BRUCE

Dear students,

How are you all? What a beautiful week we’re having! Filled with sunshine and blue

skies. Tenerife constantly surprises me that it can always be so lovely, regardless of

the time of year. I hope you’ve managed to get outside and enjoy yourselves, and that

you’re all very excited about phase 2 - I know I am!

Anyway, this week, I thought we could talk in our classes about different

accents and ways of speaking, and how they affect our real lives. What’s more, we

have a few guest videos from the other assistants in the college! I hope you enjoy!

The Disappearing Accent of North Carolina

We’ll start off with this short video about an old, rural accent of America. If it’s too

difficult to understand what they’re saying, press the “cc” button to turn on subtitles!

The video explains how the accent has special slang and strange pronunciation. After

you watch this video, ask yourself: do you think this accent would affect the lives of

these people? Can you imagine a speaker doing well at an interview? Do you think

young people will continue speaking this accent? And finally - does it matter?

Why are the Dialects Disappearing?

This video speaks about a number of American accents and people’s opinions about

the fact that they’re disappearing. Many of these people are upset about the situation,

but do you think they’re right about it? Are accents worth saving?

A Video by Mr Joe

And here’s a little surprise - a video by Joe, one of the other assistants in the college!

He talks about the slang, origins and cultural significance of his own dialect - London

English. He speaks about how his accent is closer to “normal” and “proper” English, an

international dialect that is filled with vocabulary from all over the world. Have you

heard this accent before? Do you like it?

A Video by Miss Elena

Page 4: See you this afternoon! DATOS CONEXIÓN ZOOM

In this video, you can see a familiar face - your teacher from the Autumn trimester! In

the video, Elena speaks about a number of slang words used in her region of

Pennsylvania. Do you recognise some of them? I hope so!

A Video by Miss Mystie

Here you can watch another of the assistants in the college explaining about the slang

used in her corner of the world - Chicago, Illinois. This dialect is rich with fun slang, so I

hope you enjoy it!

A Video by yours truly

Finally, a video of my own! In this one I speak about the differences between American

and UK accents. Maybe you can re-watch the videos by the other assistants and see if

you can hear these features of their pronunciation? I hope you can hear them! And

start asking yourself some questions about your own accents when speaking English -

or even Spanish!

Anyway, that’s me! I hope you have an excellent week filled with sunshine and

happiness. See you soon!

All the best,

Bruce
