Seismic pathologyChapter 11Focus11.1 CLASSIFICATION OF DAMAGE TO R/C STRUCTURAL MEMBERS

11.1.1 IntroductionSeismic pathology of R/C buildings is of major importance for the assessment of their structural condition just after a strong earthquake. Therefore, it is necessary that they must be in a position:To focus their attention to the most frequent types of damageTo assess qualitatively the existing hazard for an eventual aftershock collapse from the damage under inspection and, therefore, to prohibit the use of certain buildings until more detailed evaluation or retrofitting actions take placeTo proceed with temporary general or local propping of buildings in case the existing hazard of collapse is evident11.1.2 Damage to columnsDamage due to cyclic flexure and low shear under strong axial compressionDamage due to cyclic shear and low flexure under strong axial compression
