The Devil Wears Prada was a best-selling phenomenon when it was pub-lished in 2003 and proved quite thecharm for author Lauren Weisberger.
The author’s debut novel about animperious Anna Wintour-like magazineeditor led to a successful film adapta-tion in 2006 starring Anne Hathawayand Meryl Streep. Elton John is nowworking on a Broadway musical version.
But the third installment in the se-ries, When Life Gives You Lululemons(Simon & Schuster, 340 pp., eeEE),is, like its main character, more con-trived than charming.
The Devil’s Emily Charlton (EmilyBlunt in the movie) is front and center inLululemons. (Let’s give Weisbergerprops for a clever title, at least.)
Having gone to Hollywood and be-come a top stylist, Emily is the go-toimage consultant for celebrities. Untilrecently, that is. Her clients have beendropping her and signing with a newwunderkind, Olivia Belle, whose acu-men in social media is far superior toEmily’s.
The new novel opens with Emily be-
ing called to New York on New Year’sEve to handle a situation with a client —only to be unceremoniously dumped by
said client, who then hires — guess who— Olivia Belle.
While on the East Coast, Emily de-cides to drop in on childhood friendMiriam Kagan, who has left her job as alawyer in New York City and moved toGreenwich, Conn., to be a full-timemom.
It is through Miriam that Emily be-comes aware of Karolina Hartwell. Aformer supermodel and current wife of aU.S. senator from New York, HarryHartwell, Karolina is arrested for DUI.Her predicament goes from bad toworse when her husband very publiclyleaves her. Karolina flees Bethesda,
Md., to hole up in the family home inGreenwich.
Through Karolina and her friendshipwith Miriam, Emily finds an avenue for her own redemption as an imageconsultant and the perfect project to gether back on top.
Of the three protagonists, Emily isprobably the most underdeveloped andunsympathetic. Which is too bad.
Weisberger could have given hermore of a soul, more dimension. In-stead, the reader is treated to a relent-less barrage of vapid observations thatsoon wear thin.
Even Greenwich, the other majorcharacter in the book, does not fare well. The town is filled with stereotypicalathleisure-wearing moms whose con-versations border on the sophomoric.
Both The Devil’s Andrea Sachs andMiranda Priestly make brief appear-ances. Andrea is pretty much super-fluous; she is now living on a farm inVermont. Miranda’s moment is criticalto a major plot line yet manages to feelglossed over.
Prada fans hoping for an entertain-ing reunion with their favorite charac-ters may find that life has given themLululemons after all.
