Our Lady of Alta Grace Novena BeganThursday, January 12th

Feast Day January 21st. Novenas begin at 7:30 p.m.

A rich Spanish colonist was in the habit of going to the city of Santo Domingo for his shopping. One time, his pious daughter Nina, aged 14, asked him to bring her back a portrait of Our Lady of Altagracia (High Grace), the Blessed Virgin Mary who has re-ceived many graces, is still "full of grace" and was prepared for the highest of all graces, that of becom-ing the Mother of God. But the father was forced to return from San Do-mingo empty handed because no one had ever heard of Our Lady of Altagracia. On his way home, he stopped over at an inn in Higuey, and described his problem to an old friend he met there. A third person joined the conversation at that point, and pulled a rolled up canvas out of his bag representing Our Lady of High Grace, a portrait of the Virgin Mary in a Na-tivity scene praying before the Child Jesus, with St Joseph in the background. Full of joy, the father asked to buy it, but the stranger would only give it to him free of charge. By dawn the next morning, the mysterious person was gone, not to be seen again. Nina came to meet her father and discovered the wonderful painting on January 21st. A shrine was built, at the place where the father and daughter met in Higuey. It is the largest Marian shrine in the Dominican Republic, and the Feast of the shrine, on January 21, is a national holiday in Mary's honor. Adapted from the book Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, by Bishop Ramón de la Rosa, Bishop of Altagracia, Dominican Republic, 1977

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as the second century, in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases, soci-ety yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households. From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a “bride price” as compensation for the loss of a skilled house-hold worker. As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs re-mained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kid-napping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of “sacred cake,” initiating her into a new way of life. It’s fasci-nating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s surprises crop-ping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated high-est up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, ex-alted to eternal, heavenly glory.

Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant sur-prise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s fa-miliar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that some-body’s life—not necessarily our own—will be surprised for the better. Copyright © J. Dear Parishioner and Friend,

As we begin the year 2016, I hope your Christmas was a blessed and joyful one. The holiday season can sometimes be a depressing, lonely or sorrowful time of the year. Here at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, all the Priests have been remembering you and your loved ones in their daily prayers and masses. At this time, I would like to invite you to either continue or become a Parish Bulletin Patron. Listing a deceased loved one in our weekly bulletin can be a beautiful tribute to them. You may also place a listing “In Honor of” a patron saint for answered prayers, blessings received or “In Thanksgiving.” If you wish to continue as a Bulletin Patron or become one, please fill out the form below and return it along with payment to the rectory office. Once again this year, the cost remains at seventy-five dollars ($75.00). Please make your check or money order payable to “Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church”. Wish you every good, I remain Yours in Christ,

Fr. Gabriel Mary Community of St. John
