Grandmaster Sun Ki Chong began operating full time professional martial arts schools in 1985 when he opened the first of two “Sun Chong Tae Kwon Do Centers” in Syracuse, NY. Those schools were later transferred to one of his Black Belt instructors. From 1989 though 1995, Grandmaster Chong served as Head Coach for the U.S. National Tae Kwon Do team for five international events, including the 1995 Pan-Am Games in Argentina.

In 1992, Grandmaster Chong hired Michael Mertens, his senior student and top competitor as a full time Director of Operations, with the goal of establishing new schools in the Buffalo, N.Y. area. The first of these schools titled “Master Chong’s Tae Kwon Do Center” was opened in Williamsville, N.Y., and within a few years was the largest martial arts school in Western New York. The school was later expanded to accommodate the ever growing number of students. Four other Western New York locations were opened in the cities of West Seneca in 1995 (later moved to Orchard Park), Amherst in 1997, Lancaster in 2003, and Hamburg in 2010. The name and logo of Master Chong’s World Class Tae Kwon Do Centers was trademarked in 1997 and adopted as the official name for the schools.

In 2005 the Williamsville school was moved to a custom built 10,000 sq. foot facility in East Amherst. This was closely followed two years later by the building of an 11,000 sq foot, two-level facility in Lancaster, complete with administrative offices and a conference room for internal meetings and external seminars.

In addition to headquarters operations in Western New York, World Class Tae Kwon Do is proud to have trained numerous staff members to go on to open their own schools. There are sixteen additional World Class dojangs in several different states. This is a great testament to the success of the World Class system.

We are continually striving to bring the best in martial arts instruction to the entire country.

The Meaning of this Mission Statement:When we state that our goal is to teach the highest quality martial arts, it refers not only to high standards of technical skills, but to the character development and leadership skills that are an essential element of truly learning the martial arts. Tae Kwon Do has a rich history of tradition and valuable philosophies that students should understand and benefit from.

Therefore, our training includes skills applicable in daily life such as cooperation, respect, self-control, focus, and self-confidence. These positive character traits that are developed from Tae Kwon Do training will help students at work, school, home, and on the playing field.

Contributing to our community is a natural extension of improving each student’s life. Students who are more successful and confident lead happier lives and grow closer to their families, which creates more cohesive communities.

Overall, our mission statement is based on the concept of the “ripple effect”. When a single stone is thrown into water it creates ever increasing ripples moving outward. Similarly, we believe that helping an individual student to improve themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally has an impact greater than just to them individually. As a result, each World Class Tae Kwon Do school and its instructors help to make the world a better place!

OUR GOALS1. To teach the highest quality martial arts

2. To empower our students with valuable skills for daily life

3. To contribute to a safe and peaceful community

We can make a difference!

Why do Children come to our schools?

What makes children interested in Tae Kwon Do? It’s simple, it looks like fun! Whether they first became aware of the martial arts from a demonstration or from TV and the movies, almost every child finds martial arts techniques exciting. Tae Kwon Do’s dynamic kicks, powerful forms, and eye catching board breaking are fascinating to children of all ages. When they see Tae Kwon Do performed they want to copy it. Kicking, punching, and shouting are all similar to the active forms of play that most children enjoy. For kids of all ages, Tae Kwon Do looks like fun -- and it is!

Why do Parents bring their Children to our Schools?

Overcoming Shyness: Some parents are concerned that their child is too shy and they want them to “break out of their shell”. They desire to see their son or daughter be more willing to try new things, meet new friends, and stand up for themselves. When a shy child first comes to our center, they may cling to their parent, not respond verbally to your questions, or be hesitant at first to wear a uniform or participate in a lesson.

Learn To Focus: Some children are rambunctious, hyperactive, or challenged with ADD. Their parents will want help teaching their child to control and channel their excess energy. They will also want their child to learn to block out distractions, stay on task, and become a better listener. This type of child will likely be very energetic and have trouble concentrating.

