I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking... An early Shanah Tovah to you and your family. I pray this year of 5773 will be a good year for you and yours and that s w ee t nes s , hea l t h and happiness shine brightly in what is sometimes an otherwise dark and uncertain world. As we greet each other at Temple or in other places as the

new year approaches, we offer to our friends a “Shanah Tovah! - a good year.” Interestingly enough, we say Shanah Tovah in the Hebrew but wish people a “Happy New Year” in English. I often wonder why the Jewish salutation at the start of the year is “Shanah Tovah - a Good Year”. In our secular calendar we wish everyone Happy New Year. Why don’t we do the same for the Jewish year? Is there something different about wishing for good rather than wishing for happy? What is it really we are wishing for when we wish for happiness or goodness? Think of the different phrases using happy or good. Happy birthday! Why not good birthday? Have a good week! Or more politely, Good Day! Why not have a h a p p y w e e k ? Interestingly we offer a “Good Shabbes!” (as my Bubbe used to say it!) or in Hebrew a “Shabbat Shalom”, but not a happy Shabbat. While we do say, “Chag Sameach!” roughly “Happy Holidays” for the Jewish festivals, the word “sameach” is better translated as “joyful” which I suggest to you is not the same as happiness. So what’s going on? What is Judaism trying to teach us by using Shanah Tovah – a Good Year?

I believe the answer lies in the opening chapters of Torah, in the creation story where the canvas of the world is being painted upon with the Divine brush. Finally, after all of creation had been finished, the Torah tells us that God rested on the seventh day and declared it holy. So in a sense, God created a space to appreciate the work of creation. Thank God for that!! But the adjective that God uses to describe creation is so important. God doesn’t describe God’s own work as “stupendous” or “fantastic” (my preferred adjective) or “wonderful” or “A+” and certainly does not use the word “happy”. No, the word God uses to describe all of creation – “good”.

The highest attainable adjective bestowed by God is not happy, but good. Incredible!

I further believe that the juxtaposition of the declaring the seventh day holy and the calling of creation good is no mistake or accident. And therein lies the answer. Our call to goodness is a call to holiness. When we wish someone a “good year” what we are really doing is hoping that their year is filled with moments of holiness, moments of Godly encounters, moments of imitating God’s actions. What we wish for is that their year is filled with meaning, with experiences that help to make our world a better and brighter place.

As George Bernard Shaw wrote, “This is the true joy of life. The being used for a

purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. The being a force of nature instead of a feverish and selfish clod of ailments and grieving senses complaining that the world will not devote itself to

making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and that as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I

have got to hold up for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”

Armed with the wishes from others to make this place better, we can go out into the world to face the daunting challenges that we, our families and those we know, as well as those we have yet to encounter, experience every day and make the world less scary, less uncertain and definitely more holy – and thereby making the world, as God described it, “Very Good”.

Don’t get me wrong – I am all for being happy. I believe in the power of positive thinking and feeling moments of joy. But Judaism asks us to transcend our own desires for personal happiness as first and foremost and to try to work on making the good/holy happen for others. When that happens we will have not only a good year, but I am sure a sweet one as well. Good luck! And may you and yours have a good, meaningful and holy year.

From The President

August 2012 brought typical Dallas summer heat. It also brought Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, to Dallas where he led and participated in our Temple Board of Trustees’ meeting. What was initially planned as a “virtual” interaction with Rabbi Jacobs changed when he was able to alter his travel schedule and asked if he could visit in person with the Temple Executive Committee and the Board. Of course, his offer was accepted and what an honor and a treat it was for us to hear from him, speak with him and learn from him. He shared his vision of the URJ as a rabbi with 30 years of congregational experience and emphasized the need for continued change and growth, individually, congregationally, and as a union of almost 900 Reform congregations in North America. His

enthusiasm, wisdom and passion was inspiring and I sincerely look forward to a time he can return to Dallas to share his insight with our entire congregation. On behalf of the entire congregation, it was my honor to thank him for taking the time and making the effort to join us.

August also brought our extended family and many friends to Dallas as our daughter, Lauren, became a Bat Mitzvah. I mention this because it is rather unusual that a Temple President gets to share the bima with his/her child for this simcha. What makes it even more unusual is that my two predecessors, Steve Enda and Meredith Richardson, were able to do the same with their daughters. What a joy, honor and blessing!

September brings the High Holy Days. I look forward to seeing you and your families as we welcome in the new year together, as a holy community.

