1. SECTION MEETINGHello Section Members! I am Mariana Ludmer, thrilled to write as the new Section Chair, and I want to invite you to a tour of California Steel Industries! Come join us for a delicious dinner prepared by CSI’s new state of the art cafe and network with industry peers. And how about you enter for a chance to win a FREE SEAT to DECEMBER’S AWS CWI SEMINAR IN LOS ANGELES????? Yes, you heard it right! We’re raffling off a seat to the seminar, which takes place at the Westin Hotel near LAX from Dec 3rd to Dec 9th. You will attend as our Section Rep., receive a $100 check, get breakfast and lunch included plus a complete set of AWS books and a welding inspection tool kit. This is valued at $1,325 altogether. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity!!!! You may be the lucky winner! And of course, we’ll also have our usual 50/50 cash (consolation) prize. So put your hard hat on and join us on November 3rd for this section meeting! CSI’s plant sits on 450 acres, with approximately 115 acres under roof. It includes an 86" Hot Strip Rolling mill, hot rolled strip finishing facilities (build-up, shear, and slitter lines), a 62" Continuous Pickling line, a 5-Stand Cold Reduction mill, two hot-dip Galvanizing lines, cold rolling equipment of Annealing and Tempering mills, and an Electric Resistance Welded Pipe mill.

Dear AWS Section members,
I want to introduce you to your new Section Chair, Mariana Ludmer, CWI, CWE. Mariana has been volunteering with our section since 2007 . She has held several board positions throughout the years and has been instrumental in the growth of our section. She’s very involved with AWS, beyond our section, and is very passionate about welding. She’s been instrumental in keeping the section alive, volunteering restless hours to put meetings together, informative newsletters, gather industry sponsors, seek donations for our section, run the scholarship program and recruit volunteers to help with those processes. In the meantime, she was attending college in Riverside, CA, then moved to Berkeley to go to university and yet continued to volunteer for the Section the same amount of time. She never stopped dedicating her time to you - AWS members - simply because she is passionate about what she does and she fully supports AWS’ mission, vision and knows that she can help improve many people’s lives, encouraging and empowering people to pursue careers in welding.
I have no doubt that Mariana will be a great Section leader and keep our membership engaged, informed and entertained. I will remain on the section’s board as we are in dire need for volunteers and for my passion to what I do and don’t want to stop. I will continue as Certification Chairman, among other positions, and will contribute to AWS’s Mission by volunteering in AWS Technical Committees and helping Section Members find answers to technical matters as our Section’s Technical Representative (I recently earned my bragging rights by passing the SCWI exam in July of this year, with a high score, on my very first try).
I highly encourage you to do the same. The meetings, the newsletters, the scholarships, the raffles… everything that you participate in and see and gain from this Section is thanks to volunteers like Tony Gonzales, George Moore, Gene Lawson, Mariana Ludmer and myself. Don’t forget that AWS is a non-profit organization run by its membership. Like the saying goes “ you make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.”
Please join me in welcoming Mariana to her new position!
