In March, we celebrated Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights at Resort Bowl to raise awareness about climate change and to show support for the use of renewable energy. Flip over to page 6.

Recently, as part of the resort’s commitment to the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programme, staff participated in the inaugural NSRCC Planting Day at Changi Golf Course on 22 April, an event which forms a key part of the resort’s participation in the programme - which recognises golf courses around the world that work towards a high degree of environmental quality for people and wildlife.

Catch the staff in action as they plant 800 Scheffl eras and Exoecaria Cochinchinensis on page 9.

Inside these pages, we are featuring our newly opened Sports Lounge. We also went on site to interview owners Eddy and Jasper. Score a hole-in-one with their signature drinks, or catch live football matches complete with a game of darts. More on pages 14-17.

Also, check out our exclusive coverage of the outgoing President’s Appreciation Golf and Dinner event on pages 4 & 5. We wish LG Neo Kian Hong all the best in his future endeavours.

This issue is not complete without the events and promotions. Start planning for your year-end holidays or pick up a new skill. Learn how to bake fruit tarts or kuih tarts in our baking classes.

In pursuit of our happiness, let’s not forget the underprivileged. The resort’s annual Charity Golf is back again this year and we seek to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate. This year’s benefi ciaries are Apex Harmony Lodge, Geylang East Home for the Aged, Metta Welfare Association, SAF Benevolent Fund, SAF Care Fund and the Society for the Aged Sick.

As the months get warmer, remember to drink enough fl uid to stay hydrated, especially if you are outdoors in the mid-day sun.

President’s Appreciation Golf & Dinner

seen&heard

A surprise birthday cake!

O n 20 March, management staff,

members of the General Committee, various sub-committees and invited guests gathered for outgoing President, LG Neo Kian Hong’s Appreciation Golf and Dinner.

They caught up with and conveyed their well wishes to LG Neo, as he embarks on his new career in the civil service.

The event kicked off with a lunch reception, followed by the 18-hole golf game. Participants were subsequently invited to the opening of the brand new Sports Lounge and treated to aperitif before dinner.

As part of his farewell tribute, a video montage capturing key events and milestones during LG Neo’s three - year tenure as club president certainly brought back nostalgia and good memories.

Comr Eric Yap presented him with a memento and appreciation letters from the Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen and Permanent Secretary of Defence, Mr Chiang Chie Foo, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to NSRCC.

LG Neo who hosted the event, expressed his appreciation to the committees and management for their tireless efforts and dedication in providing a high level of service to members and managing the resort.

Concurrently, it was also former General Manager, Dennis Ng’s farewell. He was presented with a token of appreciation from LG Neo for his service. We wish LG Neo Kian Hong and Dennis Ng all the best in their endeavours.

Lights Go off for Earth HourR esort Bowl once again participated in Earth Hour

celebration on 23 March, switching off non-essential lights for an hour to create awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

The event started in 2011 and has been an annual event ever since.

During the 60 minutes lights out, the bowling lanes, pillar and service counter lights were switched off. Zealous participants waved their coloured light sticks and bracelets creating a mini light show.

Bowlers, Mr Goh and his children were excited about the event, while another participant, Swee Ling agreed that the event was a fantastic way to create awareness and reminded her to conserve energy.

Outside the bowling centre, the resort’s external perimeter, car park lights were also switched off. The newly opened Sports Lounge also joined in the festivities to switch off their lights entirely for the hour.

Share with us ideas on how you would like us to celebrate Earth Hour 2014, write in to us at [email protected]

Let us explore ways to on-going all year efforts to help Mother Earth instead of just an hour every year.

NSRCC’s New Singing Talent

KSGC Staff Honoured at SGH Survivor Awards 2013

N SRCC’s mini karaoke contest is

a singing competition contested by aspiring singers drawn from NSRCC’s vocal class intakes.

Eight batches of vocal class p a r t i c i p a n t s came together to compete for the coveted singing title, where the winner is determined by a panel of three judges.

Vocal class participants who were given training on their singing techniques displayed their rediscovered confi dence.

The competition began with an ice-breaker session and a few tips from the instructor as participants warmed up their vocals and practised their chosen song.

Alice was crowned the winner during the fi nals of the singing contest held on 20 March, wowing the judges over with her mellifl uous tone and diction.

Congratulations and well done!

