CHAIRMAN'S REPORT by Darold Shirwo

Congratulations SCC, NCC, CCC and AZ for making the Western Regional Meet in Laughlin a booming success. The meet had about 150 registrants and about 40 cars for judging and the Volunteers from all the chapters made registration, judging, the reception, the banquet, the tour, the brewery soiree and everything else a most enjoyable event. The contributions from all our sponsors was pivotal in giving us the resources to offer as much as possible to the members and we cannot thank them all enough. We are in the process of doing our accounting but at first blush I can say we made money. The next major event is the National in San Antonio and Jerry Louer is our wagon master, and he has planned another super tour for all that participate. I will tell you from my own experience from many of Jerry's tours that they enhance friendships and Corvette driving experiences. I would urge anyone that is thinking about going to join our Southern California road tour. The spring meet at John Piovesans was fabulous even though we had a bit of rain - I am still dry-ing my car out from the soaking. The fall meet will be at the Hobbs ranch and I need not say that each and every meet there has been a blockbuster so make plans ahead to come to the meet. There will be a tech session on June 10, 2017 in Ramona and there is a flyer inside to give you all the details - come down, learn, eat and kibitz. Please support your club and join the board and "SAVE THE WAVE”

On the Road Again By Carol Troyer

On the road again, it all began with 3 Corvettes (Louer’s 57, Troyer’s 67 and Shirwo’s 96) leaving from Krispy Kreme in Ontario. Along for the trip were the Inman’s driving a SUV to carry the water, luggage and anything else that wouldn’t fit into the Vettes, but most importantly the wine and makeup. Who wants hot wine and melted makeup? Lucky for us the SUV traveled with us, when they provided an emergency lift for a heatstroke victim. (More on that later.) A couple of more Corvettes (the Legate’s and the Hachigian’s) joined us along the way to our first night’s desti-nation, Tucson.

What an eventful, but not welcome, ride to San Antonio. There was a 57, 66 and 67 Vette on the tour. None had AC and being older cars, you never know what can happen. Well, the first day the temperatures got to 112 degrees by the time we stopped for lunch and continued to climb to a high of 116 degrees! Beverly looked like she might expire any minute so she caught a ride with Darold in his air-conditioned car. At a place called Tonopah, our first mishap occurred. While stopping for gas, it was noticed that a lot of water was coming from underneath our 67. Bad news! It was the water pump. With good for-tune coming our way, some kind local guy called and found us a new pump in a town 12 miles away. After making a run to get it, Don spent the next hour plus installing a new pump in 116-degree weather!

Also on that first day, we almost lost a passenger. Pat started experiencing all the signs of heat-stroke. With the help of Connie, because she could hardly stand up, Pat managed to climb into the SUV where she rode to the hotel. A scary event for sure! That’s when we wives started to really question the wisdom of our husbands to travel the roads in such extreme heat with no AC. Guess we should have questioned earlier! We all made it to the hotel where we met up with the other two cars on our road tour (the Mion’s and the Vignone’s). That made a total of seven Vettes plus the

SUV, the official group.

A highlight of the trip was a stop at Al Knochs Interiors. What an eye popping sight and expe-rience. It’s hard to describe. Everything imagi-nable must have been there! All I can say is if you have an opportunity to visit, you should take it. After two hours, we felt like there was plenty more to hear and see.

We celebrated across the miles with casual get-togethers each evening. On the 6th, we enjoyed a

champagne toast for Carol and Don’s Wedding Anniversary and on the 7th, Carol hosted a pizza

Page 7: See Page 6 for the Story & Photosstroke. With the help of Connie, because she could hardly stand up, Pat managed to climb into the SUV where she rode to the hotel. A scary event for

party for Don’s Birthday. At the end of each day we could share our experiences and build our sense of camaraderie.

