day of week, date and other types of information.

Ambient Temperature Temperature of the atmosphere within the surrounding environment.

Analogue A timepiece with dial, hands and numbers or markers indicating

the 12 hour time span. The standard watch design.

Analogue Quartz The most commonly used term referring to any analogue timepiece that

operates on a battery or on solar power and is regulated by a quartz

crystal.

Automatic A mechanical watch in which the mainspring is wound by the rotation

of the oscillating weight.

Auto Repeat Timer A feature that allows for continuous operation of a countdown timer.

If the timer function is set at one hour and started, it will count down

to zero, beep with a warning signal and immediately return to the preset

time and start the countdown again. This cycle would continue until

the stop button is pushed.

Back Light A light used to highlight the display on digital watches to enable

the display to be read at night.

Band An attachment fi tted to the watch case to allow it to be worn on the

wrist.

Batons (Markers) The applied strokes on a watch dial to highlight hours.

Bezel The outer metal ring surrounding the glass, which may be purely

decorative or used in sports or diver’s models, where the numerical

bezel rotates to show elapsed time as well as other functions.

Bezel – Compass Bezel Direct the hour hand towards the sun. Turn the bezel, so that the “S”

(South) mark is positioned midway between the hour hand and 12 o’clock

position. The bezel indicates the approximate direction.

Bezel – Rotating Bezel Switch For those series, bezel performs as a switch to perform various modes

of the watch. Each time when the bezel is turned, mode changes and

the watch shows different display. The selected mode is always indicated

at 12 o’clock position.

Bezel – Rotating Rotate the bezel so that mark (or “60”) is where the minute elapsed

time bezel hand is pointing. You can tell how many minutes have

elapsed by reading the minute mark on the bezel.

Glossary Of Terms

Diver’s Watches Diver’s watches are designed and manufactured especially for divers

whose lives depend on the reliability of their watch in the water. SEIKO

diver’s watches meet ISO (International Standardisation Organisation)

regulations. Diver’s watches must meet various standards regarding

water resistance, pressure resistance, readability in the water, time

presetting function (rotated elapsed time bezel), anti-magnetic ability,

anti-shock, rust resistance in salt water, manageability in the water,

ability to withstand sudden temperature change, etc. SEIKO diver’s

watches also have features such as: Rotating bezel that will only rotate

counter clockwise. This is so in case rotated accidentally the bezel will

not show an extended diving duration. For accurate setting, bezel

also has a one-minute interval click. Inscribed on the case back is the

battery replacement month to prevent the watch from stopping during

diving. Straps feature extra large buckles for easy fastening and longer

length to allow it to be worn over diving suit. Bezel is set higher than

the surface of the crystal to help protect it. Large luminous hands

and markers are designed for clear readability. Please refer to the

Instruction booklet for “Periodical Check”, “Pre-Diving Check”, and

“Battery Change Instructions”.

Dual Time Capability of a watch to display time in two different time zones.

Electro A bright blue-green panel lit by current from the battery at the press

of a button, which then stays illuminated for 3 seconds. This type of dial

illumination provides for easy reading of the time and other data in the

dark or under water.

Finish The surface texture of cases and bands, such as highly polished,

satin, metal injection moulding, etc.

Frequency The measurement of oscillations per second. The oscillation rate

of the quartz crystal depends on the shape and the way it’s cut.

Frost Finish A fi nish unique to SEIKO using stainless steel. A highly polished

case/bracelet is hit at high pressure with specially selected ceramic

beads, creating the rough frost effect. Cut frost fi nish is made by

stamping the initial shape into the case/bracelet then using the above

process to create the frost fi nish effect.

Gasket A rubber or plastic ring used in the case back, crown, push button

and/or with the crystal that, when properly fi tted and compressed,

seals the watch against penetration of dust, moisture and water.

TERM DEFINITION

Page 50: Seiko Watch Catalogue 2007 & 2008 With Manual for All Clock

Generating Rotor A permanent rotating magnet capable of achieving an instantaneous

speed equivalent to 100,000 revolutions per minute.

Glass A general term used to describe mineral glass, acrylic resin or sapphire

watch glasses.

Glass – Acrylic A plastic glass that is easier than Hardlex crystal to scratch, and refl ects

more light. Shallow scratches can be buffed out easily.

Glass – Hardlex A type of mineral glass exclusive to SEIKO that is heat treated

to make it extremely hard wearing and scratch resistant.

