Pastor Sue’s Newsletter Article

September 2018

How many of you have found yourself saying, “Where did the summer

go?” Back-to-School sales have been going on all month and parents have

been busy getting school supplies and fitting in last minute vacations.

High School sports have started, the Packers are back (hooray!) and the

Badgers will soon be playing at Camp Randall Stadium. Fall is in the air!

September is a kind of a transition month. It can still be hot outside, and

other than Labor Day, there’s no really big holiday. September seems to be

the gateway month to the trinity of the big Fall holidays: Halloween,

Thanksgiving, and Christmas (with our Lutefisk Dinner in there, too).

I find myself both excited and weary at this time of the year. I’m excited

for the start of Sunday School, Confirmation, Bible Studies, Choir, Youth

Group, and all the other activities we have going on here at Christ Luther-

an. And yet, I’m weary just thinking about all the help we need in bringing

the best possible ministries to our congregation and community.

So, yes, you probably can anticipate my next question. “What has God

called you to do here at Christ Lutheran?” It takes a village to raise a child.

It takes a congregation to be the Body of Christ. Every one of us can make

a difference: being a greeter, usher, reader, choir member, teaching Sun-

day School, part of a committee (we have many!). For people who can’t get

out and about, there’s the ever important opportunity to pray for the

people God brings to Christ Lutheran and for all of our ministries. Prayer

brings us together and holds us together as God’s people.

So, please spend time with God and ask God to help you know how you

can help the ministries of Christ Lutheran. If God calls you to a ministry,

God will give you everything you need to carry it out. We need you. God

needs you. Whatever your talent or passion is, we have a place for you in

the ministries of Christ Lutheran.

For as in one body we have many members,

and not all the members have the same

function, so we, who are many, are one

body in Christ, and individually we are

members one of another. (Romans 12:4-5)

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Sue Beadle

Grace Meals Dear Friend in Christ,

Thank you for your generous support. Because of YOU the deficit we

experienced earlier this year has been covered and we are happy to announce

that there is a balance to provide for the cost of CLC's participation in the

Grace Meal's Mission through December 2018.

With your support we shall continue our participation in this needed

mission into 2019.

The appreciation and thank you's from these men is

something that we all can be proud of. Please continue

to keep these men in your prayers as they deal with

their personal struggles.

Thank you!! August 31 ends another successful

year of feeding children in our

community. We would like to thank

you for your generous donations of

food and cash to Norski Nibbles and

thank the volunteers for their time in

distributing the lunches.

With your support, we were able to distribute almost 4,000 lunches

this summer. We look forward to your continued support in the

coming years. You truly help make a difference in the lives of many

of your neighbors.

LET’S HAVE A BAZAAR!! It’s time for Bazaar 2018!

For new members, the Christ Lutheran Church Women hold a Bake Sale and Raffle in

the Friendship Room in conjunction with the Lutefisk Dinner. Our members bake/

make a variety of yummy treats for the Bake Sale, such as traditional Norwegian

treats, brownies, cookies, bars, pastries, breads and canned items, such as jams,

jellies, horseradish, relishes, beet pickles, etc.

Still other members with different skills and talents create

items for the raffle portion of the Bazaar. The sky is the limit!

Examples of items raffled in past years are paintings,

carvings, table runners, floral arrangements, wood working,

homemade cards, quilts and jewelry, just to name a few.

Other members have opted to donate gift cards for movies,

food or gasoline.

Money generated from the Bazaar has been used for a wide

variety of things throughout the years. Some has stayed here

at CLC for needs within our congregation. Some has been

distributed to organizations close to home and worldwide,

such as DANN, Salvation Army, Lutheran World Relief and

women’s jail chaplaincy, to name a few. Last year our profit

stayed here at CLC.

So start thinking about your talent and what you can contribute. Any questions can

be directed to Vicki Sobczak, Bazaar Chair, at 846-2920 or email:

Christ Lutheran Church is excited to

participate in the Koats for Kids 2018 program!

This year’s collection drive will be held Sunday,

September 2nd

– Monday, October 1st

. If you have

any gently-used winter coats, non-leather hats,

scarves and mittens (pinned in pairs please) that

you would like to donate, there will be a box in

the Friendship Room.

Klinke Cleaners will clean all items, then hand them off to the Community Action Coa-

lition for distribution in late October. All sizes are in demand, but there is a particular

need for infant and toddler sizes, as well as larger teen sizes (12-22) and larger adult

sizes (L-3XL).

Please consider going through your closets to check for coats you no

longer use and can donate to area residents who are in need.

Let’s Make Pillowcases The Social Ministries Committee invites you to join us on Sunday,

October 7, 2018, to make pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. The

pillowcases will go to UW Children’s Hospital to be given to children

battling cancer. We will begin after second service, 11:30ish, with lunch and then

we’ll fire up the sewing machines! You do not need to know how to sew to help.

There will be cutting, pinning and ironing to do in addition to the sewing. If you

would like to donate material the main pillowcase takes 3/4 yard and the border fab-

ric takes 1/3 yard. The material has to be 100% cotton and a print suitable for chil-

dren including holiday, Packer and Badger material.

