Do Support our Advertisers
You will see that a good mix of people
have responded to our offer of advertising
space in the Sedgeberrow Post, showing
us the services that they offer. Without
them we could not afford to produce this
newsletter, with its splash of colour and
information for the village.
Thanks to them all. So please do your bit.
Consider what they are offering very
seriously and when you respond make
sure that you let them know that you
heard about them here, between the pages
of our village newsletter.

Your Village needs You Have you any experiences you wish to share, a skill that could please our
villagers? Do please us all by submitting articles, recording your events and
most importantly, hitting our deadlines.
Editor‟s extra request: Calling all village under 18s. Have you ever
penned a poem, drafted a drawing, crafted a cartoon, juggled jokes, or just
have tales to tell? If so, share them with us in the Sedgeberrow Post and hit
the small time!
Submitting material for publication If you are a local villager you will have a choice of a double A5 page
spread, a single A5 page, a half page and a quarter page. We have some
estimates of how many words you will need for each size. These are just
approximations and will vary according to logos that you may also want to
feature and the number of large headlines that you want. By working to the-
se parameters when you are emailing your piece, you will help the
editorial process immensely. Some of you will have a basic template that
you can modify accordingly for each new issue. Email is best for us.
A double A5 page spread. - Approx 560 words (No 12 font)
A single A5 page. - Approx 280 words (No 12 font)
A half A5 page. - Approx 140 words (No 12 font)
A quarter A5 page. - Approx 60 words (No 12 font)
It‟s all free to villagers and with colour also available. Though our experi-
ence with the 2011 Christmas edition has taught us that we will have to ask
for an affordable donation from village groups who want a page full of
intense colour. That‟s if they think it‟s worth the extra expense.
Remember. If it‟s in too late you've two months to wait!
Talk to Mike, who will help you estimate how much space
you will need. (01386 881863)

Paraffin, Petrol and
Electricity.
I‟m an active member of the Historic Lighting Club and have recently been
researching the advertising of petroleum products, particularly Paraffin
Lamp Oil, from about 100 years ago. (The booklet that I produced is now
available). There is a natural tie-up with petroleum then and electricity to-
day, as I discovered when reading the Shire Booklet, Petroleum Collecta-
bles by Mike Berry. Both represented emerging technologies. The new
petroleum driven automobiles were challenging the status quo of older, well
established transport systems. Now electric cars are setting themselves up as
an alternative to cars dependent on declining fossil fuels and challenging the
status quo. The first petrol cars had to carry their own fuel in tins, (now very
collectable) as suppliers were few and far between. The cars were also very
expensive to buy. Efforts to provide regular fuel supplies, with enamel signs
aggressively selling their fuel at the newly built stopping points, led to
claims that these new structures were eyesores that spoiled the countryside.
Electric cars now also face similar scepticism, and complaints from some
quarters, for reasons that echo those that greeted the petrol engine. How we
hate change. Look at our roads now. Their widespread destruction of the
environment, the massive infrastructure they demand. You wonder what
happened to all the sceptics. We can‟t manage without roads now.
There is nothing like 100 years for putting things into perspective.

