SEE AN OPPORTUNITY
Inspired by Vincentian compassion and zeal for service, we’re on a mission to educate and empower graduates to create positive change. It starts on campus, and the service work of students and faculty is felt locally, nationally and internationally. Last year, our students logged 96,833 service hours in 125 city agencies and 11 sites on four continents.
ST. JOHN’S BREAD AND LIFE Founded in 1982 as a ministry of the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentian Fathers at St. John the Baptist Parish, Bread and Life is a not-for-profit corporation and key partner to students for community-based research, service learning and understanding poverty. The program serves over 1,000 meals daily and offers a range of essential social services.
IN THE COMMUNITY From serving lunch in soup kitchens and sprucing up public parks to organizing activities for disadvantaged children and visiting the elderly, we integrate service with classroom learning. You’re not just studying issues. You are practicing the skills you’ll use to affect transformative change.
AROUND THE WORLD Because of the diverse and global nature of our university, we consider the world our community, and we serve it in some important ways. Our GLOBE Microloan Program, a student-managed business initiative, oversees a loan program that supports entrepreneurs in developing countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Vietnam. GLOBE students manage all aspects of the program, including marketing, processing, fund tracking and fundraising.
TAYLOR GERMAN is on a Vincentian mission. “The first time I went on a Midnight Run delivering food to the homeless, the meaning of service really hit me.” Now, chair of the Haraya-Pan African Students’ Coalition and President’s Society member, she sees service everywhere. Plus, “St. John’s fit,” she says. “I have specific plans for the future.”
I don’t think I realized how much St. John’s was about serving people until I got here and became involved in all the service opportunities. Now, I get it.” - TAYLOR GERMAN
When Taylor says she has specific plans for the future, she isn’t kidding. “Both of my grandfathers had amputated legs,” she explains. “I hope to open my own firm that makes affordable prostheses. I know the hardship.”
Ultimately, she plans to return to the Washington, DC, area. “I want to work at the National Institutes of Health first,” she says. “I’ll get my professional engineering licenses and go from there.”
And when it comes to service, Taylor definitely sees Red. “I’m passionate about helping children, particularly minority children.” As a member of the Haraya-Pan African Students’ Coalition, a service organization on campus, she founded Project Hype, a mentorship program for boys at the Ronald McNair School in Queens. “You forget that people struggle everywhere you go,” she says.
“
“St. John’s teaches that ethical conduct and professionalism are equally important. Every person matters. Every individual is important,” Bauch says. We’re not only connected, but we emphasize the importance of workplace and real-world ethics.
“Every student takes philosophy and theology classes,” he explains. “Once, I was asked, ‘How will you bring your values to the workplace?’” He answered that question during a trip to Belize City, where he and his classmates built a community playground and taught local children financial literacy. “I think St. John’s has given me a more ethical perspective on business.”
SCHOLARS FOR SERVICE How do you describe our Ozanam Scholars? Committed, passionate and motivated come to mind. Rooted in research, service and global citizenship, this program is designed for students who want to combine learning and service to actively address social justice issues. Ozanam Scholars minor in social justice and complete a program-specific independent-study course in their junior year and a senior capstone project. The Ozanam Scholars Program is heavily supplemented with solutions-based research, travel and service so that you graduate ready to effect positive change.
VINCENTIAN MISSION Established to promote our mission to address global poverty and social injustice, our new Vincentian Institute for Social Action (VISA) provides a platform for students and faculty to identify and support relevant projects. VISA teams are comprised of St. John’s Community Partnerships, Academic Service-Learning, the Ozanam Scholars Program and the Faculty Research Consortium. In the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, students enhance their studies with skill-building experiences in the community, and faculty members pursue research at local agencies and serve as research mentors to participating students.
HEROES OF FAITH A monthly lecture series on the Queens campus, Heroes of Our Faith, highlights the lives of ordinary men and women who lived extraordinary lives. Lectures are often inspired by the saints and feature discussions of ways our community can be extraordinary on and off campus.
