Second Sunday of Lent February 21, 2016

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?

Jubilee Year of Mercy Pope Francis wants “Twenty-four Hours for the Lord,” around-the-clock availability of the sacrament of reconciliation, implemented worldwide this Friday and Saturday. Celebrated with his oft-recommended “tenderness,” the sacrament is “a source of true interior peace,” says Francis, enabling people “to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus warns us against judging others. Focus instead, Jesus says, on deepen-ing—or restoring—our own relationship with God, for during this Lenten springtime that Master Gardener can use even life’s manure (the parable’s “fertilizer”) to coax fresh fruit from a tree that seems hopelessly barren—us! Parishes preparing catechumens may choose John’s Gospel, which likewise cautions against judging. Imag-ine what the Samaritan woman’s lifelong neighbors thought of her multiple relationships. But by discovering Jesus, then sharing her good news—and Jesus—with those very neighbors, she whom they had probably judged quite sinful became instead their evangelist and “missionary of mercy.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. WE ARE TO BE TRANSFORMED Today’s showing forth of God’s glory is filled with a light that astonishes and reveals. Jesus transfigured on Mount Tabor energizes even the sleepy apostles, who see but cannot get hold of it. They can be for-given for not apprehending the full meaning of this extraordinary vision of a transfigured Jesus with Eli-jah and Moses. The whole of the Law and prophets is summed up here on this mountain. The transfiguration on Mount Tabor is handed over to us this Sunday. As Paul reminds us, it is we who are to be transformed. The light and life of the Resurrection are set forth here so we do not lose heart and fall entirely asleep. This Sunday looks to Easter. It looks to transformation. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The treasures of our tradition can often be traced to one source, but like the waters of a river branching out on its way to the sea, are received dif-ferently as they filter through various cultures and customs. Long ago, mostly because of the prepara-tion of candidates for baptism, the annual feast of the Lord’s death and resurrection was preceded by a period of preparation. In the West that comes to us as Lent, a word drawn from the Old English word for springtime, referring to the lengthening hours of sun-light in this hemisphere. In the East, the tradition of preparing for Easter is received as “Great Lent,” to distinguish it from a secondary “Lent” preceding Christmas, and a two-week period, a kind of “pre-Lent,” that gradually in-troduces the faithful to the austerities of Great Lent. One of the major differences between East and West is in the vigor of the Lenten fast. In Great Lent the customs of fast and abstinence are far more strict than we are accustomed to. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La Cuaresma nos llama a la conversión, a la cual deberíamos estar dedicados toda el año. En muchas parroquias latinas la cuaresma también es tiempo de misiones. De niño recuerdo haber participado cada año en las misiones de mi parroquia. Escuchábamos a los predicadores con curiosidad, ya que aparecían solo una vez al año y luego se regresaban a lugares lejanos y desconocidos. Nunca imagine que algún día yo también estuviera como predicador de misiones. Me gustaría darles un resumen del men-saje que he sembrado en varias parroquias. Las misiones no son para repetir doctrina, sino para evangelizar a los bautizados. Con cinco temas se puede evangelizar a los bautizados recordándoles los cinco puntos claves del Evangelio cristiano: 1) Dios nos ama y nos hizo para él; 2) Nosotros hemos pecado y sufrimos las consecuencias; 3) Dios nos manda a su Hijo para librarnos del mal; 4) Jesús desea formar parte de nuestras vidas personales, ¡invitémoslo! y 5) Jesús llena nuestro corazón con el poder y la presencia de su Espíritu. SEREMOS TRANSFORMADOS La manifestación de la Gloria de Dios en el Evangelio de hoy está llena de una luz que a la vez asombra y revela. Jesús, transfigurado en el Monte Tabor, llena de su energía a los apóstoles ador-mecidos, que ven la visión, pero no la saben captar. Es perdonable que no capten del todo el significado de esta extraordinaria visión de Jesús transfigurado, entre Moisés y Elías. Aquí, en el monte santo, se resumen la Ley y los profetas. Hoy esa transfiguración se nos ofrece y se nos entrega. Como nos recuerda san Pablo, somos no-sotros los que vamos a ser transformados. Hoy se nos presentan la luz y la vida de la Resurrección, para que no nos descorazonemos, no sea que nos quedemos del todo dormidos. Este domingo ya mira hacia la Pascua. Señor Jesucristo, tú nos has enseñado a ser misericordiosos como el Padre del cielo, y nos has dicho que quien te ve, lo ve también a Él. Muéstranos tu rostro y obtendremos la salvación. Tu mirada llena de amor liberó a Zaqueo y a Mateo de la esclavitud del dinero; a la adúltera y a la Magdalena del buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura; hizo llorar a Pedro luego de la traición, y aseguró el Paraíso al ladrón arrepentido. Haz que cada uno de nosotros escuche como propia la palabra que dijiste a la samaritana: ¡Si conocieras el don de Dios! Tú eres el rostro visible del Padre invisible, del Dios que manifiesta su omnipotencia sobre todo con el perdón y la misericordia: haz que, en el mundo, la Iglesia sea el rostro visible de Ti, su Señor, resucitado y glorioso. Tú has querido que también tus ministros fueran revestidos de debilidad para que sientan sincera compasión por los que se encuentran en la ignorancia o en el error: haz que quien se acerque a uno de ellos se sienta esperado, amado y perdonado por Dios. Manda tu Espíritu y conságranos a todos con su unción para que el Jubileo de la Misericordia sea un año de gracia del Señor y tu Iglesia pueda, con renovado entusiasmo, llevar la Buena Nueva a los pobres proclamar la libertad a los prisioneros y oprimidos y restituir la vista a los ciegos. Te lo pedimos por intercesión de María, Madre de la Misericordia, a ti que vives y reinas con el Padre y el Espíritu Santo por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking hap-piness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