Glass – Mineral A synthetic mineral crystal glass that is highly resistant to knocks

and scratches.

Glass – Sapphire A glass made from synthetic sapphire that is highly resistant to

scratching and second only in hardness to diamond.

Glass – Sapphlex A special glass created by SEIKO incorporating a layer of Sapphire

crystal bonded to Hardlex. It provides a brilliant watch glass with a

highly scratch resistant surface at a reasonable cost.

Hard Coating Hard Coating also referred to as Carbonised Titanium is composed of

titanium, carbon and nitrogen. These substances are placed in a special

device which vaporizes and ionizes the substance. The highly energized

particles then adhere to the material being plated, normally stainless

steel, to form a hard layer of coating. After this process, the colour

changes to a black or dark grey colour.

Hourly Time Signal Single beep/chime that rings on the hour, every hour when it is

engaged.

Hyper Capacitor A small high volume condenser capable of storing electrical current.

Integrated Circuit (IC) A miniature electronic circuit contained within a silicon chip. In a watch

it converts the regular oscillations of the quartz into timekeeping units,

which are then passed on to the hands of an analogue watch, through

the step motor to the display panel of a digital watch.

KineticTM Based on revolutionary technology, SEIKO KineticTM watches run entirely

on self-generated energy from the natural movement of your wrist,

which is converted into electricity to power the watch – it requires no

battery. Accurate to approximately 20 seconds +/- per month. Kinetic is

a Greek word for movement. See page 79 for more details.

KineticTM – Instant Start A function of some SEIKO KineticTM models whereby the Start Function

electrical charge bypasses the large volume capacitor and sends a

signal to the control capacitor to start the watch.

KineticTM– Power Reserve Indicator A device on some SEIKO KineticTM Watches, when the Power Reserve

button is pushed it advances the second hand to indicate the stored

reserve in the capacitor.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) The type of display used in digital watches. Shows dark digits

on light-coloured background.

hands that, after brief exposure to light, glows brightly in darkened

areas for hours longer than conventional luminous or fl uorescent

paints.

Luminous Self-illuminating paint used on watch hands and hour markers

so that time can be read in the dark.

Metal Injection Unique method of manufacturing steel cases and bracelets. Metal is

heated to a very high temperature and injected into a mould to create

uniquely formed shapes.

Micron A measurement of thickness usually related to metal plating, equivalent

to one millionth of a metre.

Mode The mode switch or button of a watch that controls or selects

the function to be used.

TERM DEFINITION

51

Page 52: Seiko Watch Catalogue 2007 & 2008 With Manual for All Clock

Module A term used to describe the complete timekeeping and display unit

in a digital watch.

Movement/Calibre/Module The internal components of a watch.

Oscillator A counter weight used to generate power in a KineticTM

or Mechanical watch.

Phenol Resin An activated charcoal fi bre used in a capacitor for the storage of

electricity.

Power Cell In watches, a small button or coin-sized metal container with metal salts

and chemicals inside which react with each other to generate a voltage.

This furnishes the electrical power to run the watch, also known as a

battery.

Pressure Test A method of testing the water resistance of watch cases

by air/water pressure.

Quartz Movement This movement is powered by a battery that charges a quartz crystal.

The vibrations are counted by an integrated circuit that sends

a once-per-second impulse to a step motor. There, the impulse is

converted to motion using a magnetic principle. The motion is linked

to the gear train, which turns the hands at a constant frequency. Quartz

never needs winding, and is virtually trouble-free.

Rotor A permanent rotating magnet making up one of the pieces

of the step motor.

Samarium Cobalt A powerful magnetic metallic element used for the production of the

rotor.

Seals Rubber or plastic gaskets used to protect watch movements from the

entry of moisture or foreign material into the case.

dropped from a height of one metre onto a hardwood surface.

Solar Watch A quartz analogue or digital watch that uses a solar cell, which converts

light into electrical energy when exposed to a light source. To store the

energy for use there are two types of secondary batteries (containers).

One is the rechargeable battery, the other is the capacitor. SEIKO

watches usually use a capacitor.

Glossary Of Terms

Stainless Steel Alloy consisting of iron, chromium and other metals that make

a product that is highly resistant to rust and ordinary corrosion.

Stator A piece of soft iron which passes through the centre of the coil and

intensifi es the magnetic fi eld. Used in a step motor or generator.

