Hosting our Visitors from Kohima, India St. Thomas More Community hosted Fr. Melvil Pereira, SJ, Regional Superior, Fr.

Anand Pereira, SJ, Principal of St. Xavier High School, Provincial Assistant for

Formation, from Kohima, India, and Fr. Coelho SJ, from the Midwest Jesuits last

weekend. The Midwest Jesuits partner with the Kohima Region of India.

Our visitors were here to explore the possibility of establishing a parish to parish

partnership with a Jesuit parish and elementary school in Kohima with our com-

munity. (Photos are courtesy of parishioner, Mami Russell.)

The STM Library has been Updated and is Ready for You to Use! Our library has an expansive variety of books about our faith and our church; we have over 2,000 books in the library! The

library is located on the lower level of the Parish Center and is open between 3-4:30 pm on Saturday and 9-10:30 am on

Sunday. Just follow the sign in the ramp to the open door in the Parish Center basement. Library hours may change as we

determine the best opportunities for use. Come down and browse. Make your selection and sign out the book in the note-

book on the table. Return it to the same place when you have finished reading the book. There is no limit to the number of

books you may borrow, or the time you take to read them. New books will be added to the library, so check back often,

and leave us a note about a book you might like to have added to the library. Donations to the library are accepted - just

leave them in the designated space. To make access to books more available, there is a yellow cart with selected titles

found in the back of church. You can just sign out the book and then return it to the tote bag on the side of the cart. Ques-

tions or suggestions? Contact Nicole in the office: 651-227-7669 x 301 or [email protected].

Rooted in the Gospels and formed by Ignatian spirituality,

the mission of the Catholic Community of Saint Thomas More

is to glorify God by our lives.

Community & Opportunities

Lent & Holy Week Information & Schedule Be sure to pick up your Lent and Holy Week schedule,

available in the bulletin racks, entrances, and Community

Corner.

Individual Reconciliation

Fridays, 4:30 pm (Before Stations of the Cross) Individual Reconciliation will be offered before our 5 pm

Stations of the Cross (not offered on Good Friday).

Stations of the Cross

Fridays, 5 pm, until April 12 Pray the stations of the cross together and come to a

deeper appreciation of the Paschal Mystery through im-

aginative meditation. Stations will be offered at Noon on

Giving Up Plastic for Lent - Week 2 Try bringing your own coffee cup to

a meeting or event, or bringing your

own to-go containers to a restau-

rant when you anticipate there will

be leftovers. Styrofoam is an espe-

cially bad material for the environ-

ment. Keep in mind the words of

Pope Francis: “Living our vocation to be protectors of

God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue” (Laudato

Si, no. 217).

STM’s Capital Projects Committee STM has formed a Capital Projects Committee ("CPC") to

oversee the capital projects that were the focus of last

fall's capital campaign. Thank you again to all who partici-

pated in the capital campaign, and please know that we

are still accepting pledges. The CPC will meet monthly to

secure final plans, financing, and bids on the projects

identified in the capital campaign and to oversee con-

struction. During the February and March meetings, the

CPC focused on the identifying potential financing entities

and securing detailed construction plans.

Ignatian Silent Retreat for Women Registration is still open

for our two spring Ignatian

Silent Retreats for Wom-

en, April 25-28 and May

14-16, at Christ the King

Retreat House in Buffalo,

MN. April’s retreat will be

led by Fr. Roc O’Connor,

SJ, known to long time

IHM and St. Luke parish-

ioners. The May retreat

will be led by Fr. Patrick

McCorkell, SJ, Director of

Demontreville Retreat House for men. Brochures and regis-

tration forms are in the Community Corner and on our

website. Questions? Please contact Carol Arend, 651-227-

JustFAITH - What is Calling You? Our St. Thomas More Justice and Service Commission is exploring the option of forming small groups of people who gather

to pray, learn about issues, engage in deep conversation, and encounter the needs of the world. The JustFAITH material is

rooted in Catholic Social teaching and comprised of three phases, which explore caring for the poor, for each other, and for

earth. This 24-week program allows time for participants to form deep and lasting relations and will begin in September,

2019. If this is something that is of interest to you, please contact Brian: [email protected] or 651-227-7669 x

311. Please see their Mission and Vision Statements:

Mission: JustFaith Ministries is a nonprofit organization that forms, informs, and transforms people of faith by offering

programs and resources that sustain them in their compassionate commitment to build a more just and peaceful world.

Vision: JustFaith Ministries envisions a vast community of faithful people, transformed by the Spirit, and leading ex-

traordinary lives of compassion.

Opportunity to Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Are you interested in working with Habitat for Humanity this summer? St. Thomas More is considering partnership with

Interfaith Builders, a coalition of local faith communities that supports a Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity home building

project for two weeks each summer. Each Interfaith Builders congregation supplies 15-18 volunteers who each work on

home construction for at least one day during the two week period, occurring sometime late June to early August. No skills

or experience required! Volunteers must be 16 or older and all tools and training are provided by on-site build leaders.

This is an excellent opportunity to join fellow parishioners and members of our neighboring faith communities in serving a

family in need by helping them build safe, affordable housing. Daily work crews include volunteers from participating con-

gregations, often joined by the Habitat family, who must provide “sweat equity” in the build as part of their ownership re-

quirements. Builds are usually in St. Paul; many past builds have been within a few miles of our parish; the tentative build

dates are June 3-14. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Dick Lally at

[email protected].

CRS Rice Bowl - Journey to Uganda

Encounter Annet Annet’s youngest sister calls her Mom - and for good reason. Since their

parents’ deaths 4 years ago, 16-year-old Annet has been caring for her

three siblings: Gladys, 6, Irene, 8 and Emmanuel, 10. It hasn’t been easy.

Ongoing violence in their home country, South Sudan, forced Annet to take

her siblings and flee south to neighboring Uganda. It was a dangerous jour-

ney, but Annet kept them safe despite threats from rebel soldiers.

For more than 2 years now, Annet and her siblings have been living in Bidi

Bidi, one of the world’s largest refugee settlements. Formed in 2015, Bidi

Bidi is home to nearly 300,000 people - many South Sudanese who, like

Annet, fled for their lives to Uganda. While Annet is happy to be away from

the violence, life in Bidi Bidi is hard, especially for a young woman trying to

raise her siblings. That’s why CRS is building houses for families like

Annet’s. A place to call home means Annet can rest a little easier at night knowing her family is safe. But that’s not all. CRS

is also helping people like Annet learn to farm and is giving them the tools they need to succeed. Annet was given her own

plot of land to plant on so she will be able to continue providing for her siblings.

For her, that’s the most important thing. While she wants her family to return to South Sudan one day, for now she knows

that Bidi Bidi is the safer option. In the meantime, she encourages her siblings to go to school and does all she can to en-

sure they’ll have a bright future. “My hope is to raise my siblings,” she says. “And I know I can do it with the help of CRS

and my Catholic faith.”

STM School News

The second and third graders had a wonderful opportunity to attend Orchestra Hall! They heard and saw The Carnival of

the Animals. The students heard sounds of their favorite animals, including the Swan, the Elephant, Kangaroos, Lions, Birds,

and Fish. Writer, Shane Hawley performed his original poetry inspired by the Carnival of Animals. The students also saw a

ballet performance to Swan Lake! Everyone enjoyed the orchestra music! They also learned about this piece of music in

Music class.
