La Granja Table 1

The following table provides a summary of important assessment and reporting criteria used at La Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 checklist in The Australasian Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (The JORC Code, 2012 Edition). Criteria in each section apply to all preceding and succeeding sections.

SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA

Criteria Commentary

Sampling

techniques

• Almost all sampling is by diamond drill core drilled from surface since there is very little mineralized outcrop. In addition to drilling an underground tunnel has been developed for bulk metallurgical sampling.

• Within the mineral resources volume – open pit phases 1 to 10, of 108104 m of drilling, 61240, or 56% were by previous owners Cambior (1994-1997), 653 m or 1% were by next owners Billiton (2001), and 46211 m or 43% were by Rio Tinto (2006-present).

• Of these, 36% mostly by Rio Tinto are angled between 40 and 80 degrees from the horizontal to maximize intersection of vertical structures. 63%, mostly by Cambior are vertical (>80 degrees) and 1% are sub-horizontal, mainly pilot holes relating to sampling adit development.

• No down-hole equipment used except deviation surveying.

Drilling

techniques

• Diamond drill wireline core PQ (83.1mm diameter), HQ (63.5mm diameter) & NQ (47.6mm) sizes. Most holes start with HQ, and then change to NQ typically after 300m. Some holes (generally >1500m) continue at depth in BQ (36.4mm) but these are generally below the mineral resources volume and are of low of significance for open pit study and for mineral resources.

• There are also PQ wireline holes drilled twinning HQ/NQ holes, but all this core is used for metallurgical test-work, and only logged information, not assays are used for mineral resources.

• Core is only oriented in certain selected geotechnical holes.

Drill sample

recovery

• Core deeper than 60m achieves on average better than 95% recovery. From 0 to 60m, the average is better than 90%.

• Quality drilling contractor used to ensure good core recovery. • No relationship between recovery and grade detected. • Twin hole studies have not detected bias between sampling campaign generations

Logging • All core except PQ core for metallurgy is photographed and geologically logged, also geotechnically to a level of detail appropriate to open pit mining, with Point Load and UCS testing.

• Logging is of detailed lithology, hypogene & supergene alteration, colour, dominant minerals. Generally, this is qualitative.

• 100% of the database of 234,386m in 469 holes has been logged.

Sub-sampling

techniques and

sample

preparation

• All mineral resources holes are all cored and all sampled. • Half-core samples. Cambior used a core-splitter and 5m sample length, Billiton & RTMP used a

diamond saw and 3 m sample length. • ½-core samples dried, crushed to 70% <2mm, split 250g pulverized to 85% <75 μm, homogenized

and split, 100g used for assay as described below. • Sample preparation technique by ALS Lima assay laboratory is consistent with best industry

standard for Porphyry Copper deposits. • Representivity in terms of accuracy (or lack of Bias) is ensured by use of blanks, matrix-matched

standards, and precision by field duplicate samples, coarse & pulp duplicates. See below. • Copper mineralization is mainly fine-grained pervasively disseminated therefore half core

sampling is appropriate. Sample quality for zinc is marginal, and as a result zinc is not reported as

Page 2: SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA - Rio Tinto · Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 ... sampling to investigate the

mineral resources.

Quality of assay

data and

laboratory tests

• Total assaying (i.e. all drilled core sampled & assayed) • ICP initially, then if >1% Cu, AA used for better precision for Cu, As, Zn, Pb also Ag if >100ppm. • QA/QC on assaying by ALS from 2006 until January 2013, used in the current model, BM9.1 is

summarized, with Insertion Rate (IR) as a percentage of the 68,606 samples in 315 batches: 415 Field duplicates since late 2011. IR is 0.6%. Accuracy and precision from field,

coarse and pulp duplicates compares favorably with other Rio Tinto copper operations. 1350 Coarse Duplicates, IR 2.0 %. 1353 Pulp Duplicates, IR 2.0 %. 2505 Coarse Blanks, IR 3.2 %. 1044 Pulp Blanks, IR 1.4 %. 3334 Standard Reference Materials (SRMs), IR 5.0 %. 6 SRMs developed by the La Granja team and certified by Smee Associates used as “Matrix-Matched Standards”, including high-calcium version since copper assays are known to be liable to bias when associated with high calcium levels.