Stem A thin round metal pin or rod attached to the crown that is rotated

to wind mechanical watches, or pulled out and rotated to set the time

or other functions on a non-mechanical watch. It is located inside the

watch movement, and is threaded on its outer, where the crown is

attached.

Step Motor The combination of a coil, rotor and stator used to create movement

through the gear train to the watch hands to form the impulse signal

given out of the Integrated Circuit.

Stop Watch A wrist or pocket watch used specifi cally to record elapsed time.

May not include normal time keeping functions such a hour, minute

and second, although usually does in digital types (see chronograph).

Strap A name given to watch bands made of leather, plastic or fabric.

Tachymeter The tachymeter scale on Seiko watches is the logarithmic scale inscribed

around the bezel or inner ring of a chronograph analogue model. This

scale is primarily used to compute the speed of a vehicle based on its

travel time over a set distance. To use it for this purpose the chronograph

hand is started at a mile (or kilometre) marker. At the next mile (or

kilometre) marker reached, the point on the scale adjacent to the second

hand indicates the speed (in miles per hour, or kilometres per hour) of

travel between those two markers, i.e. over that mile or that kilometre.

A standard tachymeter will only determine speeds greater than 60 miles/

kilometres per hour using this method; slower speeds can be measured

however by decreasing the unit of measurement to say half-miles or half

kilometers, for example. The speed of an object is defi ned by the equation

speed = distance ÷ time. The function performed by a tachymeter is

independent of unit distance (i.e. is not specifi c to miles or kilometres).

A tachymeter can be used to measure speed in knots per hour or meters

per hour, or to measure an industrial production process in units per hour.

A tachymeter is simply a means of converting elapsed time in seconds per

‘x’ to ‘x’ per hour. The scale is generally only accurate for elapsed times

over approximately seven seconds.

TERM DEFINITION

Telemeter The Telemeter roughly indicates the distance from your location to an

object that emits both light and sound. e.g. The distance to the place

where lightning struck, by measuring the time elapsed after you see the

fl ash of lightning until you hear the sound. A fl ash of lightning reaches

you almost immediately, while the sound travels to you at the speed of

0.33 km/second. The telemeter scale is so graduated that the sound

travels at a speed of 1 kilometre in 3 seconds.

Titanium A silver-grey, light, strong metallic element used in alloys such as steel.

Titanium is 70% harder than stainless steel and 40% lighter than stainless

steel. It is also non-allergenic, extremely resistant to salt water and

other forms of corrosion, and able to withstand extreme temperatures.

Water Resistance A watch that is equipped with a case and fi ttings that deter the

penetration of moisture. Watches are water resistant and depending on

the ISO standard the recommended usage varies. Refer to page 8 for

further details.

Water Resistance – Bar A unit of air pressure measured in kilograms per square Bar centimetre.

10 Bar equals 100 metres.

How to start the watch

When using the watch for the fi rst time be sure to charge the Energy

Storage Unit (ESU) suffi ciently by swinging the watch from side to side

before setting the time and other functions.

1. Swing the watch side to side at a rate of twice per second.

2. After the watch is swung for approx. 2 to 3 minutes, and the second

hand begins to move in one-second intervals there is about six hours

of power available. It is not necessary to charge the ESU fully before

you wear the watch. While the watch is on your arm, the Automatic

Power Generator will ensure constant operation.

Notes: 1. To charge the ESU effi ciently, swing the watch from side to side, making and arc of

about 20cm. 2. No additional benefi t is obtained by swinging the watch more quickly or with

greater vigor. 3. When the watch is swung, the oscillating weight in the generating system

rotates to drive the mechanism. As it rotates, it creates a sound: this is not a malfunction.

How to set time

The Seiko Kinetic 5M62 series of watches are basic analogue

and can be set the same as any 2 or 3 hand watch.

1. Pull out the crown to the second click.

2. Turn the crown to set hour and minute hands.

3. Push crown back to normal position.

Notes: 1. When setting the hour hand, check that AM/PM is correctly set. The watch is so

designed that the calendar changes once in 24 hours. Turn the hands past the 12 o’clock

marker to determine whether the watch is set for the AM or PM period. If the calendar

changes, the time is set for the AM period. If the calendar does not change, the time is set

for the PM period. 2. When setting the minute hand, advance it 4 to 5 minutes ahead of the

desired time and then turn it back to the exact time.

