The work of the Singapore Sports Institute, Sports School and NYSI complements the important role played by our National Sports Associations and sports clubs in developing interest and grooming competitive athletes in their respective sports.

There is a need for a steady supply of manpower with the right skill sets and competencies to address the needs of the sports industry - ranging from Sports Programming, Sports Branding and Marketing, Coaching to Sports science and research:

– Sports Administrator/Coach/Trainer/instructor

– Sports Trainers

– Athletes

– Sports Biomechanist

– Manager, Sports Hub Integrated Facilities Management

– Assistant Director, Development Projects

– Medical Director

– Sports Psychologist

– Nutritionist

– Physical Education Teacher

This month, we will focus on a few of these jobs.

Athletes• Participate in training camps• Train rigorously • During the playing season, they

follow strict rules and practice routines under the direction of trainers and coaches.

• Stay in top physical condition to play their best and to minimize the chance of injury.

* For the young aspiring athletes, there are available pathways through the Singapore Sports Institute, Singapore Sports School and National Youth Sports Institute.

Entry Requirements for Athletes

• Physically fit

• Ability to work well in a team

• Required to participate in open trials

Sports Biomechanist• The study of an athlete’s

technique relative to an ideal model or performance target.

• Professionals use mathematical modelling and computer simulation to assess performance.

• Biomechanical analysis allows us to construct sensible training targets by addressing the underlying hindrances to attaining athletic goals.

Entry Requirements for Sports Biomechanist

• Postgraduate Degree (PhD preferred) in Sports Science/Engineering, or related degree, specializing in Biomechanics and Motor Control.

• Good background knowledge and understanding of other sports science disciplines such as physiology, nutrition, psychology, and strength & conditioning.

Physical Education Teachers

Imparting life skills through sports and games

Entry Requirements for Physical Education Teachers

• Bachelor of Science (Education)

• A degree plus the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (Teaching of Physical Education)

• Physical education teachers at the primary schools will need at least a diploma in physical education.

Coaches Nurture aspiring athletes, and help them realise their

fullest potential• They coach men and women athletes the

fundamentals and rules of competitive sports.

• They set up exercise programs to help athletes get in top physical condition.

• They supervise drills and practice sessions that are specially designed for the athletes they coach.

• They create playing strategies and give players directions during competition.

• They are experts in the sports they coach.

• They must know how to teach and, most importantly, how to motivate athletes to perform well.

Entry Requirements forCoaches

• Nitec in fitness training or a diploma or degree in sports.

• Understand the sports they coach so they can teach them to others.

• National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) offered through the Singapore Sports Institute is also an option to help coaches upgrade their skills.
