Scholarships, Awards&

Explanation of termsAwards may be offered to candidates who display excellence in any of the following fields:

• Academic• Art • Design & Technology • Music• Drama• Sport• All-Rounder

Awards are offered for entry at Years 9, 10 and Sixth Form, however awards may be offered at other times under special circumstances.

Candidates may enter for more than one of these Awards. Candidates who consider their strength to be their breadth of talent may apply for an All-Rounder Award.

ScholarshipsScholarships are the highest awards, granted at the Headmaster’s discretion to those displaying excellence in the Scholarship assessments, and may be up to the value of half of the fees.

In exceptional circumstances a ‘major Scholarship’ may be awarded, which will be ‘index-linked’. Other major Scholarships, such as the Wavell-Wakefield, may also be granted at the Headmaster’s discretion.

Scholarships are not awarded to candidates applying for Sport. See the section on Awards below.

Exhibitions Exhibitions may be awarded to candidates who are close to Scholarship level.

AwardsCandidates applying for a Sports Award, those displaying excellence in the assessments, and may receive up to the value of half of the fees.

BursariesAll Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards for entry to Sedbergh School at 13 years and above can be supplemented by a Bursary Award, based upon the financial circumstances of the candidate’s parents. Bursaries are not part of the scholarship process but can be applied for by contacting the Bursar’s office.

Scholarships, Exhibitions, Awards and Bursaries at Sedbergh School

Introduction Sedbergh School has a number of different awards that are available for talented individuals in a number of fields. This leaflet provides some basic information that describes the various types of awards, the specific requirements and information about the assessment process.

The application forms for the awards should be enclosed with this leaflet, however please contact the school office if you require additional copies.

Academic ScholarshipsAvailable for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12

Year 9 and 10 entryThe Award of an Academic Scholarship is based, in most cases, upon the candidate’s performance in the Common Academic Scholarship papers set by The Independent Schools Examination Board, from whom past papers may be obtained; there is a charge payable in advance, to sit this Examination. In exceptional circumstances, candidates may be assessed by their performance in other papers, as specified by the School. Scholarship assessments are also open to those currently in the School who satisfy the age qualification.

Year 9 and 10 AssessmentUnless taking the School’s own papers, each candidate will be required to sit the following papers:

English

Mathematics

Science

French

Geography

History

Religious Studies

Optional papers in Latin, Greek and German can be set by the School upon request.

Year 12 entry (Sixth Form)Scholarship examinations will comprise three one hour papers one of which will be a General Paper, the others being in subjects of the candidate’s choice.

Specimen papers are available on request.

For those currently at the school, Scholarships may be awarded on the basis of GCSE results.

All-RounderAvailable for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12 Life in a full boarding community provides opportunities for a multitude of talents to flourish besides the traditional attributes of academic excellence, musical, artistic and sporting skills. For this reason Sedbergh offers All-Rounder Scholarships to those who show potential as leaders and whose all-round attributes will ensure that they make a major contribution to the life of the School.

The Wavell-Wakefield Scholarship may be awarded on occasions when a candidate demonstrates exceptional leadership potential.

The ExaminationEach candidate will be required to undertake:

a) an Academic paper

b) a series of interviews

c) assessment in two or more skills from Art, Design & Technology, Drama, Music or Sport.

Scholarships are available to those candidates combining academic strength with potential in two of Art, Design & Technology, Drama, Music or Sport and Leadership potential.

Those opting for Drama as part of the All-Rounder Award will need to prepare a short piece of their choice of 2-3 minutes duration.

Parents are advised that candidates would be expected to be close to individual Scholarship potential in all of the disciplines offered; it is strongly recommended, therefore, that parents read the sections pertinent to individual disciplines.

Music Scholarships Available for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12 Scholarships and Exhibitions are awarded to those displaying musical excellence. Music Scholars are usually offered one period of free tuition per week in two instruments. Music Exhibitioners are usually offered one period of free tuition per week in one instrument.

The standard of performance expected is Grade V) of the Associated Board for younger candidates, although a higher standard is expected for those candidates at Sixth Form entry level. However, evidence of talent and promise of development is of more importance than actual examinations passed.

• Original composition may be offered and should be submitted in advance.

• Candidates may offer a second instrument of a lesser standard.

• Singing may be offered and candidates should prepare and sing one song; they will also be asked to sing at sight.

• Non-specialist singers are encouraged to offer singing and should bring one song.

