See, I am making all things new. —Revelations 21:5

I am thrilled to be joining you in ministry at Elk River Lutheran Church! My wife, Annie, and I were each born and raised in North Dakota and called Minnesota home during college (St. Kate's in St. Paul for Annie and Concordia in Moorhead for me). We met while I was a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul and Annie was working for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. We got married in 2008 and moved to Minot, ND in 2009 for my first call at Zion Lutheran Church. Annie is a Speech Language Pathologist and has worked for the Minot School District for three years. We have two boys; Theodore (Teddy) is two years old and Stanley is three months old.

We have bought a house in Elk River and plan to close and move at the end of September. My official start date at ERLC will be October 3 and I'll be preaching for the first time October 9. I look forward to meeting you all and joining in God's work at ERLC.

Peace, Pastor Nathan Mugaas

Pastor’s Message Grace and peace from our Lord Jesus Christ.

Though we knew the day would come when my interim time would end, the time has now come for me to say farewell. Thank you for these past 16 months; we have laughed, we have cried, we have faced challenges, and by God's Grace, we have all grown.

Your love and kindness has given me the courage and strength to follow God’s will. I want to thank the council, the team leaders and the staff for their friendship and support. The leaders of ERLC are people of integrity living with devotion to pursue God’s will. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with all of you. Members of Elk River Lutheran Church, you already know how to love and care for a pastor. You have a beautiful mission statement that you will soon be living out under the guidance of your new pastor. Continue to grow in your love for Christ, trusting in the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you. I sincerely believe you have all the necessary resources needed for this church to grow and serve. Don't let scarcity-thinking hold you back. September 18 will be my last Sunday in the pulpit. September 25 I will be at the Confirmation Retreat. My last day in the office will be September 30. Tuesdays at 6:30pm for the coming weeks, there will yoga on the upper level.

Know that I am holding you all in my prayers during this transition.

On Sunday, Aug 21, in an Umbrella Meeting, ERLC Staff, Ministry Team Members, and Council met to plan Sept-Dec Ministry Events, Rally Day, Ministry Fair and discuss welcoming Pastor Nathan. Ministry teams were also encouraged to begin initial planning for 2017 budget with initial budgets due Oct 31.

Since May 2015, Pastor Michelene has served as our Interim Pastor with joy, love, care, and selflessness. She has put ERLC’s needs before her own. Pastor Michelene has made a difference in the lives of young and old by providing pastoral care, contributing to Confirmation, attending ministry team meetings, being involved with Sunday School, and leading worship.

From a Council perspective, Pastor Michelene challenged and guided the council with a depth of intelligence. She knows how to lead a church and how a council needs to best serve a congregation. She exemplifies our mission statement and the Word from Acts 20:35:

In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

Thank you, Pastor Michelene, for your dedication and extraordinary pastoral service. Elk River Lutheran Church is blessed because of you. You will be missed and always treasured!

With the news of Pastor Nathan accepting our call and with establishing his start date as Oct 3, there is much to be excited about. At the same time, keep Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, in your prayers. For while we celebrate, they are dealing with sadness as Pastor Nathan and family depart.

Thank you to all ERLC members that were able to attend the Special Congregational Meeting on Aug 7. Also, a BIG THANK YOU to all of those who contributed.

September Book Study  Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Book Club begins its new cycle with the book, A MAN CALLED OVE by Fredrick Backman. This book is by a Swedish author on a man's journey into building relationships after the death of his dear wife, Sonia, whom he misses grievously. We will meet Monday, September 12, 1:00 pm at the home of Karen Sjobeck-Mahon, 19631 Lowell St. in Elk River. Please join us; the reading group is open to all and meets generally every other month. This popular best seller is a great place to start!

Small Group Studies: Thursdays at 10am (every other week): "My Neighbor is Muslim" is the topic for the group that will begin meeting every other week beginning on Thursday, September 15th at 10:00 AM at the church. The second meeting will be 2 weeks later on September 29th. This study is published by Lutheran Social Services and can be downloaded here. (http://lssmn.org/congregations/resources/)

Thursdays at 7pm (every other week): Study the book of Acts, written by Max Lucado, with John and Conni Natwick on every other week on Thursday evenings, at their home beginning on September 15. Call (763 276-1239) or email at [email protected] for directions.

New small groups will be forming throughout the year. Announcements of new groups will be posted through the bulletin and the newsletter.

Committee Announcements

Special thanks go to Barb Overbye and Peg Davies for their faithful work on the Hospitality Team. Charee Wagonfeil-Cain and Toby Moe now assume leadership.

Caring Ministry team is in need of someone to be in charge of the team and someone to be in charge of the Prayer Team. If you are interested, contact either Pastor Michelene or the office.

Happy September! I hope your summer went well. It always seems to go so quickly. With Choirboy tour, vacation, camps and such, my summer months

seemed to have less than 30 days in them. I’m sure it’s the same for you as well. But I do hope your time was spent well with your loved ones.

Ok, here begins our new 2016-2017 season. The choir has already started rehearsing on Wednesday nights. If you enjoyed singing in one of the Pop Up Choirs this summer, you should continue singing throughout the year. It’s so good for your soul. I’ll schedule more Pop Up Choirs for you, but consider singing regularly with the choir. I think the current members would agree I make rehearsals fun and enjoyable, while teaching about how to use the voice well. It’s also a great way to connect with more people of the church. Our current singers LOVE to chat with one another, and enjoy each other’s company. Praise Team will satisfy that

Music Notes

sense of community as well. This season I’m available to rehearse with them on Thursday nights. That means we can develop the team by adding more members and creating more music. Each of these ensembles serves well in our worship services. Not only do they provide an excellent means of small group fellowship, they also contribute significant meaningfulness to your weekly services. Choir and Praise Team are perfect entities to share your musical gifts and skills for church. Even if these two ensembles aren’t something you’d be interested in, I’m always looking for special music participants for this new season. Gabe Livingston, Grace Weber, and the Horner sisters (Audrey and Katherine) have shared their music with us. I invite many more to share their talents in this way.

I’m excited for Rally Sunday, and I’m excited for our new season in music. We’re such a joyful community when we sing together and play together. I want more of you to join in the experience.

See you Sunday, Taylor

Green Paraments Fabric artist, Melinda Colon, designed the new green paraments that can be seen in the sanctuary. Her inspiration for this set is John 7:38: “Let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.' ” This continues the river theme seen in the large window covering. The green set and the upcoming red set which will likely be delivered in Sept. or Oct. are a gift from Ron and Pam Black in memory of their parents, DJ and Elaine Black, Bill and Ruth Morgan.
