predicate adjective (a′ jik tiv): an adjective that follows a linking verb and de-scribes the subject

You have already worked with nouns or pronouns that follow linking verbs and rename the subject . They are called predicate nominatives .

An adjective may follow a linking verb and modify the subject . This is called a predicate adjective.

Kayla is happy in the sandbox. Winter days are short.

A sentence can have compound predicate adjectives .

The twins were tired and grumpy.

Predicate adjectives are diagrammed just like predicate nominatives .
