2 2008 UCLA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

SEASON OUTLOOK

One of the hallmarks of the UCLA men’s volleyball program is its unwavering optimism. Players graduate, lineups change, inexperience pervades, youth dominates. Head Coach Al

Scates, entering his 46th season, sees only the opportunities of renewed development and increased options. He sees the excitement of new players when experience leaves; he welcomes challenges at positions that once seemed secure and he smiles when senior leaders emerge on young teams.

Such is the case with the 2008 edition of the Bruins, who lost more than 900 points to graduation, and could feature a lineup of mostly sophomores and freshmen. In UCLA’s development-focused program, new players always step up. Scates welcomes the return of four regular starters and two players who each started half the matches at setter. Only at UCLA would a returning starter be battling for playing time, while an incoming freshman at the same position has locked down the job. Only at UCLA could fans believe the Bruins could win a national championship rotating two pairs of players at two positions.

Scates also returns fi ve other lettermen, three of which have started at least once, and all of which have the ability to contribute.

Following are capsule summaries on the Bruins’ 2008 person-nel:

SETTERS

Th e Bruins boast two setters with plenty of experience, each with his own strengths. Junior Matt Wade has played 59 matches over two seasons and sophomore Kevin Ker started 17 of the 28 matches he played last season.

“Th ey split the setting duties last season,” said Scates. “Th ey’ve both improved from last season. [At this point] I’m not sure who’s go-ing to get the most playing time this year. Th ey will both play a lot.”

Wade, at 6-5, has a four-inch height advantage over his counterpart and is a strong blocker. In a fi ve-game victory against UC Irvine on Apr. 6, he came off the bench to score 4.5 points on nine block assists.

Ker has the ability to score more points, recording 25 aces last season for an average of 0.3 per game. As a starter for the fi nal 16 matches, he piloted the Bruins’ off ense to a hitting percentage of .336 and a 12-4 record. He also scored 1.2 ppg, served 18 aces and averaged 12.3 assists per game.

“It’s going to come down to who is setting the best at the time,” said the head coach. “Th ey’ve both worked with all the hitters and they know all the options.”

“We’ve won national championships with two setters be-fore, most recently in 2006 with Wade and Dennis Gonzalez,” Scates recalled.

Th ird-year sophomore Cooper O’Connor is the Bruins’ third setter. He recorded nine assists in the alumni match on Nov. 27. Scates says he’s confi dent in O’Connor’s ability to back up Wade or Ker.

OPPOSITES

All-American Steve Klosterman, the Bruins’ all-time rally-scoring leader in points, has graduated, and replacing him won’t be easy. Still, Scates has the luxury of using one of two players who have varsity experience as starters at this position.

In the Fall, Scates trained true freshman Weston Dunlap at the position before moving redshirt sophomore Brett Perrine, last year’s starting quick hitter, to opposite.

When it became apparent that Perrine would be the starter at opposite, Dunlap was moved to Perrine’s blocking spot.

“Right now, Brett would get the starting nod [at opposite],” explained Scates. “He also has a tremendous vertical jump, he’s athletic and he hits the ball hard. He also has an explosive jump serve.”

As a quick hitter last season, Perrine hit .315 and blocked a ball a game. He recorded 18 aces and scored 248 points in 27 matches. Moving him to opposite better utilizes his athleticism and allows Dunlap, who is 6-7, a chance to start at his high school position.

Junior Sean O’Malley, a two-year letterman at opposite, is battling Perrine for more playing time. Last season a wrist injury limited his playing time to eight matches, although he established a career high of 15.5 points in a starting role against Hawai’i. Th e previ-ous season, he started seven of the 23 matches in which he played.

“Sean is blocking better and hitting well,” said Scates. “Th is position is just like the setting position: whoever is hot will play the most.”

“We’ve alternated opposites on a couple of NCAA cham-pionship teams,” he recalled. “In 2000, we used [Evan] Th atcher and [Ed] Ratledge. Going back before that, we used Dan Landry and Mike Diehl in 1993.”

OUTSIDE HITTERS

Th e Bruins return one starter at this position and must replace another top scorer, Paul George. Again, Scates has some experienced options as well as some emerging players.Sophomore Kevin Ker

2008 UCLA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL 3

SEASON OUTLOOK

Sophomore Garrett Muagututia started 28 matches as a freshman, averaged nearly three kills per game, and scored 358.5 points. He recorded 12 double-digit kill matches and a pair of double-digit dig performances. An outstanding passer, he recorded a 97.4% reception rate with 17 errorless passing matches.

“Garrett does everything well,” commented Scates. “Th is year he’s lighter, he’s jumping higher and he’s hitting the ball very hard. He’s also digging many more balls than last year. He’s even more explosive out of the back row. And, he hasn’t even reached his potential; he’s just going to get better.”