Power reserve indicator

By pressing Button A once when the second hand is in 12 position the

watch can indicate how much power is stored in the ESU.

If the second hand advances to the;

1 position the watch has between approximately 1 and 7 days.

2 position the watch has between 7 days and 1 month.

4 position the watch has between 1 and 4 months.

6 position the watch has between 4 and 6 months.

Operating Instructions

How to start the watch

When using the watch for the fi rst time be sure to charge the Energy

Storage Unit (ESU) suffi ciently by swinging the watch from side to side

before setting the time and other functions.

1. Swing the watch side to side at a rate of twice per second.

2. After the watch is swung for approximately 500 times, the second hand

begins to move in 1 second intervals. A further 200 swings will ensure

about 1 day of power available. It is not necessary to charge the ESU

fully before you wear the watch.

While the watch is on your arm, the Automatic Power Generator will

ensure constant operation.

Automatic Power Save Function

If the watch is left untouched for approximately 3 days (or 72 hours), the

hands will automatically stop moving to minimise the electrical energy

consumed. Although the hands are stopped, a built-in Integrated Circuit

continues to compute the time.

Manual Power Save Function

1. The Power Save Function can also be activated manually. If you decide

not to use the watch for an extended period of time, use this function

to further conserve energy.

2. Pull out the crown to the fi rst click and push back into the normal

position within 1 second. The hands will stop but the IC continues to

compute the time

Energy depletion forewarning function

When the second hand starts moving in two-second intervals instead of

the normal one-second interval, the watch will run down in approximately

12 hours. If the Power Save Function has been turned off by swinging the

watch, and the second hand starts to move in two-second intervals, then

the power reserve may have been drained to an extremely low level. In

either case, charge the watch using the procedure above.

How to set time and date

1. The Seiko Kinetic 5J32 series of watches are basic analogue and can be

set the same as any 2 or 3 hand watch.

2. Pull out the crown out to the fi rst click and turn it counter clockwise to

set the previous day’s date.

3. Pull the crown out to second click and turn hands to the desired date.

The watch is designed so the date changes once in 24 hours as the

hands pass the 12 o’clock marker. When the date changes as the hands

pass 12 o’clock, the time is set for the AM period.

4. Turn the hands to set the desired time. When setting the minute hand,

advance it 4 to 5 minutes ahead of the desired time and then turn it

back to the exact time.

5. Push the crown back in completely.

Note: Do not pull the crown out to adjust the date/time until the Time Relay Function is

complete. This will cause time data retained inside the watch to be erased, thus disabling

Time Relay Function.

How to activate the Time Relay Function

Swing the watch from side to side for 2 to 3 seconds. The hour and

minute hands move quickly to indicate the current time computed by

the IC, setting AM and PM properly. The second hand moves quickly to

indicate the current second, and then continues moving

in one-second intervals.

Remarks on using the Time Relay Function

1. When using the watch for the fi rst time, it is necessary to adjust the

time and date as the watch has been set to the time of the area where

the Seiko factory is located.

2. The built in IC computes the time in a 24 hour manner making a

distinction between AM and PM periods. It does not compute the

date, and the Time Relay Function will not adjust the date. If the Power

Save Function has been active for more than one day before the Time

Relay Function is activated, be sure to adjust the date to the current

date.

3. If the Power Save Function has been in operation for several months

before the Time Relay Function is activated, the time indicated by

the hands may include a certain amount of loss or gain that has

accumulated during those months. Adjust the hands as required.

4. If the power reserve decreases to an extremely low level while the

Power Save Function is in operation, the Time Relay Function may not

be activated by swinging the watch. Instead, the second hand starts

moving in two-second intervals. In this case, set the time manually,

and charge the watch referring to the ‘Energy Depletion Forewarning

Function’.

about 1 day of power available. It is not necessary to charge the ESU

fully before you wear the watch. While the watch is on your arm, the

Automatic Power Generator will ensure constant operation.

Note: 1. Wearing the watch continuously for 12 hours will accumulate power to run the watch

for approximately one and a half additional days. As a general guideline, if you wear the watch

everyday for 12 hours over a period of a week, the power to run the watch for approximately

10 days will be additionally secured. If the watch enters the power save mode, this amount of

energy will keep the watch running for approximately one month and a half. 2. No additional

benefi t is obtained by swinging the watch more quickly or with greater vigor. 3. When the

watch is swung, the oscillating weight in the generating system rotates to drive the mechanism.