Improve Physical Health: Some children need help in physical areas such as balance, coordination, or flexibility. Such children may have already tried other sports and may have given up due to lack of ability or interest. Other children may be overweight or have physical challenges that limit their capabilities. In all of these cases, the parents are looking for the whole body training and step-by-step instruction provided by our schools, to give their child a healthier and happier future.

What benefits does Tae Kwon Do Offer Children and How are they Achieved?

Focus and Concentration: The structure and format of Tae Kwon Do classes are highly effective at developing a longer attention span and the ability to block out distractions. You should always encourage students to maintain eye contact, listen carefully to your directions, and be aware of their partner when they are training. All of these habits are highly beneficial traits that will improve learning in both the dojang and the academic classroom. Self Confidence: When you praise and encourage students you help them to develop a positive belief in their abilities. You also raise their self esteem. When children have confidence in themselves they are more willing to try new things and to meet new people. This will help them to make friends more easily. Tae Kwon Do helps to teach kids to carry themselves with confidence and pride.Physical Fitness: Tae Kwon Do is an excellent form of exercise for young people because it makes use of the entire body so thoroughly. Practicing with both arms and both legs is ideal for building balance and coordination. Our warm up exercises and kicking drills develop flexibility. As a result of consistent training most children will become much stronger. If a child participates in other sports, Tae Kwon Do is certain to enhance their performance. Self Discipline and Respect: The rules and regulations that we follow in our dojang are not just ancient traditions, but modern day habits of courtesy and respect. When you direct students to bow sincerely, answer respectfully, and to be quiet while others are practicing, you are encouraging habits that will be appreciated by parents, coaches, and teachers. Remember, the best form of respect is to give one’s best effort to the task at hand. Always educate students of the importance of being a “good partner” and they will develop courteous and respectful manners that will apply to the rest of their lives.Goal Setting: One of the most valuable lessons gained through Tae Kwon Do is the power of goal setting. With your support and encouragement, children will learn that through patience and hard work, they can learn almost any skill. Your ultimate goal is to teach your students that working hard is not only the key to success but the key to having the most fun as well. If you help students to develop a habit of giving their best effort in everything that they do, you will have given them the tools to achieve a variety of goals throughout their life.

No two students are exactly alike. No two students learn exactly alike.Be sure to treat everyone as a special and unique individual.

Why Do Adults come to Our Schools? Our members include hundreds of adults ranging in ages from their twenties all the way to their seventies and eighties. Some are already dedicated athletes, while others are looking to get in shape or lose weight. They come from a variety of occupations and family commitments. They may have had a lifelong interest in martial arts or they may have been motivated by the idea of joining their child in classes. Yet, regardless of their reasons, when they gather together in the dojang, everyone experiences a special atmosphere that helps them to achieve their personal best.Tae Kwon Do students progress at their own pace but they train together as a team. The camaraderie that adults feel with their classmates is a source of motivation and enjoyment. Be sure that you encourage adult students to meet and cheer each other on. This will create a welcoming and supportive environment for students of all levels.

Meeting the Needs of Adult Students

Physical FitnessWith today’s modern medicine and information, adults are living longer, more active lives than ever before. Most adults are concerned about how they look and feel. But not everyone has been able to find a successful method for staying healthy. Many adults may have given up on using exercise equipment at home or belonging to a gym. They are still committed to improving their health but also know that they need help in order to become successful.Tae Kwon Do is a perfect fit since it includes all of the major components of physical fitness (strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and coordination) in one workout. The key to gaining results from any exercise program though, are intensity and consistency. As an instructor, you play a major role with both of those elements. Learning how to safely push your students to work physically hard is an important skill. Equally important, is that you must coach your students to think long term and provide them with guidance, motivation, and encouragement that keeps them coming back to the dojang class after class and year after year.