Sophomore Dylan Bowermaster appears to be the frontrunner to replace George at the open outside hitter’s spot. Last season he played in 17 matches and 27 games, scoring a career-high of nine points against Ball State. He also recorded a career-high of seven kills in a starting role against Cal Baptist.

“Bowermaster has the edge over [two players],” said Scates, noting that the 6-6 Mater Dei HS graduate has a slight edge in experi-ence.

Junior Ryan Ratelle and redshirt sophomore Jeff Woodley also are competing for playing time at this spot. As a freshman in 2006, Ratelle played in eight matches, recording a career-high of four kills and 4.5 points against Hawai’i. In two seasons, he has a perfect passing percentage.

Woodley played in one match last season and recorded his only kill. Against the Alumni he recorded four kills and an ace for fi ve points, and passed all seven of his chances successfully.

QUICK HITTERS

Freshman Weston Dunlap assumed the starting role vacated by Perrine when the latter moved to opposite. Th e 6-7 Dunlap earned six varsity letters at Newport Harbor HS, where he led the Sailors in kills and blocks as a senior and earned All-CIF honors twice. Dunlap also helped the Balboa Bay Club to a pair of bronze medals at the Junior Olympics.

“Dunlap will start at one of the quick hitter positions,” said Scates. “As soon as we moved him [to the middle], he became our best hitter there.”

According to Scates, Dunlap’s quickness, blocking instincts and his ability to run precise routes were the primary reasons that earned him the starting job.

At the other quick hitter spot, a pair of redshirt juniors will battle for playing time. Returning starter Jamie Diefenbach is trying to hold off a vastly improved D.J. Stromath. Diefenbach, who recorded a couple of key blocks in the 2006 NCAA championship match, returns after starting all 29 of the matches in which he played last season. He led the Bruins in blocking with a 1.2 bpg average, a mark that ranks third on the single season rally-scoring chart. He also ranked seventh on the fi nal MPSF blocking chart.

“One thing Diefenbach has developed is a better serve,” said Scates. “We will score a lot of points when he’s serving.”

Stromath, although he has played in just seven matches in his career, has vastly improved his blocking, according to Scates.

“D.J. has become one of the team’s best blockers,” said Scates. “He doesn’t have much playing experience, but he’s off to a fast start. His blocking technique is the best on the team.”

In addition, 6-8 redshirt sophomore Shaun Nichols played in 18 matches last season. In his fi rst career start, he scored a career-high of 16 points against USC on Mar. 31 with 13 kills and six total blocks.

LIBERO

Senior Tony Ker has established himself as one of the nation’s best Liberos, having earned Defensive Player of the Year honors twice

and consensus First-Team All-America honors last season. He also is poised to become the Bruins’ career digs leader and one of the program’s all-time great passers.

Last season, Ker recorded 18 errorless passing matches, raising his career total to 48. He passed better than 97% of his chances, covering a lot of court. In the digs department, he recorded 10 double-digit dig matches, raising his career total to 41.

“Tony is one of the best, if not the best, defensive players in the country,” said Scates. “No player in the country passes more court as eff ectively than Tony. And he keeps getting better.

A solid student, Ker has been a member of the Director’s Honor Roll six times, including all three quarters last season, and is a candidate for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Th e Bruins also will be developing freshman Tom Hastings, a graduate of Esperanza HS, who earned fi rst-team All-CIF, all-confer-ence and all-county honors. As team captain, he helped lead the Aztecs to the Orange County championship.

“He’s playing behind a fi rst-team All-American, so we hope to redshirt him,” said Scates. “He’s an outstanding Libero. He’s unfl ap-pable out there — relaxed. He passes our best servers and doesn’t get rattled.”

AL SCATES(UCLA ’61) • HEAD COACH • 46TH SEASON

THE COACHING STAFF

Each season the UCLA volleyball team points toward one goal: winning the NCAA championship. First place is the

only acceptable fi nish. Al Scates has coached UCLA to 19 NCAA titles, while all other collegiate men’s volleyball programs have won 17 championships combined. Scates’ 19th title, won against Penn State in 2006, continued one of the greatest careers in collegiate coaching.

Wrote the late Jim Murray, a Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the Los Angeles Times, “Al Scates?! Precisely. Th e one and only. Th e man who is to volleyball what (John) Wooden was to basketball, (Red) Sanders was to football, Napolean to artillery…”

“California boasts some of the world’s best

sporting mentors, among them UCLA volleyball coach Al Scates . . .,” wrote Sally B. Donnelly in Time Magazine.

