All around the world people live different lives. Their traditions and customs are different, than the next person. To help the students gain a better understanding about various people and their cultures, we are going to take a trip around the world.

The students will visit each of the seven continents. They will learn the tradition of the people, the animals, facts about the continent, and where they are located on a map. The students will learn this information through class activities, videos, literature, research, and computer software.

1. Asia

The students will learn that Asia is the largest continent. They will also discover the people, animals, and learn many of the different countries of Asia.

2. Africa

The students will learn about the Samburu and Masai culture. The students will also learn some of the Samburu language and create mask.

3. North America

The students will learn that North America is divided up into three large countries. The students will research the different countries and share what

they discovered with the class through a poster board.

4. South America

The students will learn that South America is made up of thirteen countries. The student will learn about the Amazon and discover the mysterious creatures that live on the land.

5. Antarctica

The students will discover that Antarctica has no people living on the land except scientist. They will learn about the freezing weather and the animals that live on the land.

6. Europe

The students will learn that Europe has 46 countries, but they will focus on England, France, and Italy. The students will research the countries and discover the people and the language they speak.

7. Australia

The students will learn about the “Land Down Under.” The students will research the Native people of Australia the Aborigines. The students will

learn learn culture and traditions.

8. Evaluation

The students will be evaluated on what they learned about the seven continents through a comprehensive test. The students will also be evaluated throughout the unit by participation and completion of assignments.

Day 1: AsiaIntroduction: The teacher will introduce the students to a map of the world. The teacher will explain that there are seven continents and each continent has its own customs, culture, and traditions. The teacher will explain that they are going to do a unit over the seven continents. Each day they will discover a new continent and complete various projects.

Outcome: The students will learn Asia is the largest continent and it has 48 countries. The students will choose a country in Asia and research the people, animals, weather, and language.

Development: The teacher will provide books, internet, computer software, and videos. The students will work with a partner and research a country they choose. Each group will research a different country. The students will share their information with the class.

Day 2: AfricaIntroduction: The teacher will show the students where Africa is located on a map. The teacher will show a video of the Samburu and Masai people.

Outcome: The students will learn the traditions of each tribe. They will be able to tell the difference between each tribe and know which customs belongs to what tribe.

Development: After the video the teacher will show the students examples of English words that are translated to Swahili (an African language). The students will practice Swahili with a partner. The teacher will also show examples of masks of African culture. The masks tell stories. The students will create their own mask and tell the story behind their mask.

Day 3: North AmericaIntroduction: The teacher will show the students where North America is located on a map. The teacher will explain that North America is divided up in to three large countries: Canada, United States, and Central America and Caribbean Islands.

Outcome: The students will learn where each of the countries in North America are located. They will also learn the people, traditions, and animals of the countries.

Development: The students will be divided up into three large groups. Each group will be responsible for researching their country. The teacher will encourage the groups to assign information for certain group members to get, so everyone is not gathering the same information. As a group the students will share what they found by creating a poster board of information and pictures.

Day 4: South AmericaIntroduction: The teacher will introduce the South America by locating it on the map. The teacher will explain that there are thirteen countries in South America. The teacher will explain that they are going to concentrate on the Amazon. The Amazon is made up of more than two and a half million square miles. The Amazon gets more than nine feet of rain each year. The Amazon is the home of many exotic animals.

Outcome: The students will discover what animals live in the Amazon. They will also be able to locate the Amazon on a map of South America.

Development: The teacher will allow the students to choose one of the animals found in the Amazon. The students will find information on their animal by locating books in the library, finding information on the internet, and from the encyclopedia.

The Amazon spreads across much of South

America. Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

and Venezuela all have Amazonian regions.

Day 5: AntarcticaIntroduction: The teacher will show where Antarctica is located on a map. The teacher then will ask the students if they think anyone lives on the continent. The students will share their opinions then the teacher will share that no one lives on the continent except scientist. The continent is too cold for humans to live on it.

Outcome: The students will know why no one is able to live on Antarctica. The students will also learn what animals live on the continent and what research scientist conduct.

Development: The students will explore a website . The website called Glacier it will explain to the students what scientist do in Antarctica, the animals, the weather, and the seasons. http://www.glacier.rice.edu/

Day 6: EuropeIntroduction: The teacher will show the students where the continent of Europe is located. The teacher will explain that Europe has 46 countries, but we are only going to talk about England, France, and Italy. The teacher will show a video over each of the countries. The students will pay close attention to the people and the language they speak. The students will also know famous landmarks in each country.

Outcome: The students will be able to locate the three countries in Europe. The students will also be able to know what language the people speak and characteristics of the people.

Development: The students will take notes during the videos and will also look through books to gather information about the countries. Each student will research each country and create a power point presentation over the information they gathered. Translator The students will also be able to visit the translator website to see how English translates to Italian and French.

Day 7: AustraliaIntroduction: The teacher will point to Australia on the map. The teacher will share with the students that Australia is known as the “Land Down Under” because it is located in the Southern Hemisphere. The teacher will show a picture of Aborigines, the Native people of Australia. The teacher will also play a clip of the Didgeridoo, an instrument the Aborigines play.

Outcome: The students will learn where Australia is located and why it is called the “Land Down Under.” The students will learn about the culture of the Aborigines.

Development: The students will view a website about aborigines. The website will help the students understand where they came from, their traditions, family, art, and land.

The Aboriginal flag is divided horizontally into two equal halves of black (top) and red (bottom), with a yellow circle in the centre. The black symbolizes Aboriginal people and the yellow represents the sun, the constant renewed of life. Red depicts the earth and also represents ochre, which is used by Aboriginal People in ceremonies. Click on the picture to hear the

Didgeridoo.

This book takes a closer look at Africa. It discusses homes, female/male dress, religion, medicine, weapons, and so on. Eyewitness books offer actual photographs of items that would be related to Africa.

This book is part of the A True Book series. This book along with the others in the category offers a simply version of text for the younger students. The text is larger and there are fewer words on each page. There are illustrations to go along with the text.

actual pictures, kids can play the Thumb Piano, make a mast, and listen to Swahili folktale.

GamesThis site would be great to have on the computers for the students to test

their knowledge. The site offers different games that test the children about the continents.

National GeographicThis site has not only information but also has interactive games. The

students can choose from a variety of games to play and they will learn at the same time.
