Subject or Object of a Preposition?8

A prepositional phrase may separate the subject and the verb of a sentence . When looking for the subject of a sentence, be careful not to choose the object of a prepo-sition . It is helpful to put prepositional phrases in parentheses before looking for the verb and subject .

All of the boys are sitting in the third row.

What is the subject? Who or what “are sitting”?

It may seem that boys is the subject: boys are sitting . Go back and put parentheses around the prepositional phrases .

All (of the boys) are sitting (in the third row).

Now you can easily see that boys is the object of a preposition . The subject is All (All are sitting) .

Forming the habit of putting parentheses around prepositional phrases will help you identifiy prepositional phrases automatically .