St Mary the Virgin: Sedgeberrow Village Church.
Looking to the future. Our village church has been around over 900 years, it was even mentioned in the
Doomsday Book. Apparently many years ago the church was the centre of village
life even holding livestock markets inside. Our vicar, Revd Mark Binney, also tells
me that the purpose of the altar rail originally was to stop animals wandering
around the altar. However things move on and today the church is struggling to
remain relevant to today‟s society. Our mission at St Mary‟s, formulated last year,
was to reach out into the community of Sedgeberrow in an effect to give greater
access to the people as a whole and to make it a focus again for all residents.
One of the ways we can do this is to change the way the church building can be
made more “user friendly”. We have an ambitious plan to change the layout and
use of the church, apart from the obvious regular church services.
Our 3 stage plan is as follows. 1) Improve the heating dramatically. 2)
Remove some pews to give better use of space for weddings, funerals & school
activities. 3) Install a toilet, kitchen and meeting room in the vestry.
Stage 1. In the next few weeks we anticipate upgrading the heating, which most
people who have attended our church would agree is critical to making any visit
more comfortable. By so doing we hope that more of our community will feel in-
clined to attend, if not regularly then special services such as Christmas, Easter
etc. For over a year now we have been holding a coffee morning on the fourth
Thursday of the month inviting every villager, including new residents, mums,
dads & children to come along, have a coffee/tea & cake just to sit and chat, meet
your neighbours and friends. Even buy a few trinkets from the couple of stalls.
The new layout will help these popular events be even more popular. We extend a
warm welcome to everyone, please come along and join in.
Last year we also had a display of Christmas trees put on by village groups, which
looked wonderful with over 20 groups decorating a tree each. Do come along and
see the display.
Stage 2. Re-arranging two or three pews and re-siting the organ will take place
just after Christmas.
Stage 3.Following an application to the National Lottery we hope to start work
on the vestry project some time in 2013
We, the PCC, are determined this should become a more accessible place for
everyone and we welcome any suggestions for activities or events that could take
place in the church. It is after all YOUR church and we would love to see more
people from Sedgeberrow use it. We look forward with anticipation for your sup-
port for your better community life. Whether you choose to use the church or not
we hope you have a peaceful Christmas and a joyful new year. Thank you and
God Bless. Sedgeberrow PCC

Watch this space for cheaper energy. There is a scheme afoot in far off
South Lakeland to sign up for cheaper energy. Over one thousand households have
already signed up to a free energy scheme, which puts energy buying power into
the hands of the community. Their District Council are working with specialist
company iChoosr, who will negotiate with the energy companies on behalf of
everyone signed up to the scheme to get the best tariff possible at that time. With a
bit of luck the scheme could start up here. Interested? Have a look at their website. http://www.southlakeland.gov.uk . Enter cheaper energy in “I‟m looking for.”

NEW YEAR‟S EVE VILLAGE PARTY
I have been urged for two years to organize another New Year Party after
the success of the previous two. It is too much for just Wendy & myself to
do but if I can get some help the room is booked. The consensus is that it
should be more akin to a village party (as of olden days) than a straight for-
ward disco thingy. If anyone would like to organise a couple of silly games
(we have a couple up our sleeve), help with the hall, decorations etc, please
feel free. Suggestions of other activities will be welcome.
As usual bring your own drinks and snackaroonies. Tickets we thought to
be £5.00 per adult. £1.00 children over 12. Under 12s free. Proceeds of the
ticket sale to the village hall fund (which is desperately short at this
moment). Proceeds of the raffle to be split between St Richards Hospice
and the Acorns Children‟s Hospice.
Collette Mallin has generously agreed to take calls on 01386 881014 along
with Wendy and myself on 01386 830745.
Providing we have sufficient response it will run. Come along and have a
jolly good knees-up. Welcome in the New Year amongst family & friends.

What a Night……
Whalebone at the Village
Hall, Sedgeberrow
We really did not know what to expect from Whalebone. They proved to be two
guitarists and a fiddle-player who entertained us with an evening of original tunes
and vibrant interpretations of music ranging from folk music to Led Zeppelin
delivered with energy and professionalism.
Whalebone certainly lived up to their strap-line "High energy acoustic music". A
great evening's entertainment! Rohan and Diana Page
Steve, Charlotte and Sarah – collectively known as „Whalebone‟ – gave us a
truly entertaining and enjoyable evening at the Village Hall last Friday, 26th Octo-
ber. Although there was a relatively small attendance – 30 max I would imagine –
„Whalebone‟ created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with their warm humour,
folk tales and incredible musical talent (the rare 8-string baritone guitar was a
special treat). From joining in with the chorus to „The „Boxer‟, listening to the
violin „sing‟ and an emotional rendition of „Stairway to Heaven‟, to performing
the actions to the „Wenlock Hare‟, I can honestly say that a „Whale‟ of a time was
had by all! Chris Long
What a night, the best music I have heard in the village for a long time. I went
along not knowing what kind of music I was about to hear - people had tried to
explain what kind of music they played - I am talking about Whalebone
Their music is a merger of Celtic, with bluesy riffs and traditional tunes, with
rock. That may seem strange, but we heard some of the best electric fiddle and
acoustic guitar playing, from 3 very laid-back musicians. The (small) audience
had a great night.
I only hope they come back, maybe next year. If they do, please come along - you
won‟t be disappointed. To hear some of their music, go to their website at
www.whalebone-music.com (Mrs) Chris Trewick