October 7 will be the Temple’s Food Truck Palooza! Please join us as we host selected Dallas area food trucks at Temple from 11:00am - 700pm. Invite friends and relatives to what will be a fun way to enjoy a wide variety of great food. Then join us inside for our Simchat Torah service to make a fantastic day complete.

October’s Temple Golf Tournament is taking place October 15th at Honors Golf Club. Sponsorships, player-spots and volunteer opportunities are available for this significant Temple fund-raiser. Please contact James Bier at [email protected] or Mark Fishkind at [email protected] to find your place with this event.

We have great things happening at Temple Shalom. Read through the newsletter, find a class, volunteer opportunity, council, committee or auxiliary group to connect with our Temple community and COME GROW WITH US!

Constitution Evolution

Last month, we as a congregation reviewed Article II of the constitution, and we thank you for all your thoughtful comments and input. The Board will be considering Article II at its September Board meeting. This month, as we continue the evolution of our constitution, we look at Article IX, which addresses congregational meetings. Currently the Article reads as follows:

MEETINGS Section 1. The annual meeting of the Congregation shall be held in the month of May. At this meeting, reports shall be submitted by the President, by the Senior Rabbi and by any auxiliaries or committees as scheduled by the Board of Trustees. In addition, an annual budget of the Congregation for the coming fiscal year shall be approved by majority vote of the voting members of the Congregation present at the annual meeting at which a quorum is present. Every member of the Congregation shall be notified of the meeting and the location thereof by mail at least twenty one days prior to the meeting date.

Section 2. Special meetings of the Congregation may be called by the President, or at the request of a majority of the Board of Trustees, or on written application of at least twenty five regular members of the Congregation. The call for a special meeting shall set forth the purpose of the meeting and written notice thereof shall be mailed to all members at least seven days prior to the time of such meeting; no business shall be transacted except that specified in the call.

Section 3. The number of voting members of the Congregation constituting a quorum at meetings of the Congregation shall be equal to five percent (5%) of the number of eligible voting member units of the Congregation, as most recently determined by the Secretary of the Congregation in accordance with Article 3. For example, if the number of units of regular membership of the Congregation is 1,000, 50 (5% of 1,000) voting members must be present at a Congregation meeting to constitute a quorum at such meeting.

As this Article addresses congregational meetings, we want your opinion on whether we can change the title to “congregational meetings” for this article. Additionally, there are several congregational decisions that some believe should require more than a simple majority who show up at a meeting (like to merge the congregation with another temple or to sell the building). In particular, the following additional section is presented to you for comment and consideration:

Section 4. For the Congregation to undertake any of the following acts, a vote of not less than two-thirds of at least thirty-five percent of the Congregants then in good standing, as defined in Article V hereof, shall be required: (i) relocation of the Congregation from 6930 Alpha Road, Dallas, Texas to another permanent location; (ii) sale or long term lease of the property or building at 6930 Alpha Road, Dallas, Texas; (iii) incurring indebtedness of a cumulative principal equal to or in excess of fifty percent of the budgeted, annual revenue of the Congregation at the time the indebtedness is incurred; (iv) de-affiliation with, or withdrawal of the Congregation from, Reform Judaism or the URJ; (v) merger of the Congregation with any other group, congregation or religious organization; (vi) dissolution of the Congregation; (vii) execution of any employment contract for a primary term exceeding ten years; or (viii) amendment to or suspension of this Article.

Finally, we want your opinion about including electronic mail as a form of giving notice for board meetings, which saves the temple postage and could be used to send out information more quickly. The proposal might be something added to Section 1 such as “The term ‘mail’ throughout this constitution shall be defined to include but not be limited to postal or electronic mail.” Those that have stated they prefer to receive their newsletter via U.S. Postal Service could continue to receive their notices the same way, but it would give temple the option to save money for others.

We want and need your feedback. Do you think we should keep the original Article IX as is? Do you like or object to the proposed alternative version/additions? Do you have any grammatical or substantive suggestions for improving either version or a completely different version you would like to propose?

Please email your thoughts and suggestions to Dennis Eichelbaum at [email protected], who will share your suggestions with the Board.