Scates’ program produces unparalleled suc-cess because of three elements: 1) outstanding student-athletes; 2) an excellent coaching staff and 3) a winning tradition.

Al Scates and UCLA volleyball won NCAA championships in 1970-71-72-74-75-76-79-81-82-83-84-87-89-93-95-96-98-2000-06. He is the only coach to have guided his team to three successive titles three times, including four straight from 1981-84. Scates was named Coach of the Year in 1984, ’87, ’93, ’96, ’98 and 2006.

Scates’ 45-year coaching record of 1,154-223 (.838) is one of the best in collegiate sports. Th at record ranks fi rst among all collegiate volleyball coaches in all divisions. In addition to their 19 NCAA titles, the Bruins also won USVBA col-legiate championships in 1965 and ’67 under Scates’ stewardship. During his fi ve decades at UCLA, he has coached 52 diff erent fi rst-team NCAA and 26 USVBA All-Americans, 44 U.S. National Team members, 27 Olympians and seven diff erent Players of the Year.

Last season, the Bruins recorded their 45th consecutive winning season, a national leader. Junior Tony Ker became the 52nd fi rst-team All-American in the Scates Era and Steve Klosterman became the Bruins’ all-time leader in kills and points during the rally-scoring era.

Two years ago, Scates guided the Bru-ins to their most excit-ing NCAA title, taking a team that was 12-12 through mid-season and leading it on a 14-match march through the last third of the league season, the MPSF playoff s and the NCAA Tournament. No player earned AVCA 1st Team All-America or 1st Team All-MPSF honors, and yet, when the dust settled at the end of the season, the Bruins were NCAA champions once again. Th eir fi nal 26-12 mark set a record for most losses by a champion and they became the fi rst seventh-seeded team in league history to win the conference tourna-ment.

At the NCAA Championship, Steve

Klosterman earned Most Outstanding Player hon-ors and seniors Damien Scott and Dennis Gonzalez were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Scates was named the 2006 Coach of the Year by Spike/Volleyball magazine.

In 2005, Scates guided the Bruins to a record of 26-6 and an appearance in the NCAA Finals for the 24th time, a collegiate record. Quick hitter Paul Johnson became UCLA’s 51st First-Team All-American and freshman Tony Ker earned second-team honors. Th e Bruins fi nished second in conference play with a record of 18-4 and both Ker and Johnson were First-Team All-MPSF selec-tions. On March 8, 2005 Scates won his 1,100th match — a 3-0 victory in Pauley Pavilion against Penn State.

coach to the USA Volleyball Men’s All-Era Team for the period between 1978-2002, joining former Bruin players Doug Partie and Karch Kiraly.

On October 3, 2003 Scates was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, the fi rst active coach in UCLA history to be enshrined.

In 2003, he co-authored his fourth book, “Th e Complete Guide to Volleyball Conditioning,” with former UCLA Strength Coach, Mike Linn.

In 2002, the Bruins rose to No.1 in the rankings before untimely injuries to key starters at playoff time ended their season. Still, three starters earned post-season honors, and three other players earned all-conference acclaim. Sophomore Adam Shrader was named ASICS/Volleyball Libero of the Year and senior Matt Komer earned second-team AVCA All-America honors. Freshman Jonathan Acosta earned distinction in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd.

In 2001, seniors Mark Williams and Adam Naeve earned fi rst-team AVCA All-America honors and led the Bruins to the NCAA fi nals for the second time in three years. Th e Bruins won their 23rd league title, 11th in the previous 13 years. Scates also was awarded the Distinguished Sports Award by the U.S. Sports Academy.

On Feb. 3, 2001, Scates won his 1,000th career match, a 3-1 triumph at Pepperdine. In addition, the Bruins won their fourth straight Outrigger Hotels Invitational. Finally, Scott Morrow and Adam Naeve earned NCAA All-Tournament honors.

In 2000, senior Brandon Taliaferro motivated the Bruins on the court and Scates prepared them for an exciting run to the national championship. Forced to win the grueling MPSF Championship, the Bruins defeated defending NCAA champion BYU in the fi rst round, beat Loyola Marymount in the semifi nals and ousted Pepperdine in the league championship match to earn the top seed at the NCAAs. Th en, they swept Penn State in the semifi nals and Ohio State in the fi nals to capture title No. 18. Taliaferro earned Player of the Year honors from Volleyball Magazine, senior Matt Davis earned Libero of the Year honors and Williams, Seth Burnham, Evan Th atcher and Morrow earned either All-America, NCAA All-Tournament or All-MPSF honors.

In 1999, fi ve of six starters received all-league accolades and juniors Taliaferro and Naeve repeated as AVCA First-Team All-Americans.