Bulk Buying of LPG Gas An update
Meanwhile please help by sharing information about the prices
that you are paying. It would be very helpful if anyone in the vil-
lage buying bulk gas or a red cylinder would contact SeSaME
with the following details: supplier‟s name, date ordered, cylinder
size, price ex VAT and your street name. That information can
then be shared later amongst village buyers. Contributors of this

South Worcestershire Development Plan
Wychavon District Council will meet on 10th December to consider the officer re-
sponses and recommendations SEDGEBERROW PARISH COUNCIL relating to
the Significant Changes consultation and the first draft of the SWDP. If approved
it will be published for a 6 week pre-submission consultation in January and sub-
mitted to the Secretary of State in March. The papers for the Council meeting will
be released and made available to view on the Wychavon and SWDP websites
from the week beginning 26th November.
Planning Proposal
Prior to its last meeting, the Parish Council heard a brief presentation from Stans-
gate Planning regarding a proposed development of land to the rear of 43-57 Main
Street. It is proposed to submit an outline planning application for the develop-
ment with all matters except access reserved until a specific developer is involved.
Stansgate Planning intend to hold a public consultation in the Betteridge Room on
Wednesday 28th November between 4.00pm and 7.30pm when residents can see
the proposals and make comments.
Bus Service and Parked Vehicles
The County Council has received complaints and photographs from Astons Coach-
es regarding the difficulties that their drivers face on manoeuvring around the vil-
lage and that this stretch of road costs them far more in damages than any other
road they regularly use. They have issues with parking by local residents and dur-
ing school times where traffic becomes heavier. School and peak time loadings
necessitate the need for larger buses to be used. The alternative is to withdraw
buses from using the circulatory road through the village, but this would disad-
vantage passengers and school children, meaning that they would have to walk
from the old Cheltenham Road. County Council highway officers have been asked
to consider waiting restrictions (i.e. yellow lines) in order to maintain vehicle
flows and to look at the old Cheltenham Road for an area that is safe for the school
bus to pull in. In the meantime, residents who park in the street are urged to con-
sider the need for emergency vehicles and other larger vehicles that need to move
freely through the village.
Litter Bins
A floor-mounted bin has been ordered from Wychavon District Council and will
be installed in the Jubilee Play Area. A further floor-mounted bin has also been
ordered for the Bus Shelter. The small post-mounted bin that is currently outside
the Bus Shelter is to be moved to the junction of Main Street and Cheltenham
Road, close to the wooden seat.
Post Boxes
The Parish Council has contacted Royal Mail to enquire whether it could provide

has stated that this is not possible because its Post Boxes are designed with the se-
curity of mail in mind and therefore the slot size that prevents unlawful entry.
Vehicle Activated Sign
The Parish Council has agreed to purchase a Portable Vehicle Activated Speed
Sign for use in the village, but firstly the County Council Highways Dept needs to
identify suitable locations where it can be deployed and to assess the locations for
safety and suitability.
Cheltenham Road Footway
The condition of the Cheltenham Road footway has been of concern for several
years but County Council funds have always been directed to other more urgent
cases in the County. The footway has now been divided into 6 sections giving an
order of priority and these will be assessed by the County Council and will be re-
surfaced section by section as and when funding is available.