The practical examination will last approximately 45 minutes and will comprise:

a) the performance of two contrasting pieces on each instrument, or the voice for specialist singers

b) sight reading tests

c) aural tests, to include sight-singing

d) interview

Art ScholarshipsAvailable for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12 Art Scholarships are awarded for outstanding performance in the visual arts.

Candidates will be required to produce a piece of work on the day of interview which may be from any one of the fine art disciplines.

Candidates should bring a portfolio of artwork, which may include paintings and drawings, done from observation and imagination. Other work, such as prints, photographs, ceramics and sculpture, will be very welcome. A candidate may be a specialist in any area of fine art. Candidates’ portfolios will be discussed at interview with the Director of Art.

Design & TechnologyAvailable for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12 Design & Technology Scholarships for entry at Years 9, 10 and 12 are awarded for outstanding performance in the field of Resistant Materials and Systems and Control.

For years 9 and 10 there is a written paper and interview based upon:

a) theory of materials/processes

b) graphic work

For year 12 the assessment will be based on interview.

All candidates should bring a portfolio of work to include evidence of research, drawing ability and photographs of objects that they have designed and made. Candidates’ portfolios will be discussed at interview at which they will be expected to demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of the design process

DramaAvailable for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12 Drama Scholarships for entry at year 9 and 10 are awarded to candidate’s who demonstrate outstanding creative thinking and can present an innovative and emotive performance.

a) Candidates will need to prepare a short piece of their choice of no more than 3 minutes duration to perform to an audience

b) They can also expect to be asked questions about their experiences of theatre, productions they have been involved in, characters they have enjoyed performing and to justify their choice for audition.

Drama Scholarships for entry at Year 12 are awarded for outstanding dramatic performance and to candidates who demonstrate the ability to communicate innovative ideas and enthusiasm for this subject.

There is a written paper and interview based upon:

a) Theory and subject knowledge

b) Play text analysis

c) Evaluation of a live performance seen by the candidate

Candidates should bring a portfolio of work to include any relevant qualifications gained e.g. LAMDA examinations and evidence of their involvement within productions to indicate their depth and range of experience within the Dramatic Arts. Candidates’ portfolios will be discussed at interview.Sport Awards

Available for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12 These may be gained by those displaying exceptional talent and potential in one or more sporting disciplines.

Applicants will be expected to furnish evidence of achievement to date and supporting documentary testimonials from teachers or coaches at School and Club levels.

The candidate will be required to present themselves for a practical assessment of ability in at least one of the major team sports of Cricket, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Rugby. If they wish, candidates may offer more than one Sport, but on the application form should indicate clearly the rank order in which they wish to be assessed. It is usual that only two Sports are assessed.

There will be a written test and interviews.

Age RestrictionsCandidates for entry into Year 9 should be over 12.6 and under 14.0 years of age on 1st June in the academic year of the Examination.

Further information will be sent to you with regard to the assessment process, at least two weeks in advance.

Dates for assessmentsThe assessment process usually takes place from the end of January until March in the year preceding September entry.

In normal circumstances the entry lists will close at the beginning of the Lent Term. However if you have received this information after this date please contact the office for further guidance.

Conditions 1. Candidates will be required to satisfy the ordinary Entrance requirements of

the School. At Year 9 there must be a satisfactory performance in either the Academic Scholarship or Common Entrance Examination or the School’s own Entrance Examination. At Year 12 a successful candidate needs to have a minimum of five GCSE passes at Grade C or above.

2. No candidate who has already won an Award, or is awaiting the results from another school, may compete at Sedbergh without first producing evidence of leave from that school to do so.

3. All Scholarships are tenable on condition that the Headmaster is satisfied with the holder’s good conduct and industry.

4. There will be a formal, annual review of each Scholar’s performance and behaviour. In accordance with the Scheme of Management Scholarships may be withdrawn should the Scholar not meet the expected standards.

5. It is expected that holders of Scholarship awards will remain at Sedbergh School until the completion of their A-level courses at the end of the Upper Sixth Form year. Exceptional reasons for prior withdrawal must be brought to the Headmaster’s attention at the earliest opportunity.

6. The Headmaster will allocate Scholars to a House. He will consider, where possible, the wishes of parents expressing an order of preference on the Registration Form.

7. The Headmaster reserves the right to increase or reduce the number and/or value of the Awards.

8. In assessing Scholarship candidates, definite allowance will be made for age.

9. If the ISEB Common Scholarship is taken, the cost incurred will be borne by the candidate.

10. Music Scholars will be expected to play a full part in the musical life of the School, throughout their time at Sedbergh School. This may involve taking part in orchestras, bands, choir and choral society.
