers are intended to make us mindful of foregoing a more substantial dinner on the Fridays of Lent in favor of a lighter meal that does provide sustenance while also highlighting the Lenten themes of sacrifice, self-denial, and penitential practices. Opportunities to (a) socialize with fellow parishioners and (b) get a quick bite to eat before going upstairs to the church for Stations of the Cross are also features of these suppers.

• Lenten Holy Hour on the Mondays of Lent beginning at 7:30 p.m.

• The parish’s Lenten Penance Service will occur during the week preceding Holy Week (date and time to be announced).

May our Lenten journeys nourish our minds and hearts, strengthen us against the chains of sin, and bring us closer to the Sa-cred Heart of Jesus.

Respect Life The St. Jerome-St Mary’s Respect Life Committee once again is inviting you to join them in the very important ministry of the “Forty Days For Life” spring campaign. It begins March 1 and runs through April 9, 2017. They plan on partnering once again, with other local par-ishes, conducting peaceful, prayerful protests at the Planned Parenthood facility on Newman Springs Rd. in Shrewsbury where abortions are taking place. The goal of this ministry is to save lives by immersing the area in prayer, thereby saturating the facility, staff, and patients with the love of Our Lord Jesus and His Blessed Mother in an attempt to stop the brutal murder of our most innocent and vulner-able…our babies!! “The Right to Life is the First Human

Right.” To date since this cam-paign began in 2007, there have been 12,668 documented babies saved, 143 abortion workers have quit, and 83 abortion centers have been closed! Life is an essential issue to all of us and as our Pope and Bishops are telling us, “as Catholics we have a responsi-bility to stand for Life”, espe-cially now! Please come, bring your rosary, a friend or two, and stand up for LIFE, Mondays for one hour between 8AM and 6PM at Planned Parenthood in Shrewsbury. In order to have adequate coverage, please call Mary Richards to sign up at 732-222-1562.

A Note from the Music Director...

During the season of Lent, the mu-sic for the Responsorial Psalm will differ from that which appears in the Seasonal Missalette. To create a musi-cal change reinforcing the change in liturgical seasons, we will sing a Com-mon Psalm. The Church offers us a number of options for text and music between the first two readings: “However, in order that the people may be able to sing the Psalm response more easily, texts of some responses and Psalms have been chosen for the

different times of the year or for the different categories of Saints. These may be used instead of the text corre-sponding to the reading whenever the Psalm is sung" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal #61). The Common Psalm is a text that has been chosen for its seasonal appro-priateness. Our Common Psalm will be Ps. 91:1-2, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15. The Re-frain, sung by all, is "Be with me Lord, when I am in trouble." Additionally, the Psalm and Gospel Acclamation will be sung a cappella - without instrumental accompani-

ment. Not only does the use of a cap-pella singing represent a change in mu-sical character, it is a deliberate Len-ten reduction culminating with an en-tirely a cappella Good Friday. “At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry.” (Matthew 4:1-2) In a small way, we're engaged in a bit of "musical fasting," waiting for a triumphant Easter Sunday.

YOUTH GROUP

About 5 years ago I discovered Real Faith T.V. and it changed our Youth Group forever. The show really connects with the

kids in a way that no other program has. The hosts of the show are their same age, so there is a connec-tion right away. The topics that are talked about are age appropriate and are spoken from a Catholic per-spective. I have been searching for other programs to use with my group and I always return to Real Faith T.V., which is a peer produced and faith driv-en teen talk show discussing modern issues facing young people.

This past summer our Youth Group was chosen to participate in the opening segment of one of their episodes. The topic was "Respecting God’s Crea-tion." The Youth Group members were inter-viewed and asked specific questions regarding this topic and how Faith plays a role. This was so excit-ing for our group members! We had a small lake cleanup as part of the segment.

Great job on the amazing turnout at our group meeting last week. We watched the episode of Real Faith T.V. that we appeared in. The kids were so excited to see themselves on T.V. and this is some-thing that we will continue to do each summer :)