The New Homes Bonus is a national initiative whereby for every new home built

October Activity: Members of our book club visited the Literary Festival in Cheltenham to
hear the author P.D.James. There was a group meeting in Winchcombe
when we heard many amusing tales from the lady toastmaster. Sadly, our
entry in the 'hat' competition was not successful although the knitted Queen
and her corgis were much admired. Mr. Peter Jackon gave a very interest-
ing talk on the making of a will which gave us lots of food for thought.
November Activity: We had our skittles evening in Dumbleton, this is always good fun. Chris
won the competition. Judith held an equally enjoyable scrabble evening and
we had our annual shopping trip to Solihull.
Things to look forward to in December-- An icing class ready for Christ-
mas. The Christmas Concert in Cheltenham Town Hall, the guest performer
being Lesley Garrett. A Christmas Chorale at our December Meeting. Last
but not least our Christmas dinner at Dumbleton Hall.
Programme for 2013:
The programme is now ready for 2013 and we have some interesting speak-
ers and events to look forward to, beginning in January when we shall hear
from Richard Gaffrey about Fiesta Cakes. Our book club and coffee morn-
ings will continue as usual, and as always everyone is welcome.
Have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year
P.S. A little smile from the N.Z. W.I. Magazine, "Inner Strength" If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills. If you can be cheerful,

“Journalistic bunkum jars us into a jam.”
You may recall a barmy article in the press recently, saying that EU regula-
tions meant that the WI and local charity fundraisers couldn‟t use recycled
jam jars for their preserves. The whole article was totally misleading. The
regulations quoted obviously don‟t apply to the WI and local jam makers and
all the journalist had to do was to check with the European Commission to
confirm that fact. You may not want a pinch of salt for jam making, but it‟s
certainly necessary for reading bits of the press. (Editor)

The key documents and information that criminals would like to get hold of are
your:
Passport
Driving Licence
Bank account details - cheque books, debits cards, receipts and statements
Credit card details - cards, statements and receipts
Other information can also be useful to criminals, such as dates of birth, home
addresses and even the names of your next of kin. Much of this information is
routinely posted by people on the internet - either during transactions with retailers
or through social networking sites. It pays to think carefully about what you want
to disclose online.
Got an Issue? Communities can play an active role in the fight against crime by providing
us with valuable information about what is happening in your area. If you
have any information or concerns you can raise them by: calling 101 to speak
to your local police team, calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to report
information anonymously.

Fraud And Identity Theft
What Information Are Criminals Interested In?
Fraud and identity theft is one of the fastest growing areas of crime and occurs
when your personal information is used by someone else without your knowledge.
While overall levels of crime remain low across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford
& Wrekin and Worcestershire, the nature of modern technology and communica-
tions means that people can fall victim to criminals both here and in other parts of
the world.
Your identity and personal information are valuable to criminals. If they can find
out your details, they can use your name to open bank accounts, get credit cards
and loans or apply for state benefits and documents such as passports and driving
licences. If your identity is stolen, you may have difficulty getting loans, credit
cards or a mortgage until the matter is sorted out and you could also find yourself
liable for financial losses caused by criminals using your identity.

SEASONAL WINTER WALK
On Sunday January 6th at 11.00am there will be a short walk
via Hinton on local footpaths starting from the School. It will
cover no more than 3 miles and last less than 2 hours. So if
you feel like stretching your legs at an easy pace after the
Christmas and New Year festivities please come along…….
you‟ll be very welcome!! As is usual for a rural walk you
should wear suitable clothing and footwear, and bring a
snack and drink. Although the route is flat, surfaces will vary
and also cross stiles and narrow bridges.
Kindly note that if necessary the walk will be amended or cancelled.
OTHER FOOTPATH MATTERS
Although the winter months make the countryside seem bare, it often gives
the opportunity to see the lovely scenery in our area much better. It also helps
in other ways, as hazards on our rights of way are easier to spot and deal with,
as there is less undergrowth. If you are walking out and about in the area and
see any problems on the footpaths please let me know.
Also as you are probably aware 25% of the homes in Sedgeberrow were
affected by the 2007 flood, and as a community we are keen to lessen the
impact of possible flooding. So if you happen to be walking by the River
Isbourne or its feeder streams and ditches, can you keep an eye out for any
major obstructions in the water or on the banks as the Environment Agency
has asked to be alerted?
Finally many thanks to all of you who have taken an interest in our footpaths
throughout 2012, and may I wish everyone an enjoyable Christmas and a
peaceful New Year.

a lot of fun making their own smooth-

In November we will be holding an E-safety week teaching the children all
about how to stay safe when using the internet and other devices. There will