Verification of

sampling and

assaying

• Project pre-owned by Cambior & Billiton who did their own sampling and assaying, that was then verified and repeated by RTMP. 14 twinned holes to investigate possible bias in drilling by previous owners, and early drilling by RTMP

• Of 22,758 Cambior and Billiton samples, 19,797, or 87%, mainly as coarse rejects were re-assayed by Rio Tinto for estimation. No relative bias or precision difference found between original and new values. Remaining 13% could not be re-assayed due to loss or damage, so their original values were used for estimation. Assays from Empresa Minera Del Peru S.A., 1979 – 1982, were not used since no material available for re-assay, but they were consistent with later data.

• Extensive procedures document has been created • All data transfer is electronic, eliminating transcription errors. Data storage is in acQuire system

which has been customized for RTMP application. • Data input and storage managed by Data Manager and checked by Mineral Resources Estimation

Superintendent before use for estimation. • There is no adjustment of Total Copper (CuT) assays or other elemental assays (including SO3, CO3

etc.) Cyanide-Soluble Copper (CuCy) assays are determined from incremental assays of acid-soluble plus cyanide-soluble of the residue, and may be adjusted down to CuT if greater. CuCy not assayed if CuT<0.1%, so this CuCy value is determined from this CuT value by multiplying but CuCy/CuT of nearest fully-assayed sample.

Location of data

points

• Most recent (RTMP) holes surveyed by Total station (91%), or by GPS (6%). Approximately 2 % used planned coordinates.

• There was adjustment to locations of 69% of Cambior & Billiton hole collars that had originally been located by screen pointer or digitizer in MapInfo software to acquire the coordinates. Some of these were found to be in undisturbed ground. RTMP has adjusted collar locations to probable positions in drill pads. This is an aspect of risk, though the proportion of accurately located RTMP data is considered to overwhelm any imprecision caused by this issue. .

• Grid system is WGS84 • Present topographic control is of professional quality and adequate.

Data spacing

and distribution

• No exploration results reported. • Most mineral resources are within a 200 m to 100 m randomly arranged spacing, which with

reference to variograms, is sufficient to establish continuity appropriate for inferred mineral resources.

Orientation of

data in relation

to geological

• Copper variography, overall is close to isotropic, probably because there are both sub-horizontal and sub-vertical mineralization structures.

• Sub-horizontal supergene shallow structures are well sampled by vertical holes. • Deeper sub-vertical structures are sampled by angled holes, perhaps less well but adequate for

Page 3: SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA - Rio Tinto · Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 ... sampling to investigate the

structure the present OoM stage of investigation and mining sequence. Greater consideration of the orientation of mineralization structures will be appropriate as the OoM Large Case volume is upgraded from Inferred to Indicated.

• No bias considered to be introduced. There is some clustering of data due to constraints on drilling, but the use of Kriging is considered to remove this bias.

Sample

security

• These are low-value samples (i.e. not gold or diamonds). • There is no opportunity for contamination of core from drill to local core-shed and sample

cutting. • Samples sealed in bags at site, and transported in company vehicle direct to assay lab.

Audits or

reviews

• A review of data quality was carried out by Dr Scott Long of AMEC in January 2008. All recommendations implemented.

• A project Review by AMC in was completed in November 2013. Recommendations are under review

SECTION 2 REPORTING OF EXPLORATION RESULTS

Criteria Commentary

Mineral tenement and land tenure status

• The 3900 hectare La Granja Mining Property which encloses all of the present Mineral Resources, is held by RTMP as registered in the Book of Mining Rights of the Real Estate Registry administered by SUNARP, and pursuant to a Transfer Agreement entered into in 2006 with the Peruvian Government. Tenure is subject to annual fees which are paid, and to completion and delivery of a Feasibility Study on or before December 2016. Surrounding tenements including that which are required for mine infrastructure or on-going exploration are also held by RTMP or RTX, some of which require payment of additional penalties due to inactivity. A plan of tenements held is appended

• Since license to operate a mine is dependent on acquisition of land surface rights and the goodwill of the local and national community, RTMP has a substantial program of work to achieve this.

• Archaeology is a possible impediment. A schedule is in place for closure of archaeology sites. • Joint ventures, partnerships, overriding royalties, native title interests, wilderness or national

park and environmental settings are in good standing for the current project development stage.