There will be a bin in the Friendship Room for you to

leave your material. Or if you would like to donate

money for the project, please leave it with the office

staff. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board by

the Friendship Room where you can sign up to help.

Let’s work together to make this a fun event while ac-

complishing our goal of brightening a child’s day with

a pillowcase.

Any question, call Pam Hamele at 846-2553.

Social Ministries The Social Ministries Committee would like to ask for your help in

gathering soap for Lutheran World Relief. LWR accepts new bars of

any brand soap, in their original wrapping. All bar sizes are

accepted; however, bath-size bars are highly preferred. These bars of

soap will give families around the world an essential, as well as a

reminder that they are not alone. There will be a box in the

Friendship Room until October 10th where you can donate the soap.

Thank you!!

Blessings and Gratitude

First, we give ourselves: Giving in Gratitude.

The gospel of John 3:1-17, brings us an encounter between Jesus and a man

by the name of Nicodemus. In this story, Jesus provides a blessing and

promise that is the heart of the gospel. In response to a conversation con-

cerning how one might enter the kingdom of God, Jesus says, “For God so

loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in

him may not perish but have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son in-

to the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved

through him.”

At the heart of our lives as Christians, is the blessing and promise of God’s

grace and life. Our life as a disciple and steward are in response to this

amazing free gift that God brings to us in Jesus Christ. Gratitude is the

acknowledgement of God’s abundant gifting and the starting point for how

we respond as God’s people living each day in God’s promise and blessing.

Gratitude initiates a response of joy and thanksgiving for all that God does

for us in Jesus Christ.

God calls us to help those in need, to provide for His church, His people. We

share in the harvest that God provides us, through our time and many tal-

ents. We help others in their time of need. He gives us a voice to comfort one

another, to share in their joy, to share in their grief, to thank God for the

many blessings he provides. We give for Him with a heart of

gratitude. Our gifts, whatever the size, impact so many – more than we’ll ev-

er know.

I ask for your voice – to share with others on how God provides for you and

your purpose for being a follower of Jesus and member of Christ Lutheran.

Prayerfully consider how you can share your voice and your expression of

thanks.

Eternal God our creator, in you we live and

move our being. Look upon us, your chil-

dren, the work of your hands to provide for

our church; give us strength to help those

in need and courage to speak to others

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Capital Campaign

Thanks to the donations you have generously pledged to the Capital Campaign, we have been

able to make significant progress with some areas of importance at Christ Lutheran.

We have paid down on our debt with one lump sum payment of $25,000 and plan to do this

again before year-end. We are continuing to make payments at our regular monthly rate, so

our debt will be significantly reduced at the end of the term.

We’ve made two $5,000 payments toward our pledge to the Synod. The Synod relies on the

churches of the ELCA to contribute to stewardship just as we do in our own congregation. Our

finances prohibited us from making a pledge last year, so we are pleased to be able to pledge

and participate again this year.

With some stock that was donated to the church, we were able to open an account with Edward

Jones and have invested $75,000 in short term CDs. The interest rates are higher and will

earn additional interest for us. Funding comes from Capital Campaign and Memorial Funds.

Our thanks to Cathey LaHaye and the Finance Committee for their diligence and hard work

with managing our finances.

As you’ve all noticed, we have installed new glass doors at the East entrance from Main Street.

This brightens the entry into the church, and looks open and welcoming from the street. The

doors were paid in full upon installation with money donated to Memorial funds and ear-

marked for the new doors.

To ensure safety for everyone in the building and the building itself, we are installing addi-

tional card readers in the office area, and implementing the ability to lock down all doors from

the office and the usher closet in case of emergency. Installing push bars on all doors ensures

safety for everyone exiting the church if an evacuation were necessary. These enhancements

were funded by the Capital Campaign.

We are currently creating a statement of work to get bids for a new sound system and hearing

loop in the sanctuary. We are assessing our current needs, as well as how to position our-

selves for opportunities in the future.

Our thanks to Bob Henze, Travis Little and the Property

Committee for leading these efforts to address safety

concerns and preserve the beauty of this church.

As we approach the end of our first year of the three

year campaign, we hope what is shared with you here

shows how much has been accomplished with your

donations. We thank you for taking pride in this

beautiful house of worship, and for continuing your

commitment to preserve and maintain it for

generations to come.

God Bless,

Mike Paulson, Congregational President

“Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray”

Proverbs 22:6

As summer comes to a close, it’s time to prepare for Sunday School! We would like for you to

join us in teaching God’s word to our children and sharing Bible stories with them. We will

have a few changes to the program format this year that we hope will engage children more in

their learning. Each week will begin with all ages together for the lesson reading, and then we

will break out into groups for a game or craft activity. We will then join all classes together as

usual in the Sanctuary for music and singing.

We will have Rally Sunday on Sunday, September 9 for registration, but there will be no class

that day. Classes will begin the following week, Sunday, September 16 from 9:15 to

10:15. Pick up by parents will be in the Sanctuary, as usual.

We are in need of teachers. We currently do not have enough staff to support anticipated

enrollment numbers, so please consider sharing your gifts with our leaders of tomorrow and

contact Deb Weier at 335-7063 or the church office if you are able to assist!

Thank you!