As it rotates, it creates a sound: this is not a malfunction.

Automatic power save function

In order to conserve the stored electrical energy, the watch automatically

enters Power Save Mode to stop the hands from moving approximately

24 hours after the watch is left untouched. In a case that the fully charged

watch enters the power save mode, the Time Relay Function of the watch

remains operable for approximately 4 years.

Perpetual calendar function

Once set, the calendar automatically adjusts for odd and even months

including February of leap years until the year 2100. While the watch is

in power save mode, the perpetual calendar continues to function (the

calendar continues to properly advance).

Because the calendar is pre-adjusted at the factory, you may only need

to set the time and date. Pull out the crown out to the second click.

The second hand will stop on the spot. Turn the crown to set the time.

Remember to check the 24 hour indicator to correctly set AM or PM. To

set the time accurately, advance the minute hand 4 to 5 minutes ahead of

the correct time, and then turn it back to the exact time.

To adjust the date pull the crown out to the fi rst click. Rotate crown

in either way to adjust to the correct date.

Note: Do not pull the crown out to adjust the date/time until the Time Relay Function is

complete. This will cause the time data retained inside the watch

to be erased, thus disabling the Time Relay Function.

How to do a complete calendar adjustment

Complete calendar adjustment is only necessary if the watch is completely

stopped due to shortage of stored energy. Each calendar item should be

adjusted in sequence of year, month and date.

1. Pull out crown to fi rst click.

2. Rotate crown to advance date and month until the correct year is

displayed. Refer to the Leap Year Chart to determine if the current year

is a leap year or to determine if it is 1, 2 or 3 years past the last leap

year.

3. After setting the watch to the correct year, continue to rotate the crown

to set the correct month and then the correct date.

4. Pull crown out to second click to set the correct time

(see How To Set Time And Date).

5. Push crown back to original position.

Note: The date, month and year indicators work independently from the hands of the watch.

Advancing the hands will not advance the date, month or year.

rotates to drive the mechanism. As it rotates, it creates a sound: this is not a malfunction.

3. Do not pull the crown out to the second click position with the intention of stopping the

second hand just to save energy. By doing so, a large amount of current fl ows through the

built-in IC. Therefore, pulling the crown out to the second click position will not save energy

but, in fact, consume more energy than usual.

Energy depletion forewarning function

When the second hand starts moving in two-second intervals instead of

the normal one-second interval, the watch will run down in approximately

12 hours.

How to set time and date

1. Pull crown out to the fi rst click position (unscrew crown if your watch is

fi tted with this feature).

2. Turn crown counter clockwise until the previous day’s date appears.

3. Pull crown out to second click position.

7) Completing the

Adjustment. The

calendar adjustment is

completed by pushing

the crown back to the

normal position.

Before using the watch

Because the calendar is pre-adjusted at the factory, you only need to

set the time and date and the calendar will automatically update itself.

*Before using the watch, set the time and date.

How to set time and date

1. Pull out the crown out to the second click when the second hand

is at the 12 o’clock position.

2. Turn the crown in either direction to set the time and date.

3. Push the crown back completely when set to desired time.

Follow the procedures below to check the calendar and, if necessary, to

adjust it.

• Do not check and adjust the calendar between 11pm and 1am. If the

calendar is checked and adjusted between these times, the date may

not change properly. In such case, fi rst change the time to any time

outside this period, and then set the date. After that, move the hands

back to the correct time.

• If the crown is pulled out to the second click while the numeral in the

calendar frame is advancing or moving back, the second hand may be

misaligned from the 12 o’clock position (initial position).

• The button and crown operation cannot be made while the numeral in

the calendar frame is advancing or moving back. Press the button or

turn the crown after then numeral stops.

• If the watch is left untouched for more than 2 to 3 minutes while

checking or adjusting the calendar, the watch will resume

normal movement. In such a case, start again from the beginning

of the procedures.

• Do not leave the crown at the fi rst or second click when you use the

watch, as this will shorten the battery life.

Battery life indicator

When the second hand starts moving at two-second intervals instead of

the normal one-second interval, replace the battery with a new one as

soon as possible. Otherwise, the watch will stop operating in a couple

of days. Time accuracy is not affected even if the hands are moving at

two-second intervals. While the second hand is moving at two-second

intervals, the date will not change. This is not a malfunction.