Exploration done by other parties

• The La Granja copper anomaly was identified in 1970. • Empresa Minera Del Peru S.A. drilled 5814m in 25 holes from 1979 to 1982, but since no sample

material is available from this work it is not used for present Mineral Resources estimation. • Cambior Inc. drilled 99619m in 249 holes during 1994 to 1997 followed by Billiton who drilled

1944m in 9 holes in 2001. • These have all been re-logged and re-assayed and are accepted for present estimation. • They focused on higher-grade shallower portions of the Cerro Paja Blanca (CPB) Porphyry, and did

not identify the Mirador Porphyry.

Geology • La Granja is a Porphyry Copper deposit in the Andean Cordillera of Miocene age. It consists of two adjacent clusters of dacite porphyry intrusions – The CPB porphyry and the Mirador - with associated breccias, alteration, skarn formation and disseminated copper and iron sulphide mineralization, with minor arsenic, zinc, silver and lead emplaced into a sedimentary sequence of volcanics, limestones, siltstones and sandstones.

Drill hole • A summary tabulation of all holes with collar coordinates, length and interception details (>0.3 cu

Page 4: SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA - Rio Tinto · Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 ... sampling to investigate the

Information cutoff) is given in the appendix of this document.

Data aggregation methods

• Exploration results have not been reported separately prior to this Mineral Resource release

Relationship between mineralisation widths and intercept lengths

• Exploration results have not been reported separately as widths or interception lengths; therefore this paragraph is not applicable.

Diagrams • See appended plans of location, tenure, & sections of geology and resource model.

Balanced reporting

• Exploration results have not been reported separately; therefore this paragraph is not applicable.

Other substantive exploration data

• Pre-Rio Tinto project owners used stream sampling to identify the anomaly, and then soil sampling to investigate the CPB Porphyry, but apparently no geophysics and they did not identify the Mirador.

• Drilling results are compatible with geochemical and geophysical surveys. Soil and stream sampling show a copper anomaly with a zinc anomaly halo – typical of porphyry coppers. The geophysics method Magneto-Tellurics gives an excellent response that was key to identifying the Mirador Porphyry and to its continuing investigation to the north-west and at depth.

Further work • Exploration for further extensions is in progress. However, the deposit that could be mined by open pit is considered to be virtually fully identified and requires only infill drilling to the appropriate level of detail and economic studies for Mineral Resources reporting. It is open, but probably only at depths that would not affect an open pit study.

SECTION 3 ESTIMATION AND REPORTING OF MINERAL RESOURCES

Criteria Commentary

Database integrity

• All logging data are qualitative, i.e. data codes that have been checked repeatedly, checked to be registered or within-range values and reconsidered during modeling.

• All assay data are transferred electronically from lab into acQuire database. All data are checked against valid ranges and analyzed by QAQC procedures.

Site visits • Site visited several time this year and since 2006 by two CPs to walk over the site and review & improve data acquisition procedures.

Geological interpretation

• Interpretation consists of 4 zone models, based on corresponding logging - lithology, alteration, copper domains (supergene & hypogene), and others such as anhydrite front.

• Sedimentary and intrusive chronology is interpreted and consistent with known sedimentary and intrusive cycles in the area and similar deposits worldwide. This is used to control modeling.

• Interpretation has been subject to internal peer reviews. There are no alternative interpretations. • Geology zone models used extensively in estimation of 17 grades + density. A geology cross section

is appended • Factors affecting continuity of grade and geology are country-rock sediments & volcanics, intrusive

lithologies, hypogene alteration & mineralization, & supergene re-mobilization. • It is known that there are mineralization structures of different orientations. The present

representation is adequate for PFS and OoM in the volumes that they represent, but needs

Page 5: SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA - Rio Tinto · Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 ... sampling to investigate the

refinement as the OoM volume is upgraded towards PFS.

Dimensions • Deposit occupies an area of 3Km x 3Km. • Within that, the Mirador Porphyry is about 1Km x 1Km to the ENE of, and connected by a skarn and

supergene ‘bridge’ to the CPB Porphyry, which is more spread out at 2Km x 2Km but at lower grade and with more diffuse boundaries.

• Highest mineralization to base of model is 2Km, but known to continue deeper, especially in the Mirador.

• The Mirador intrusion appears to be later than that of the CPB.

