The Fort CampbellLady Falcons picked upwhat was unquestion-ably their biggest win ofthe season last week at
Caldwell County.Fort Campbell (3-17)
defeated Caldwell (14-11) 52-48 Thursdaynight in Princeton.
The score was 17-14Caldwell County afterone quarter, but Fort
Campbell would use a17-8 run in the secondquarter to take a leadthat FCHS would neverrelinquish.
It was the Lady Fal-cons’ first win againstan opponent with a win-
ning record this seasonand a ray of hope head-ing into the final weekbefore the District 8Tournament.
Junior Alli Tellez hasled Fort Campbell inscoring all season andput up 30 points Thurs-day night. Angie Rangelscored 11 in the winningeffort.
Cassie Yates led Cald-well County with 24points.
The Lady Falcons willhost Trigg Cuonty onFriday at 7:30 p.m. inthe regular season’sfinal game.
On the boys’ side, theFort Campbell basket-ball Falcons (5-17) headinto the final week ofthe season on a seven-game losing streak.
FCHS lost to two 2ndRegion opponents lastweek, falling 88-62 toHopkins Co. Centraland 70-41 to Madis-onville-North Hopkins.
It was a game of runsagainst HCCHS, as FortCampbell jumped out toa 5-0 lead a minute intothe contest, only to seethe Storm charge backwith an 18-0 run.
The Falcons answeredwith their own 16-2 runlater in the first half totie the contest at 23-23.Marcus Tucker finishedthe spurt off with a stealand lay-up.
Hopkins Co. Centralhead coach Toby Milescalled a timeout, and histeam responded with a21-6 run of their own toput the contest away forthe final time.
Central wouldoutscore Fort Campbell40-29 in the second half.

Fort Campbell visitsRussellville on Thurs-day at 7:30 p.m. andgoes to Dawson Springson Friday at 6 p.m. inthe season’s final weekbefore the District 8Tournament next week.
Like just about any-thing else, there areplenty of good reasonswhy it’s good toseed for theDistrict 8 bas-ketball tourna-ments andplenty of goodreasons not to.
It’s alwaysbeen under-standable forFort Campbellto want to drawfor its opponentin the past, andit’s understandable thathead boys’ basketballcoach John Cunning-ham voted Friday toseed.
Since the KentuckyHigh School AthleticsAssociation doesn’t clas-sify basketball, smallerschools have alwaysbeen looking for ways toeven the playing field asmuch as possible, andthe blind draw for thepost-season has been atraditional way to dojust that.
Hopkinsville andChristian County are 5Aschools in football and
Fort Campbell is barely3A, not to mention thatUniversity Heights
Academy haswon more All“A” Classic statechampionshipsthan most canremember andwon the SweetSixteen in 1992.
District 8 isunquestionablyone of thetoughest dis-tricts in Ken-tucky, and Fort
Campbell has found lit-tle success in boys’ orgirls’ basketball over theyears, mostly due to fac-tors out of its control.
Drawing opponentsafforded the Falcons theopportunity to perhapsplay the third-best teamin the district instead ofthe second or first. FortCampbell defeated Uni-versity Heights Acad-emy on Feb. 24, 2009, inthe first round of thedistrict tournament in ayear the two teams dreweach other.
The Falcons lost toChristian County in the
finals, but nearly pulledthe upset of all upsetsagainst HendersonCounty, but fell 43-34.
In the last two seasonswhen the district wasseeded, the Falcons fell96-27 to ChristianCounty in 2011 and 89-52 to the Colonels in2010. Two losses don’tmake seeding a badthing, however.
High school sports area teaching mechanismmuch in the same waythat a classroom is. Astudent or student-ath-lete shouldn’t depend onwaiting around forsomething good or un-foreseen to happen.
You wouldn’t want astudent to not study fora test and hope theteacher later decides tograde on a curve. No,you want that youngman or lady to preparethe entire semester, study and to be readyfor test day so he or shecan feel the sense of ac-complishment that thegrade was earned.
One has to believe thisis at least partly why all
four schools voted toseed the tournamentnext year: to make theregular season meansomething. It wasn’t toincrease ticket sales, be-cause the schools werealready playing eachother.
There are still factorsthat place the schoolson an uneven playingfield, and we can debatewhether basketballshould be classified an-other day.
The day will comewhen Fort Campbell willbuild a basketball pro-gram that’s competitiveand won’t be a fourthseed. The Falcons willwin a district tourna-ment game again some-day, and the victory willbe that much sweeter.
The scoreboard does-n’t grade on a curve, itdoesn’t measure luckand it doesn’t care whatname is on the front ofyour jersey.
The Falcons will winagain someday, andthey will know theyearned it.