In 1998, Scates’ masterful expertise brought the Bruins to the NCAA fi nals for the sixth straight season. After outlasting Lewis University in the NCAA semifi nals, the Bruins’ championship experience enabled them to sweep Pepperdine for their 17th title. Scates also earned a unique trifecta of coaching accolades: he was voted AVCA, USA Volleyball and U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of

the Year. Finally, he was elected to the California Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame.

In 1997, Scates guided a team that had lost the co-player of the year and its primary passer to the NCAA title match for the fi fth consecutive year. Th e Bruins, who rallied from an 0-2 defi cit in the fi nal, came within two swings of stealing their third straight title. Scates coached the Bruins to their fi fth consecutive MPSF Mountain Divi-sion crown and was named 1997 MPSF Coach of the Year.

On February 19, 1997, the Bruins defeated USC on the road, capturing Scates’ 900th career victory.

In 1996, Scates took a team that lost four starters from the previous season’s national cham-pionship squad and guided it to a fourth straight division title and league championship, fi nally culminating in UCLA’s 16th NCAA title and 21st national championship in men’s volleyball.

In 1995, Scates guided the Bruins to their 15th NCAA title, a 31-1 record and a third straight conference divisional title. Th e Bruins fi nished the season with 19 straight victories, and were ranked No.1 nationally in the coaches poll for 34 consecutive weeks dating to 1993. From 1993-95, the Bruins amassed streaks of 42 consecutive conference victories, 34 straight home wins and 28 straight road triumphs. In May of 1995, he was selected as one of the inaugural recipients of USA Volleyball’s All-Time Great Volleyball Coaches Award.

Scates became the fi rst active coach to be inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in cer-emonies at Holyoke, MA, in October of 1993.

Under Scates, UCLA holds 27 NCAA men’s volleyball team and individual records, including consecutive victories (48), consecutive home court victories (83), consecutive NCAA tournament victories (15) and most undefeated seasons (3). No other program boasts an undefeated season.

In 1984, Scates saw three of his former players, Karch Kiraly, Dave Saunders and Steve Salmons, lead the U.S. Olympic volleyball team to the gold medal. In addition, former UCLA All-Americans Doug Partie and Ricci Luyties joined Kiraly and Saunders on the 1988 Olympic Team, which successfully defended its Olympic title.

Under the leadership of Kiraly, Partie and Salmons, the U.S. Team completed its only Triple Crown, adding a 1986 World Championship title to its 1985 World Cup crown and ’84 Olympic gold medal. Kiraly left no doubt that he was the world’s best volleyball player, earning World Cup and USA Cup Most Valuable Player honors.

At the 1992 Olympics, Partie returned to the USA Team and led it to a bronze medal. Fred Sturm

(UCLA ’76) served as head coach.

At the 1996 At-lanta Games, Kiraly made history by becoming the only male volleyball player ever to win three Olympic gold medals. Kiraly and partner, Kent Steff es, won the inaugural Olympic Beach Vol-leyball competition at Atlanta Beach.

Indoors at Atlanta, Scates served as a con-sultant to the U.S. team, watching former All-Americans Jeff Nygaard and Dan Landry as well as coaches Fred Sturm and Rudy Suwara.

On the AVP Tour, former Bruins Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos were the beach circuit’s premier team in the 1980s. Smith won 139 profes-sional beach tournaments. Kiraly has dominated the beach circuit by winning a record 148 open beach tournaments. He also has earned more than $3 million in his professional beach career.

Scates played on six USA championship teams and was named All-American several times.

During his fi rst year coaching at UCLA, Scates founded the Southern California Volleyball Assn. and served as its commissioner from 1963-72. Th e SCVA is now known as the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation.

He chaired the NCAA Volleyball Committee for two years and was also chairman of the USVBA Collegiate Volleyball Committee. From 2005-07, he served a three-year term on the AVCA Board of Directors as the men’s collegiate representative.

Th e UCLA alumnus earned a BS in Physical Education in 1961 and completed his Master’s in P.E. from UCLA in 1962.

Th e former UCLA All-American has trav-eled the world as both a player and coach, and is recognized as one of the United States’ foremost volleyball authorities. In the summer of 1997, he guided a contingent of current and former collegiate players at the World University Games in Sicily.

In 1999 Scates served as the Head Coach of the USA Team that competed in the World University Games in Mallorca, Spain.

Scates and his wife, Sue, live in Encino. Sue is a Broker Associate for Coldwell Banker in Encino. Th ey have three children, daughters Tracy (UCLA ’86) and Leslie (Northern Arizona ‘04), and a son, David (CS Northridge ‘93), and three grandchildren born to Leslie. Tracy and her husband live in San Rafael. Tracy is a freelance trainer, facilitator and coach; helping organizations with strategic change and leadership development.
