Any new changes?

HB5?

STAAR?

TAKS?

Testing HB5

HB5-Assessments in Algebra II, geometry, English III, chemistry, physics, world geography, and world history have been eliminated from the testing requirements. As a result, the July 2013 STAAR administration will not include assessments for these courses. End-of-course assessments will continue to be offered in Algebra I, English I, English II, biology, and U.S. history

Page 23: Security/Testing Patrick Tesson, Jr

Testing HB5 Students who have taken a required assessment –

but have not yet passed – will still need to demonstrate satisfactory performance on that exam to meet the state’s graduation requirements. High school students who have to date passed English I or English II reading but not English I or English II writing (or vice versa) will still need to successfully complete the second test to meet graduation requirements. Existing state law does not allow the commissioner to waive a testing requirement. High school students who have not successfully completed a separate reading or writing assessment by that time will take the new combined English I or English II test.

Page 24: Security/Testing Patrick Tesson, Jr

Testing HB5

1. Beginning in Spring 2014, the English I and II exams will measure reading and writing through a single assessment and students will get one score

2. For students who took the separate reading and writing exams prior to this date, they have to pass at least one of the two tests and get a combined score of 3750 across the two tests.  If they do not meet this requirement by next spring, they will have to take and pass the new combined test.

Page 25: Security/Testing Patrick Tesson, Jr

Testing HB5

3. The Phase 1 standard that was supposed to be raised this year, will be maintained for the 2013-2014 testing cycle.

4. The performance standard needed to meet the testing requirement for graduation will be based on the performance standard in place when students take their first EOC test and will apply to all 5 required for graduation. (This was not the case before now.  This simplifies the requirements greatly.)

Testing TAKS

Any and all students whom enrolled in high school at or before the 2010 academic school year are eligible to participate in TAKS testing, if the student has not passed any or all TAKS exams and needs to pass as a graduation requirement, then the student will take the TAKS test.
