St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

From Our Pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler De Nuestro Párroco, Padre Mateo Zuberbueler

Dear Friends, As we approach the celebration of 50 years to the day since this church was dedicated by Bishop John Russell of Rich-mond (March 21, 1970), I have been trying to put myself in the shoes of the parishioners on that day. It must have been very exciting to enter the new church for the first time—it must have seemed enormous! At that time they were cele-brating Mass in the school building, before that in a Cul-more storefront building. Our church is very big but it also has an inviting and prayerful feel to it. People regularly remark about the calming effect they experience here. Of course, the real source of prayer, peace and calm is Jesus and, most of all, we celebrate His Presence here. When the people first saw the bright sun shine through the very tall and brightly colored stained glass windows they were, undoubtedly, impressed. Our windows say a lot about the faith of the people who designed them and about the times in which they were made. We are preparing a new version of a previously printed description of the many meanings conveyed by the windows. This Sunday, when we hear and meditate on the mystery of Jesus’ Transfiguration, I thought I should point out to you that one of our windows, number 23 to be exact, holds an image of the Transfiguration. Number 23 is called the “The Passion and Lent” window. In Lent we always hear about the Transfiguration early in the penitential season, to shore up our faith and confidence before we face the Cross. Jesus permitted His Glory to shine forth for a short time so His Apostles might find courage to turn with Him toward Cal-vary. Facing the back of the church (toward the entrance) on the far right you will find Window 23. At the top you can see various reds and golds in a cross-like shape. There is an IHS monogram in the center of the lighted cross where we see the names of Moses and Elias (Elijah). Beneath this image of the Transfiguration we see twelve cups which con-vey Holy Thursday’s liturgy, the Last Supper. Jesus’ glory was too bright for the Apostles to understand entirely. Similarly, the sun shining through our windows can enhance our grasp of the great mysteries of our Faith,

but not in such a way that we understand everything fully. May our constant efforts to grow closer to Jesus find us ea-ger to love Him more, even in the mysterious ways He comes to us.

With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor

Prudence During These Times of Risk Because of the higher than usual risks of catching or spreading communicable illnesses, and because of heightened fears, we make these recommendations and changes based on advice from our Diocesan office of risk management:

Employees exhibiting symptoms of a communicable disease should remain at home, stay away from work, and avoid oth-ers for the duration of the illness and for 24 hours after symp-toms abate.

Parishioners with known symptoms of influenza should re-frain from attending Mass and other parish activities for the duration of their illness and up to 24 hours after the symp-toms abate.

We will temporarily suspend Holy Communion from the chalice at the Masses where it has been offered. At the Sign of Peace during Mass parishioners are welcome to convey their greeting of peace by a simple bow toward each other if they prefer not to shake hands.

Dear St. Anthony Families, Last week as we began the Lenten season, it was wonderful to see our preschoolers participate in receiving ashes and learning about the Stations of the Cross. They made drawings of each Station as well as beautiful purple crosses. Thank you for the support of our preschool! We are expanding and able to accept even more new children! We could also use more help and talents in the following areas:

Speaker for Career Day on April 1, in the morning

After school tutoring

Substitute teaching If you are able to help, please email me, [email protected]. On Thursday, April 2, 5:30-7:00 pm, we will have an open house showcasing the brand new expansion of our preschool. We are so pleased to be able to offer our young children a jump start on a life of learning and successful decision making with our wonderful and dedicated preschool faculty. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Mt.19:14 We hope many new families will come and see how their children’s lives can prosper with a Catholic Education. Thanks to the Spirit of St. Anthony Scholarship Fund, tuition assistance is available. With my thanks and prayers, Nora Buçaj Principal

The Shroud of Turin Talk and Replica Don’t miss this great opportunity to experience the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ in a way that can make this an unforgettable event in your life. This event will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Arlington on March 15 at 6:00 pm. Considered one of the greatest mysteries of our time, the Shroud of Turin continues to amaze and baffle scientists, doctors, histori-ans, artists and theologians. Scientists cannot explain the source of the image which contains photographic and 3-D properties on a cloth centuries old. But is this the actual burial cloth of Jesus Christ? Bill Wingard, a speaker for the Shroud, will present the case for authenticity that has already been delivered on the east and west coasts including M.I.T., and you can be the judge. Come see a full size replica of the Shroud and the photographic negative im-ages that sparked an explosion of scientific interest and debate over a century ago which continues to today. What message does the Shroud have for each of us?

Meditation for the fourth Week

Dearest Holy Mother, you are generous with all who seek you, have mercy on me. I entrust into your hands this knot which robs the peace of my heart, paralyzes my soul and keeps me from going to my Lord and serving Him with my life. Un-do this knot in my ability to love:

[Mention your request here], O Mother, and ask Jesus to heal my paralytic faith, which gets downhearted with the stones on the road. Along with you, dearest Mother, may I see these stones as friends. Not mur-muring against them anymore but giving endless thanks for them, may I smile trustingly in your power. Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Prayer to Mary, Undoer of Knots Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know very well how desper-ate I am, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the Evil One himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and inter-cessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot: [Mention your request here] I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all. You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

A correction in the second paragraph of the Novena brochure (POPE FRANCIS & OUR LADY section): “Through your grace, your intercession, and your example, deliv-er us from all evil, Our Lady, and untie the knots that prevent us from being united with God, so that we, free from sin and error, may find Him in all things, may have our hearts placed in Him, and may serve Him always in our brothers and sisters.”

Instrucciones: 1. Hacer la señal de la Cruz 2. Acto de Contrición 3. Rezar las tres primeras decenas del rosario 4. Oración (meditación) de la semana 5. Rezar las dos últimas decenas del rosario 6. Oración a María, Desatanudos 7.
