AIM: How does photosynthesis occur?

OBJ: Given notes, 3 experiments and activity sheet SWBAT explain the process of photosynthesis in plants with 70% accuracy.

DN: Seed Journal (~ 3 minutes);HW check- Photosynthesis & Light Booklet.

College Style Lab Review Results:Elodea CO2 Test, Guess Which Gas, Light & Starch

LAB WRITE-UP & ASTRACT FORM

HW: Complete Photosynthesis in Plants Lab (due Monday). Work on Plant Activity Sheet, Plant Exam Oct 16.

Photosynthesis

For Elodea CO2 Test:

Bromothymol Blue: Yellow indicates CO2 present

For Guess Which Gas?

Baking Soda + Water = CO2 GAS

Liquids – more dense, sinks; Gas – less dense, rises

For Light & Starch (letter E) Test:

Note: iodine ─ dark leaf – starch (LIGHT)

iodine ─ light leaf – NO starch (COVERED)

College Style Lab ReportTitle: Photosynthesis in Plants

Problem: How does photosynthesis occur?

Hypothesis: ???

Materials: ?????

Procedure: Explain 3 experiments, namely

1. Elodea CO2 Test (4 test tubes)

2. Guess Which Gas? (beaker, funnel, test tube)

3. Light & Starch Test (plant, letter “E”)

Results:

1. What did you learn/discover?

(Hint: used Bromothymol Blue for what? Blue color, Yellow color)

(Hint: used Iodine for what? Dark color, Light color)

2. Answer all lab questions.

Abstract Form: complete

Light & Starch Experiment

RESULTS:

Dark part of leaf = light present, starch produced

Light part of leaf (covered) = No light, no starch

CONCLUSION:

Light required for photosynthesis

Light required to produce starch (food)

ABSTRACT FORMState three science concepts that you learned based on this lab:

WRONG STATEMENTS1. I learned about mass and how to calculate mass.2. I learned about volume and how to find volume.3. I learned about density and how to calculate density.

CORRECT STATEMENTS:1. I learned that mass is the amount of matter (atoms) in a substance and it is measured using a balance (unit: grams).

2. I learned that volume is the space an object occupies and for cubic/ rectangular solids we use a ruler where V = LxWxH; for irregular objects (cork, pebble) we use a graduated cylinder (water displacement method) to find volume.

3. I learned that density is the amount of mass divided by the amount of volume; it represents the internal atomic arrangement of atoms in a substance
