compound noun: two or more words joined to make one noun
Compound nouns are quite common . You see them everywhere .
ice cream sandbox chitter-chatter
There are three types of compounds: open compounds, closed compounds, and hyphenated compounds . Look at the examples above, and you can easily see the difference .
Open compounds have space between the words forming the compound .
cell phone hot dog walking stick heart attack
Closed compounds have no space between the words forming the compound .
tablecloth oatmeal hilltop chalkboard
Hyphenated compounds have a hyphen between the words forming the compound .
daughter-in-law six-year-old one-third know-it-all
There is not a set rule for which compounds are open or closed or hyphenated . In order to be sure, you must check a dictionary .
Compound Nouns
