VOCATIONS If you need examples of persons responding to God’s call, look
at Abraham and Sarah – called in old age to leave their country
and have a child. Then Abraham was asked to sacrifice that
child. What faith! Answering God’s call to be a priest, brother,
sister or deacon is also taking a great risk. If you are willing, and
think God is calling to a Church vocation, call Fr. Chris
Lemieux, Vocation Director, Archdiocese of Toronto 416-

LENTEN SCHEDULE
SIGN UP SUNDAY Cardinal Collins and bishops across Ontario are asking for an
email address from every Catholic family in their community,
with a goal of 100,000 email addresses collected by the end of
February 2018. This information will be used locally by Cardinal
Collins and trusted faith partners to communicate periodically
(approximately 6-8 times each year) on issues of particular
importance for the Catholic community.
The first campaign of 2018 is the Call for Conscience, inviting
our elected Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) and those
seeking office this June to increase funding/access to palliative
care, to protect health care workers wishing to abstain from any
involvement in euthanasia/assisted suicide and to protect faith-
based facilities from participation in euthanasia/assisted suicide.
The work builds on a similar campaign in 2017.
Please visit http://bit.ly/SignUpSundayRegistration to register
yourself for this initiative. Thank you for living a faith that acts!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What is the purpose to the Stations of the Cross?
The Stations of the Cross signify within a series of pictures
or tableaux representing certain scenes in the Passion of
Christ, each corresponding to a particular incident or the
special form of devotion connected with such representation.
How and why did the Stations of the Cross come about?
In the Middle-Ages when Catholics were unable to go to the
Holy Land and visit the sites connected with Jesus' life, death
and resurrection because of the Muslim conquest of the
Jerusalem and surrounding areas, Catholics in Europe
decided to have pictorial representations in their parishes. As
there were 14 places of veneration along the Via Delarosa
(the Way of the Cross) honoured by Christians since the first
century, the Church decided to honour those places with the
individual stations in parishes. Tradition asserts in the first
century, after Christ's Ascension into Heaven, Our Lady used
to visit daily the scenes of Jesus' passion in Jerusalem. The
devotion to the Stations of the Cross were fostered and
promoted by the Franciscan priests, who were and are the
guardians of many holy sites in the Holy Land.
If I were to visit Jerusalem today, would I be able to visit
those 14 Stations?
In visiting Jerusalem today, one would visit the
approximation of some of those stations where the Passion of
Jesus occurred. For example, the street level in the old city of
Jerusalem was not at the same level as it was in the time of
Jesus. Furthermore, there are some buildings on the spots of
some of those Stations. One can be sure that one visits the
actual Stations from 10 to 14: 10 - Jesus is stripped of His
garments; 11- Jesus is crucified; 12 - Jesus dies on the Cross;
13 - Jesus' body is taken down from the Cross; and 14- Jesus'
body is laid in the tomb. We are sure that these sites from
Stations 10 to 14 because they are "housed" in the Holy
Sepulchre.
Are these 14 Stations the only ones we have?
The current 14 Stations in most Catholic parishes, are the
traditional ones. For example, scripture does not mention
Veronica, who wiped the face of Jesus. In fact, we do not
know this holy woman's real name. Ver means "true" and
iconic means "image." Furthermore, scripture does not
mention that Jesus fell 3 times. Some of our mystics, like 18th
century Blessed Catherine Emmerich (the one whom Mel
Gibson leaned upon for some scene in The Passion of the
Christ) said that Jesus fell as much as 7 times. Scripture does
not even mention that Jesus met His mother on the road to the
Cross. We know that they met at the Cross. These traditional
Stations remind us that before the New Testament was
written, the Church was already honouring Jesus, His
teachings, and celebrating the sacraments. A few years back,
Pope John Paul II started the scriptural Stations of the Cross.
These scriptural Stations are taken from the pages of the
Gospel. They include, Jesus' trial in front of Pontius Pilate
and Herod; the crowning of thorns, for example. Even though
these scriptural Stations do not include some of the traditional
ones, they number 14 in total.

more information, or to be added to the email list, feel free to