Estimation and modelling techniques

• Domain interpretation is based on geology & population statistics of grades. Populations are linked to zones or combinations of zones in the geological models, with reference to the origin and behaviors of the minerals of the grades. These zones or combinations are then used to define domain models when needed for estimation.

• Nearest neighbor (NN), Inverse Power of Distance (IPD) & Ordinary Kriging (OK) estimation of 17 grades is standard. Local Uniform Conditioning (LUC) applied to calculate recoverable Resources given open pit mining assumptions. Isatis used for geostatistics & LUC; Vulcan used for most modeling & estimation.

• Estimated variables are CuT, CuCy, Zn, Mo, Ag, Al, As, Ca, CO3, Mg, K, Fe, S, SO4 (and Sulphide Sulphur (SS) by subtraction), Pb, Au.

• Estimation Parameters for copper are listed at the end of the Appendix of this document, including search distances and variogram parameters.

• Simplified criterion for top-cutting is that top 1% of data should contain 10% or more of metal. Top 1% of copper composites in domain 11 (most significant) contain about 5% of copper and so do not need top-cutting.

• Each model checked against previous, but no previous production records hence no reconciliation. • No by-product recovery is assumed. • Of 17 grades estimated, 14 potentially deleterious in some way (including ARD) given two planned

processes of leach & flotation. • Drill spacing is typically 200m – 50m. Block size is 20m x 20m x 15m, needed for definition of

leached-sulphides contact & other domains. OK model is over smoothed when wide drill spacing, but this is compensated for by use of LUC, where selective mining unit considered to be 1 standard block.

• No assumption of correlation between variables – not needed. • Estimate validation uses visual inspection & swath plots, comparison between different estimation

techniques, comparison with raw data and previous models.

Moisture • All tonnages estimated and assays determined on a dry basis, drying at 69 degrees centigrade for 8 hours.

Cut-off parameters

• Mining will use a variable cut-off, currently expected to be between 0.1 and 0.2% copper. Cut-off for mineral Resources is cautious at 0.3% copper, not varying since historic Billiton estimate.

Mining factors or assumptions

• Open Pit for top part of deposit including all Mineral Resources. • All Indicated Mineral Resources are within the mine plan for the Starter Case, and all Inferred

Mineral Resources are either in the Large Case, or a much lesser quantity in the Starter Case. • Selective Mining Unit probably close to 20m x 20m x 15m, as current block size. • Effects of dilution generally expected to be very low because boundaries are diffuse and domains

are at a large scale. • However, there is a major exception. At the base of leached/top of sulphides, there is a sharp

contact, but often with low levels of copper mineralization - oxides and relict sulphides - in the leached zone, which will have to be taken as ore, causing dilution. A definitive dilution strategy at this contact is not yet in place.

• Open pit planning sufficient to support a likely development case for the current Mineral

Page 6: SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA - Rio Tinto · Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 ... sampling to investigate the

Resources estimate has been completed. • A cross section through the potential open pit area is appended as figure 4

Metallurgical factors or assumptions

• Processing method for the Starter Case will be exclusively Dump Leaching. Dump leaching binds Arsenic as insoluble oxide in the leach dumps.

• Processing method for the Large Case includes: o A 44 Mt per annum Mill and Concentrator (M&C) will take high-copper grade at a Cut-off

Grade (CoG) of around 0.35% copper with low-arsenic, and at times high-carbonate ore. o Ore of lower-copper grade at a CoG of around 0.25% copper or high-arsenic, with low-

carbonate will be processed by a Crush and Agglomerate (C&A) Dump Leach operation of about 60 Mt per annum.

o Material of still lower-copper grade at a CoG of around 0.15% copper, provided it has low-carbonate will be processed by a Run-of-Mine (ROM) Dump Leach operation of about 60 Mt per annum.

Environmental factors or assumptions

• Rigorous environmental investigation has been done to PFS (starter pit) and OoM (large case) study level supporting the Mineral Resources estimate.

• In the Starter Case, all waste & leach dumps are within the Paltic valley and those of tributaries In the Large Case, by means of a tunnel to the Pacific side of the watershed, dumping will move to that side, including tailings for which provisional sites have been located, and tenements secured.

Bulk density • Detailed tests and support a Dry Bulk Density model that is controlled by depth, (natural) leaching status, lithology and grade of iron.