Except for the heat, all seemed to be going relatively well. Boom! On our way to the “last night out,” a black cloud hit again. In front of us we could see smoke filling the inside of the Louer’s car. As the car made a quick stop and Pat came flying out, we found out sparks and smoke had been com-ing from under the dash. Jerry determined some wires had been rubbing. With some simple wrap-ping of electrical tape, the problem seemed to be solved & we were again on our way.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be their only problem. The 57 decided to give them a hard time. The damper pulley separated and the car overheated. The group of 4 or 5 expert home mechanics thought they had devised a temporary solution. It was not to be. Finally, the 57 gave up, and a flat-bed truck had to be called. We were 24 miles from Ozona, the” biggest little town in the world.”

Most of us went on to Ozona, to try to find parts & help. Luck was with us again. After several phone calls, a repair shop was found who had a worker, Juan, who could weld, if we could get a hold of him. (The shop had to close early for a prior commitment.) Long story short Juan was found, car was flatbeded to town and he went to work. An hour later, the car was welded and ready to go again. But the best part of the story was that Juan, who did an excellent job, only asked for $20 and said it was just a pleasure to be able to work on the 57!

Despite it all, somehow, we all made it to the last night out and the convention. The Louers won, at the last night out reception, the Blow Out award for having the worst luck on this year’s road tours.

On The Road to San Antonio

By Darold Shirwo

It's July 5, 2017 and the day is bright, clear and warm and, as usual, our group (led by the infamous tour guides Jerry and Pat Louer in their beautiful white/silver '57) is meeting at Krispy Kreme to head off to San Antonio early Wednesday morning: 3 Corvettes and an SUV.

We hit the road and we are on the way at 70 mph and cruising. We get to about Banning and we meet up with another of our crew from Northern California, Jeanne & Mike, in a bright yellow Corvette.

Our first real stop is in Quartzite for lunch and when we get off the freeway at exit 17 (it is 119 out) the Az road people are tarring the bridge - hot and sticky.

After lunch, we head off to Tucson where we will spend our first night at Hampton Inn (Jerry picked Hamptons because of the rates and the great accommodations). We stopped for gas in Tonopah, Az., and at the pump Don Troyer's water pump starts leaking, (it was 116o outside) Fortunately there was a car guy there and he referred us to an O'Reilly about 2 miles away and Don and I went over and got a small block pump.

The rest of the crew (except Don, Carol and me), headed off to Tucson while Don jumped into the really hot engine compartment and changed the pump.

When we eventually got to Tucson we met up with Barbara and Ed Vignone, John and Bev Legate and Gary and Karen Mion, from AZ (110o- do you get the message?). It was so hot that Pat Louer’s shoe came apart because of the heat coming through the ‘57’s floor. We had a late dinner and a good night’s rest.

The next morning after a great Hampton breakfast we took off for Las Cruces at our usual cruising 70 mph and as usual lunch and gas stops along the way.

Arriving in Las Cruces (still hot) we settled in and looked for a dinner place; some of the group headed to the tourist area and walked around there and the rest of us went to a winery for another nice dinner and wine. If anyone is interested, Las Cruces has had a revitalization and they have one great tourist spot.

Another early day with a great Hampton breakfast and off to a tour stop (a Jerry L delight) - none other than Al Knoch's.

When we pulled up to this huge building, we were able to find our way into the Al Knoch antique parlor (2 floors of row after row after row of antiques). Searching around we ended up in the back where the interiors are done. Al's facility is amazing in that he manufac-tures all the interior stuff that we need, dream about, languish over and save pennies for. None of us, nor you, could ever comprehend how much work goes into putting out interior products that meet our NCRS satisfactions.

The pictures we took of the plant do not do it justice because you must be there to watch them sew, imprint, heat, glue, press and do all the manufacturing processes that are neces-sary to create the perfect door panels, seat covers, headlin-ers, etc. that we need in our restorations. Al not only does Corvette stuff but Camaro, Chevelle and Chrysler/Dodge inte-riors, and of course, Al had libations for us.