Learning Self DefenseFor both men and women feeling safe and secure leads to peace of mind. Our curriculum improves personal safety through both physical and mental preparation.Tae Kwon Do training helps them to become faster and stronger. It also teaches them how to use their body’s “strong points” against an

attacker’s “weak points”. Partner training allow students to develop a practical knowledge of timing, distance, and leverage. In combination, these experiences enable students to feel better prepared and to carry themselves with greater confidence.

Stress ReliefOur fast paced world means that adults are busier than ever before. The demands of balancing work and family can be a constant challenge. News and information comes at us 24 hours a day, making it is very difficult to achieve any quiet time to gather one’s thoughts and relax. Tae Kwon Do provides a much needed opportunity to refresh and recharge. When students enter the dojang, your warm smile and enthusiastic greeting can brighten their day. A high energy Tae Kwon Do class takes their mind off of their current concerns and allows them to focus on their training. A vigorous workout releases adrenalin and endorphins, making them feel energized.

Family ActivityBusy families often have schedules that cause them to run from place to place to attend activities for each different family member. Our unique family class allows the family to attend one training session where they can all practice together side by side. This is a unique experience that creates a very special bond. The atmosphere of respect in the dojang improves the way family members treat one another. Whether it is preparing for a belt testing or a tournament, Tae Kwon Do gives a family shared goals upon which to focus.

NOTE: Respect Your StudentsAdult students graciously adopt the etiquette and formal customs of the martial arts. They humbly submit to wearing the belt of a beginner and responding respectfully to instructors who may be decades younger than themselves. This is a tremendous honor, and one that should be treated with great care. Always act professionally and treat students of all ranks with respect and courtesy at all times.

Being an instructor, you can make an enormous positive impact on hundreds of students.

When treated with the proper care, the teacher-student relationship can have a lifetime of meaning and value.

8 Benefits of Being an Instructor...

1. Improves your performance & understanding of techniquesTeaching others is another form of learning. In order to help students of all different ages and levels to grasp the techniques more easily, you will have to expand your depth of knowledge on every single technique. This is why it is so important that you continue to train regularly. The combination of physical repetition, along with explaining and demonstrating techniques to others, will make you a much more skilled martial artist.

2. Develops leadership skillsTake pride in your martial arts accomplishments and on being selected to be a member of our team. As a teacher you will be challenged daily to bring out your best energy level (even when tired), to maintain composure (even when frustrated), and to set a World Class example at all times.

3. Increases your communication skillsAs an instructor, you will be in front of people day after day, class after class. You will develop experience and strategies for communicating with words, body language and through touch. You will improve your ability to speak with clarity and enthusiasm.

4. Teaches you people skillsAn old saying states “different strokes for different folks.” As a result of teaching you will become more aware of the styles, abilities, and preferences that make each person unique and different. You will learn how to notice these differences and adjust for them. You will learn how to be more comfortable with a variety of people and how to make them more comfortable around you. The ability to create and maintain positive relationships will be valuable in all areas of your life.

5. Be part of a tradition of excellenceOur schools have a history of success and a reputation for high quality. We are known for our excellence in martial arts and professionalism. As a team member, you are the newest generation to carry on the World Class legacy.

6. Gives you a sense of contributionThe skills that you will be teaching are not limited to the martial arts classroom alone. You will help shy children to be more willing to raise their hand in school, teenagers to overcome self-esteem issues, and adult students to feel and look better physically than they ever did before. You will be able to take great pride in the difference you will be making in people’s lives.

7. Specialized TrainingYour staff meetings and staff development days are specifically designed to improve your skills in performing and teaching Tae Kwon Do. In addition, this special training will increase your depth and understanding of Tae Kwon Do theory, philosophy, and teaching concepts.

8. Career opportunityThere is no limit to how far you can go if you develop the right skills and attitude. Many staff have become excellent full time instructors and even masters. A dozen of our former staff are now the proud owners of their own Tae Kwon Do school. How far will you go? The outcome is up to you!