• Due to friable, fractured rock mass & hydrated or swelling phyllosilicates, uncertainty in Bulk density was identified as a significant potential risk for Mineral Resources. This has been addressed by rationalization of the drying procedures in a purpose-built laboratory at site

• Porosity is accounted for in determination method. There are vugs not accounted for, but considered to be well below 1% of rock mass, therefore bias due to them < 1%.

• It is assumed that dry core density is a reasonable estimator of in-situ dry bulk density. • Bulk density is considered to be slightly under-estimated, because of elastic rebound and hydration

of core increasing volume as it is drilled and handled. Therefore the outcome is positive – i.e. more metal. So the current estimate is considered to be conservative.

Classification • Inferred confidence requires samples in 5 of 8 octants within 300m in domains where continuity is demonstrated, based on early variogram study where range exceeds 300m. The octant searching largely eliminates extrapolated estimates.

• Inferred is also reported within a conceptual mine plan with an adequate business case, and a CoG of 0.3% copper is used.

• Indicated requires Inferred criteria to be passed, plus equivalent drill spacing based on the nearest 3 holes of:

o 92.5m for 15Mt.p.a. Starter Case, o 126m for 44 Mt.p.a. M&C o 139m for the 60 Mt.p.a. C&A and ROM leach scenarios. o These based on Conditional Simulation study, giving ± 10% accuracy / precision on

estimated copper grade in annual production volume at a 90% level of confidence, described below.

• These results have been reviewed by a second Competent Person. • The reported mineral resource for La Granja as on 31/12/2013 is tabulated below

Page 7: SECTION 1 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND DATA - Rio Tinto · Granja for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves in accordance with the Table 1 ... sampling to investigate the

Audits or reviews

• Resource reviews include o Data Quality Review, AMEC, 2008 o Resource Audit 2010 ( RT internal) o T&I Review of Resource estimation practice December 2011 o Brief Review by ORSC, December 2011 – January 2012

There are no outstanding issues arising from these reviews.

• A project Review by AMC in was completed in November 2013. Recommendations are under review at the time of publication

Discussion of relative accuracy/ confidence

• The JORC Code requires that in Inferred Resources, geological and grade continuity are implied but not verified. For La Granja the measures of continuity are obtained globally within an interpreted domain with the implication that they can be applied locally, where that domain has been interpreted.

• The criteria imply continuity and therefore a certain level of estimation confidence from being within variogram range, and use an octant search to virtually eliminate extrapolation.

• Nearly all material above 0.3% copper within the Starter and Large Cases qualifies as Inferred Mineral Resources. Material within the starter pit option is predominantly indicated.

• For Indicated Mineral Resources, the criteria adopted for La Granja, are based on work by Dr Harry Parker of AMEC who proposed that “Indicated Resources should be known with a relative accuracy of ± 15 % at 90 % confidence for annual production increments”. “Known” is considered to be in terms of contained metal, so for La Granja, the interval is reduced to ± 10 % at 90 % confidence applied to copper grade, because there is some minor uncertainty in density, considered to be within ± 5 %.

• This was applied by means of a Conditional Simulation (CS) study conducted in 2012, centered on Copper Domain 11, which contains almost all of the mineral resources. The study used copper grade data to develop a relationship between confidence or variance, represented by Coefficient of Variation (CV), drill spacing and volume for blocks in this domain. Inputting required CV and volumes corresponding to annual production increments produced equivalent drill spacings based on the nearest 3 holes listed above under ‘Classification’.

• Using these spacings, about 70% of the Starter Case or 100 Mt qualifies as Indicated, as listed in the table above. About 36% of the Large Case qualifies as Indicated in this way, but since this is only at OoM Study level, the figures are considered to be provisional and are not reported as Indicated but included in the Inferred mineral resources.

• One area still under review is a more detailed understanding of the mineralization structures. In domain 11 enrichment and depletion structures are:

o Sub-horizontal or sub-parallel to the topography due to supergene processes, or o Sub-vertical structures due to fractures, intrusions and brecciated zones through which

hydrothermal fluids travelled up from depth, or o Related to sedimentary bedding, both due to planes of weakness and beds that provided

favorable conditions for replacement mineralization such as the Mantos, and with degrees of disruption through skarn to breccia.

• These structures occur in combination, and in the past, attempts to split up Domain 11 into hypogene, mixed and supergene have did not meet with systematic improvement.

• However, improved information levels seem likely to allow refinement of the model to obtain
