This summer join the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the History and Geography departments at Salem State University for a unique study and travel institute on the theme of World War II and the Holocaust in Central Europe. The institute includes a two-day seminar followed by 12 days of group travel to explore historical and geographical sites, museums, and culture in the following locations:
• Berlin (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Book-Burning Memorial, Topography of Terror Exhibit, Brandenburg Gate, site of the former Fuhrer Bunker, Schoenberg District. Optional visits to Wannsee House, Jewish Museum, Museum of German History)
• Dresden (Walking tour through central city, Dresden City Museum. Optional site visits to Albertinum, Zwinger, Opera House and other state museums)
• Theresienstadt (Guided tour of the former Theresienstadt concentration camp)
• Prague (Walking tour of city including Wenceslas Square, Charles Bridge, Old Jewish Quarter and Cemetery and view of the Prague Castle. Visit to National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror.)
• Brno (Walking tour of the Czech Republic’s second largest city)
• Budapest (Walking tour of city including Chain Bridge, views of Danube from Buda, Shoes on the Danube Bank Memorial. Group visits to Dohany Street Synagogue and Holocaust Memorial Center.
The trip is structured around course themes, but there will be ample free time in most cities to explore museums, exhibits, restaurants and German, Czech and Hungarian culture on your own. Travelers taking the course without credit are very welcome and included in all the institute travel experiences, tours and site visits.
Course InformationNote: The trip is a required component of the institute and must be taken to receive credit or PDPs for this institute. Students must complete two days of seminar-style institute classes before departure. These sessions will review the academic requirements and due dates for institute portfolio and the travel aspects of the seminar. Dates of the institute classes are July 5-6. The travel portion of the institute is from July 7-19.
Trip Information and PaymentsCost: $2939 (double occupancy)*Single supplement: $698There is a two-step registration/payment process for the travel portion :1. $500 deposit use non-credit course ID # 3456
(spring 2017)2. $2495 balance payment use non-credit course