WASSAIL & Father Christmas
Sedgeberrow CE First School would like to wish everyone a
very merry christmas and a peaceful new year.
A Childhood Scene
Words have always meant a great deal to me, though I‟ve never been
musical.
When I was a ten year old girl at the village primary school we had one
music lesson a week, singing with the piano. But one day we were told that
two music students from the nearby University would be coming to give us
a different sort of music lesson. We were to hear a piece of classical music
on the gramophone, the students would talk about it and later they would
test our reactions.
Two young male students, handsome and nervous arrived with an older
man, probably their assessor, and when he went to have a word with our
headmaster, the taller and handsomer of the students caught my eye and
whispered to his companion, “My, she‟s going to be a looker”
It was the first time that I‟d felt that tingle of excitement right down to
my toes that such a compliment provokes. I intended to do my best in re-
turn. One of the students said that the music was inspired by a beautiful day
in the countryside. To me the piece seemed over-long and meant little.
We were asked for our comments. I began. And went on. And on. I
saw little rounded hills, a little stream, wild roses, a small white cottage in
the distance, even felt the warm breeze on my cheeks.
My admirer certainly had his fair return. There was no time for anyone
else to say a word.
“That girl is very musical,” the assessor said.
“Musical? No, she‟s just a great show-off,” the headmaster told him.

haircut, I‟ve been SCALPED! it‟s a good job she left my tail alone other-

Doofuss if he does anymore micky taking he will get my paw round his ear
‟ole.
While on the subject of Doofuss he has developed the habit of cocking his
head from side to side when the two-legs talks to him, he thinks it makes
him look intelligent, as if he actually understands (yeah, as if!) – „course,
she obviously can‟t hear the one and only brain cell rattling like a marble in
a smartie tube but, rest assured, I can ...
On a much more cheerful note, we had a smashing two-legs called Suzie
staying with us. She was very good at scratching our ears and didn‟t seem
to mind too much when either of us jumped on her lap (mind you, she was-
n‟t too keen when we both wanted to get on her lap at the same time - funny
that!) Oh yeah, she‟s promised to knit me a nice warm coat – see I told you

SEDGEBERROW FLOOD GROUP
www.sedgeberrow.info Flood Warden - Richard Hunt 01386 882079 Secretary – [email protected]
Following on from the Flood Group
led Isbourne River Bank Survey, the
EA has responded with its own
banksman visit and a detailed report
back. Upstream of Sedgeberrow, the
river is in good shape and does not
require any intervention at this stage.
However, downstream of the village (past the bypass bridge) some signifi-
cant blockages have been identified which the EA (Environmental Agency)
are going to deal with. The good news is that nothing of major significance
has been identified between the village and the bypass at this point in time.
But the state of the river is never static and frequent monitoring will be
required to pick up any changes. We hope to keep an eye on things as a
group but if any villagers notice a blockage whilst walking the river
please contact Richard Hunt, the Flood Warden on 01386 882079 or
any other Flood Group member.
We have also seen further activity from the Highways Agency who are con-
ducting a major survey on the culverts both East & West of the A46 at
Sedgeberrow. All the ecological surveys have been completed and more
recently the flooding flow modelling surveys were undertaken, this time
with staff dressed head to foot in orange around the bridge and river area.
We eagerly await the results from this survey due sometime late 2012.
The Flood Group has again been in contact with our local MP Harriett
Baldwin who has raised on our behalf concerns about redundancies in the
Environment Agency and the potential impact on flood related functions.
We have received a letter from Lord Taylor of Holbeach (on behalf of the
Secretary of State for Defra) stating that none of the 800 EA redundancies
are expected to impact flood risk and front-line services. Never the less the
Flood Group remain sceptical about government investment in flood de-
fences and remain in regular contact with the team in Tewkesbury to ensure
that all opportunities for the community to assist are maximised.
The thorny subject of flood property insurance is continually monitored
by the Flood Group and Sedgeberrow residents are encouraged to raise their
specific concerns with Sue Morris, who leads for the group on Insurance
related queries.(Tel: 01386 882423)or at [email protected]),