R emember our coverage on “Our Marshals Save a life” published in the Sept/Oct 2012 issue of RV. One year

on, it was survivor meets rescuers at the recent inaugural Survivor Awards, given by the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to those who helped save cardiac arrest victims.

At the dinner, rescuers Supian and Duran reunited with survivor Mr Gan, a golfer they resuscitated from a cardiac arrest during his golf game at Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course.

“We were very excited to see him after almost one year,” replied Supian and Duran. Both of them were among 79 recipients who were honoured at the ceremony on 8 April.

We convey our well wishes to the trio.

Cake Pop BakingA t the cake pop baking class, participants were taught

how to bake lollipop cakes.

Everyone started by mixing the cake crumbs and the soft dough into balls, placing them on lollipop sticks, dipped into candy coating.

Although it looked simple, baking these cute cake pops required a bit of patience and a little skill. It was an eventful day for the participants who brought home their own creation of sweet-treats.

“I enjoyed shaping the cakes into balls and sharing the cake pops with my family.” Said Tevyn Tan.

NSRCC Goes Green

W ith the strength of 16 staff volunteers, NSRCC achieved a milestone in

supporting the tropical garden initiative by organising its very own inaugural NSRCC Planting Day on 22 April.

It was a team-building exercise for the staff and also served as an outreach and education platform for our Audubon Sanctuary Programme for Golf.

Despite being under the scorching sun, everyone gave their all and completed the tasks.

“It was not as easy as I imagined, therefore I truly admire all the hard work that was done by our colleagues in order to maintain the course and landscape,” shared Ei Kheng, Senior Executive for Membership Services.

Joey, HR Manager said that it had been an enriching and meaningful morning, as the planted area now carries a deeper meaning to her and signifi es the hard work put in by everyone.

A total of 800 plants were planted that morning with help from green specialists who were around to supervise the volunteers.

Thumbs up to everyone who was involved in making this event a success!

Fun FactsPlanting Day is also known as ‘Arbor Day’.The word ‘arbor’ in ‘Arbor Day’ comes from the Latin word

‘tree’. It was originated in the United States in the 1800s

due to the growing concerns of deforestation.Arbor Day goes back to a time when people lived in closer

communion with nature and gave trees the respect due

to them.

The “Mental Game of Golf”

By Bob Larensen,Teaching Professional with Phil Brew Golf Academy since Jan, 2011Member, PGA of America since 1998 and Singapore PGA Teaching Professional since 1983Graduate University of Oklahoma 1982Honourable Discharge US Air Force 1977

Golf: A Game for Fun and for Life

M any golfers develop a basic golf swing and spend many hours trying to perfect it but the swing is only a part of the game.

If you really want to enjoy golf, spend an equal amount of time on the short game as you do hitting balls at the driving range. There are bunker, pitching, chipping and putting shots. Each of these types of shots has many variables which can make practising them interesting and fun.

Start with putting and learn to swing the putter. If you can learn to have reasonable aim at the hole and develop good distance control, you will be a good putter. Then learn to swing the clubs to chip the ball. It is good to learn to chip with all of your clubs. Next, we move on to learning to swing the wedges. There are four types of wedges in your bag such as pitching wedge, approach wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge. Try to be creative and practise every shot that you can think of. Play games with your friends while you are practising. Hit long as well as short putts and chips. Hit low shots with those wedges as well as high shots.

Go into the bunker and practise uphill, downhill and side hill lies. Step on

the ball and learn how to hit a plugged ball. Sometimes you can get a fried egg in the bunker. Practise hitting those shots and if you don’t know what a fried egg lie is, look for me and I will show you. As you practise hitting balls, practise shaping shots. Hooks, slices, fades, draws, high and low. Imagine a shot that is most diffi cult on the golf course and see if you can hit it on the range. But mostly remember, keep a good attitude and always remember the fun part!

Stones in Bunker

Stones are, by defi nition, loose impediments.

When a player’s ball is in a hazard, a stone lying in or touching the hazard may not be touched or moved under Rule 13-4c.

However, stones in the bunker may pose a danger to fellow golfers when struck by players during the course of the game.

In view of the above, the following local rule applies to playing golf at NSRCC.

Scenario: A golf ball lands next to a stone and interferes with play

New Local Rule: Stones in the bunkers are movable obstructions