LIVES OF SERVICE We have a long history of strong academic programs in service fields, including nursing, education and
healthcare, and we are committed to integrating service into every aspect of the St. John’s experience. Our Vincentian compassion helps lay the underpinnings for careers such as healthcare and nursing, nonprofit corporate management, teaching and research that actively address social justice.
PROMOTING GLOBAL SOLIDARITY St. John’s University and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are currently collaborating on a new venture called Scholars in Global Solidarity. This program fosters the exchange of skills and knowledge between scholars working in Catholic higher education and technical experts leading humanitarian work overseas.
UNIVERSITY SERVICE DAY Each year, our community celebrates the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul during the annual University Service Day. The most recent University Service Day drew more than 1,600 students, faculty and administrators for a day of fundraising and volunteering. From participating in a “Dribble for the Cure” event and serving the hungry in soup kitchens to visiting residents at nursing homes and more, University Service Day fosters strong bonds with local and international outreach organizations that extend well beyond a one-day experience.
MIDNIGHT RUNS Some might call it guerilla service; we call it Midnight Runs. It’s a relatively new tradition here, but we think it’s pretty special. During Midnight Runs, St. John’s participants gather to make sandwiches and meals and then drive them into Manhattan to distribute them to the homeless and sheltered. It helps satisfy the hunger in all of us.
We are one of only 110 American colleges and universities admitted, with distinction, to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
ANDREW BAUCH, a native of Rochester, NY, transferred to St. John’s at the beginning of his junior year. Now, as a graduate student in an accelerated five-year accounting master’s program, he says he “can’t imagine the difficulty people outside of town face making connections. Recruiters are on this campus all the time.”

VINCENT NABAVI and his twin sister, Eva Marie, attend the St. John’s campus on their native Staten Island. Vincent is in the five-year accelerated BA/MA program in English Literature and will graduate with minors in social justice and adolescence education. “Staten Island has the same colleges and connections,” he says, “just smaller classes.” On extended Discover trips, Ozanam-sponsored projects and Plunges, he says, “you are immersed in service. Everybody here has a zeal for the mission.”
EVA MARIE NABAVI, speech language pathology major, values the St. John’s approach to a global education. “I think it is so important for undergraduates to have experiences to really grow,” she says. “In my sophomore year, I already feel my education going to another level.” For example, she’s already traveled and served in Europe. In Puerto Rico, she and her team “performed more than 80 hours of service at boys and girls clubs and with the elderly and hospice patients,” she explains. “These are irreplaceable experiences.”
“We stayed at St. John’s Paris campus just a couple of blocks from the Eiffel Tower. We learned about St. Vincent de Paul walking the streets of the quarters he served. We did Midnight Runs delivering food to street people—providing immediate relief to those who need it most. We were immersed in the Vincentian mission.” - EVA MARIE NABAVI

LIVING ON CAMPUS One of the pleasant surprises people find when visiting our Queens and Staten Island campuses is that our safe, beautiful campuses combine the energy of this great metropolitan area with a classic college experience. “Being in the city and of the city and understanding professionally how to reach more people, understanding how the city works, these things help,” says Weiss. “On campus, I’ve been part of the New York area InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. It is such a great club for spiritual growth and social justice
action. We recently raised $2,000 to fight human trafficking in Asia.” Living on campus is the best way to experience this combination of tight-knit community and fast-paced city for yourself.
CHOICES AND CONNECTIONS Living on campus is a big part of St. John’s classic college experience. Not only will you meet new friends, but you’ll have easy, immediate and almost constant access to residence-hall and campus activities, not to mention leadership opportunities. Need more incentive? You’ll live on a beautiful campus with a short walk to class, the
JONATHAN WEISS looked “only in the New York area” when he applied to schools from his hometown of Flanders, NJ. St. John’s offered substantial scholarship and grant support, but the choice came down to shared values. “St. John’s was the one,” he says. In addition to his work with the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Jonathan makes the most of a bustling campus culture. He is a student ambassador, a recent competitor in the National Student Advertising Competition, and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. Jonathan sees Red, and it’s all good. “Here,” he says, “honor societies are actually academically oriented.”