Thank you and Chag Sameach,

Aric L. Stock, Temple President Dennis Eichelbaum, Vice President

High Holy Day Worship is High Drama—Witness the New Ritual! Synagogue worship as we practice it today is nothing less than a theatrical

experience. Based on writings found in the Bible, the Talmud and by the Roman-

Jewish historian Josephus, we know that by the time the Temple in Jerusalem was

established there was a Kohen, a high priest, who directed the ritual. His assistants,

the Levites, played musical instruments and sang the Psalms at specific times during

the worship services. The Kohen would recite the 10 commandments, the Levites

with the Kohen would perform “call and response” prayers leading up to the main

spectacle, the sacrifice of animals, to ask for forgiveness or to ask for a good crop or

the recovery of an ill loved one. Finally the Kohen would bless the throngs gathered

with the “Priestly Benediction.”

This “high theatre” has continued to this day. In orthodox shuls the chazzan (cantor) leads the worship,

the choir and congregation now sing the call and response and the rabbi blesses the people with the

“Priestly Benediction.” The chazzan wears a robe, a tallit and a special head-covering called a mitre. The

rabbi wears one as well. The chazzan faces away from the congregation to the east, along with the

congregation. There is choreography called davening: bowing at the Bar’chu, at the beginning of the

T’fillah section; up on toes three times during the K’dusha. There is even a major “theatrical event” during

the High Holy Days: a re-enactment of the Mishnaic description of what happened after the Kohen went

into the holiest part of the Temple where the tablets of the 10 commandments once were kept; where God

Almighty dwelled.

“When the priests and the people who stood in the Temple court heard the High Priest utter God’s holy

and awesome Name, they fell upon their faces and, prostrate, exclaimed: Blessed is God’s glorious

kingdom forever and ever!” (Gates of Repentance, p. 424)

In an ultra-orthodox shul everyone who is able re-enacts this event by prostrating themselves as the

description is read. In a conservative synagogue, the cantor and the rabbi re-enact this event but in a

Reform Temple it is rare to see this drama take place, although I did hear from several colleagues that

they perform this ritual. I did it when I was the cantor serving my first pulpit. It was incredibly meaningful

to me and made a dramatic statement for the congregation regarding the sanctity of the day.

Now, I am going to perform this ritual as I serve my last pulpit. Rabbi Brant Rosen, Rabbi of the Jewish

Reconstructionist Congregation in Evanston, Illinois wrote that, “It is truly the most universally humbling of

gestures – a simple yet profound way to empty one’s ego and recognize the existence in the universe of a

power greater than oneself.”

I hope that as you witness this ritual, you will also recognize the awesomeness of the Holy Days and

feel the presence of the power that is God.

Jan and I wish all of you a very Happy New Year.

B’nai Mitzvah Revolution: An Exciting Opportunity

The journey of Jewish learning is an ongoing, ever-expanding one that is at

times thrilling, sometimes uncertain, but always valuable.

Our congregation has been invited to participate in a Hebrew Union College/

Union for Reform Judaism co-sponsored program called The B’nai Mitzvah

Revolution (BMR). The BMR program is a pilot program of the URJ Campaign

for Youth Engagement and is designed to address the issues of continued

youth engagement before, during and after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience.

We know how important this moment is in the lives of our families. We also recognize that there

is a decline in students continuing their Jewish education after Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The BMR seeks

to turn that statistic around. (For more information regarding dropout rates, please see the

following article at http://reformjudaismmag.org/Articles/index.cfm?id=1538.) After discussing

this opportunity with Rabbi Paley and our Temple leadership, we have accepted the invitation

and are preparing to join several other Reform congregations in this exciting process.

The B’nai Mitzvah revolution is a process of discovery, a process of thoughtful learning about

what Bar/Bat Mitzvah has been, is and could be. While we engage in this exciting discovery, we

will be continuing our Bar and Bat Mitzvah program in its current form.

It is also very important to note that a Shabbat service in which a child becomes a Bar/Bat

Mitzvah will always be a part of our Temple Shalom experience.

During this process, we will be looking closely at our Hebrew curriculum and whether it helps

create meaningful B’nai Mitzvah experiences. We will be looking closely at our B’nai Mitzvah

process – including the Family Retreat and the Parent Orientation – to determine whether it helps

to create meaningful experiences. We will be thoughtfully and intentionally examining what

makes this experience meaningful for all of our congregants.

This program is designed to guide our congregation through the conversations about what is

meaningful for our students, families and members. It is a guided journey that will help us look

deeply at what we can be doing to create more meaningful experiences that connect our families

more deeply to our Jewish community with the end goal being a deeper and greater connection

to our congregation.