Page 11: See Page 6 for the Story & Photosstroke. With the help of Connie, because she could hardly stand up, Pat managed to climb into the SUV where she rode to the hotel. A scary event for

Web Site: http://www.ncrs.org/scc/ 11 Email address: [email protected]

After spending a couple of fantastic hours in the an-tique shop and the interior plant we headed off for lunch and our next stop in Fort Stockton.

Arriving in Fort Stockton (still hot) we tried to decide on dinner and the girls suggested that we have a party in celebration of Don Troyer's birthday and Carol Troy-er hosted a pizza party for everyone. The hotel, which had a bar, opened for our pizza party and we partied.

The next day we fired up our cars and headed off to Kerrville for the last night out. Little did we know that another disaster awaited us.

In the middle of nowhere Jerry & Pat’s '57 broke down; the fan pulley on the harmonic balancer separated and

Gary Mion and Jerry were upside, downside, underside the car trying to fix the pulley so we could get to the next town, Ozona, which was about 23 miles away - no luck.

We called information and found a welding shop in Ozona and spoke to the owner who understood the problem (he is a Mustang guy) but it was about 11 AM and he was leaving at 12PM to go to a wedding and would not be there.

He told us his worker (Juan) could come by if we got there and he would look at the problem, Jerry got a flatbed and the '57 made it to town.

Juan (a youngster - about 20) looked at the problem and the '57 got jacked up in the air and he took his file and torch to the pulley and after about an hour he had fixed the pulley that had separated.. You ask how much did this misadventure cost; Juan wanted $20. (Jerry gave him what it was worth to him).

On the road, again with no issues with the newly fixed pulley and smooth sailing into Kerrville to YO Ranch and the Last Night Out.

Jerry & Pat earned one award they didn’t expect and did-n’t really want: The “Blow Out Award”, given to the driver of the Corvette having the most difficulty on the Road Tour.

We all got registered and had a well-deserved reception with the Louer's getting the hard luck award.

The next day it was into San Antonio for the start of this year’s National meet. Our group received many awards and, eventually, everyone arrived safely home.

Pinch Me - did I dream this?

I had been pleading to have a gathering at our LeGate home

in Ramona. Convincing our SCC Board we don't live at the

BORDER was quite a task. Maybe I wore them down be-

cause my dream came true. Approval to host a Tech Ses-

sion, Judging School and a Museum Tour. Fantastic! We

arranged donuts and coffee and a pizza lunch, rental tables

and chairs, and got our Tech Session host Michael Mermel-

stein of Americas Finest Corvettes onboard and we were set.

Did I hear you ask, "What could possibly go wrong?" OMG

no one told CAL TRANS we were having a gathering at the

LeGate home. All 23 members traveling into Ramona

came to a screeching HALT one mile from our Main Street

due to an emergency road closure. I don't care if a boulder

came down. Practically all our 23 members had to go back

either thru Escondido to Hwy 15 and come back to Ramona

thru Poway or take a mountain road into Ramona.

We were a little late getting started at Americas Finest Cor-

vette but Michael rolled with everything thrown at him.

Michael Mermelstein is a walking wealth of knowledge and

he is the largest advertiser in the NCRS Driveline. Give Mi-

chael Mermelstein a call if you have any questions.

The LeGate Home and the Judging School followed the Tech

Session. I covered some judging field etiquettes with help

from our audience. John talked about his restoration pro-

ject and the NCRS paint guidelines on my '72. I can't believe

this has been a project for over ten years. We then went

outside to discuss the pin striping on Jack Knish's '69 and the

judging of the pin striping along with the removal of the pin

striping vs. the point deduction.

Our Ramona family-owned restaurant delivered our pizzas

and everyone seemed to enjoy them.

Who knew our little town of Ramona's Rotors Museum is

one of three helicopter museums in the world.

If you are ever in our small town, please check out the Classic

Rotors Museum. 20 members

did and they enjoyed the in-

formative docents walking us

thru the museum.

Despite the obstacles encoun-

tered at the beginning, it turned

out to be a successful Corvette

event.