We have formed a task force with members of the congregation from all ages and walks of life.

As we move through this process, I know we will be seeking your input. I invite you to call me at

972.661.1362 ext. 213, stop by my office or arrange a time when we can further discuss this

program. I would love to have a conversation with you about this meaningful and holy work in

which we are all engaged.

High Holy Days Food Drive 2012 – 5773

One of the High Holy Day traditions at Temple Shalom is the annual Food Drive. Just as last year, our primary beneficiary will be the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), with an additional feature this year: a portion of the funds we raise will be allocated to the Jewish Family Service(JFS) food pantry, serving our community here in North Dallas and the Vickery Meadow area. NTFB and JFS represent our commitment to serving the hungry among us, both throughout North Texas and right here in our very neighborhood. There will be three ways to help this year: • Go to the Temple Shalom website at www.templeshalomdallas.org

and follow the link from the home page to donate to our virtual food drive. NTFB will immediately email a tax deductible acknowledgement, OR

• Mail a check to the NTFB (in lieu of brown paper bags, pre-addressed envelopes will be distributed on Rosh Hashanah). NTFB will mail a tax deductible acknowledgement, OR

• Go to the Temple Shalom website at www.templeshalomdallas.org and follow the link from the home page to see Jewish Family Service’s list of recommended food items. Place food in one of the cardboard bins located outside our building.

We ask that you consider a financial donation equal to the amount of money you would spend on food to feed your family for a typical day. Our goal is to raise $10,000 in this year’s High Holy Days Food Drive to provide 30,000 meals to hungry families in our area.

Questions? Please contact Debra Levy-Fritts at [email protected] or (972) 239-2313.

BROTHERHOOD

BROTHERHOOD

BOARD MEETING Wednesday

September 19 7:15pm Boardroom

All Brotherhood Members Invited.

Stronger-Together!

So now it's September and we begin to ponder our High Holidays. While the Rabbi polishes his New Year message, the choir checks their voices and holiday finery one last time, the Brotherhood prepares to engage in one of its finest traditions...High Holiday ushering. I personally have ushered for a few years now, and each year is like the first year. There's a palpable excitement in the Sanctuary on the holidays, and fulfilling the role provides a great sense of pride for the Brotherhood. You must be a member of the Brotherhood to usher. If you haven't joined yet, contact Rick Protas at [email protected]; if you are a member, and you'd like to usher, contact Bill Hoffpauer at [email protected].

Now...if you like to fulfill mitzvot, be at the Temple the morning of September 9th for the Brotherhood Blood Drive. Give the gift of life. And, (it shouldn't be a total loss), have a few pancakes, courtesy of your loyal Brotherhood kitchen team. It's the annual Brotherhood pancake breakfast.

September 19th is our monthly Board meeting. All Brotherhood members are encouraged to attend. And on September 23rd, the Brotherhood gets into construction (Oy Vey!) when we build the Sukkah at 11:00am. Pick up a hammer and lend a hand.

To you and your families: Best wishes for a happy and sweet New Year! L’Shalom, Scott Butnick President, Temple Shalom Brotherhood

Remember the Temple

in Your Will

Temple Shalom is committed to preserving the future of our congregation for generations to come. Bequests of all sizes are important resources for the Temple, and we encourage you to be a link to the future by remembering the Temple in your will. Your lasting tribute is your commitment to the survival of our religion, our Temple, and our people.

A bequest can easily be established by adding a simple codicil to your will. Additionally, many other options exist to leave a legacy for Temple Shalom.

Our mission is to inspire in you a

relationship with God, Torah and the

Jewish people. Do you know someone we

should invite to Temple, someone who is

new to Dallas or is not connected to a

congregation?

Please contact Executive Director

Steve Lewis so we can show them

that Temple Shalom is their place.

Does donating to Temple Shalom without it costing you anything sound "too good to be true"? That's exactly what the service provided by GiveSmart does. It's free to you and to Temple Shalom. All you do is register and then conduct your normal eCommerce shopping by

shopping through this site: http://igivesmart.com/templeshalom. Each purchase you make returns a percentage of the sale to Temple Shalom. It's easy, smart, quick, safe, and yet doesn't cost you a single penny extra. Most importantly, it's a huge help to Temple Shalom. Invite your friends and family to shop!

If you have any questions, please contact Heidi in the Admin. Office at [email protected].
