In a PPM environment with minimized talk and heavily edited interviews, technology may offer some solutions. “I wonder how much from a remote airs live and how much gets cut up into small pieces anyway,” says RCA VP/Promotion Keith Gale. “Maybe we can accomplish our goals by providing audio the same way CRS does with the artist taping sessions. Of course, nothing beats the experience of artists trotting around a room and getting to renew those friendships ñ it’s certainly efficient.” On that front, the industry still benefits from the CMA Awards and the annual Vegas pilgrimage. “Not having an official radio remote at CMA Music Festival does not have any bearing on plans for the CMA Awards,” a CMA spokesperson says. “At this point, itís a bit too early for us to talk about plans around the awards, though.” CMA did extend an invitation to every U.S. Country station to send two people to the festival and more than 40 stations accepted. That’s more than double the station attendance at last year’s event, even with the remotes. Some personalities attending this year may be asked to host segments on the daytime stages. And CMAfest.com will host links to station websites that carry

McCoy & Associates, which has been producing off-site remotes for two decades, is on the fence about this year’s festival. “Last year was the first we didn’t do a Music Fest remote in all those years,” owner Sharla McCoy says. “The last five years of research showed me it was getting harder for stations to come up with packages and come in. So I thought, why do I keep beating myself over the head and trying to pull teeth? If it’s hard for them, we’ll just focus on two events a year ñ ACM and CMA awards.” She hadn’t planned on hosting a Music Festival remote in 2012, but may still be swayed. “My phone was going crazy in Las Vegas from stations hitting me up about Music Fest remotes,” she says. “I guess word started getting out that Premiere was not going to do it this year. The energy level and interest level is there. I’m not soliciting at all and people are coming to me, but I’m still not sure where it’s going to land.” For radio, the prospect of a remote-less festival brings mixed feelings. “This was actually a chance for my morning show to get some face-time with the artists since we tie-in afternoons at the CMA and ACM awards broadcasts,” says WGH/Norfolk PD John Shomby. “Overall, though, I don’t believe it’s as crucial as being there around the awards shows. This is more of an event for the fans and, maybe, it’s a good idea that we (radio) take a backseat on this one.” WQDR/Raleigh Station Manager Lisa McKay has plans to cover the event, but isn’t heartbroken. “Candidly, the amount of inventory and special shows we have to run is at the point where it is nearly more cumbersome to do this remote than not,” she admits. “I am sending our new MD Cody Clark to do stage announcements and call-ins. He’ll also video and post pics on Facebook, plus feed us any breaking news or fun off-the-cuff interviews so the festival will have some on-air presence.” Capitol & EMI Nashville SVP/Promotion Steve Hodges calls the situation “unfortunate,” adding, “Any exposure is always a benefit for us and our artists, so when that piece of the pie goes away, there’s definitely a void.”

WKXC/Augusta, GA MD Dallas Reese discusses his most influential songs, albums and concerts:1. Billy Joel’s Glass Houses: Masterful songwriting, energy-soaked performances from a superstar tunesmith. I wore out two copies on vinyl. Cue burned the fire out of them. 2. John Denver’s Greatest Hits: I

used to play my guitar on my porch as a kid and crank this album up on my little turntable with a four-inch speaker while posing as Casey Kasem and introducing the next song.3. Phil Vassar/Just Another Day in Paradise: Phil’s an old friend and when he hit No. 1 with this in 2000 it was a beautiful thing for him after decades of hard work. For me, the song hit home because the words are my life with five kids and a wife. 4. Ronnie Milsap/It Was Almost Like A Song: This is the first song I ever learned on piano. Played it a thousand times in my parents’ living room.5. Glen Campbell/Country Boy: This made me want to be in Tennessee. Glen’s such a smokin’ guitar player and performer. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Radiohead’s Kid A. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Anything by Lady Gaga. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Kenny Chesney’s Greatest Hits. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit’s “Heart On A String.” Jason’s a former member of Athens, GA band The Drive-By Truckers, and he’s got soul. It’s great summertime drivin’ music!

Seismic Shift: Power Gold (continued from page 1) 20 songs by eight acts made this year’s list, an increase from 12 and six last year. We’ve included Sugarland and Little Big Town in the category. Eight artists have four or more songs on the list and it’s the usual suspects. Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith and Keith Urban each placed six songs in the top 100 with Sugarland posting five. Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw each have four. These eight superstars account for 40 of the top 100 gold titles this year.

Momentum’s Rachele Lynae puts an industry spin on the artist interview:What station did you grow up listening to? KMPS/Seattle. Has your radio tour taken you to a part of the country that has blown you away? I went to Las Vegas for the first time! I thought, “Man, I have to come back here with my girlfriends!” I’m not much of a troublemaker, but my parents might disagree.

Do you remember the first time you heard “Party ‘Til The Cows Come Home” on the radio? They did a test on KHGE/Fresno, CA, and I listened to it on the Internet. It was a “kick it or pick it” test. It was really nerve-wracking, but turned out well because everyone picked it. I was blaring it in my room! How do you adjust to all the travel on the radio tour? It helps to have a normal routine, and I workout in the mornings. What’s your go-to food stop? Taco Bell or In-N-Out! What gross truck stop food tempts you? It’s funny. I don’t even like them, but whenever I go into a truck stop, I have to get pork rinds. I’ll have two of them and go, “Oh, this is awful.” But I’ll proceed to eat the rest of them. Have you ever wanted to buy anything from SkyMall? Yes! All the time. It’s very dangerous for me. I’ve always wanted one of their massage chairs and those old record players. What cover song do you never want to play again? That could be a long list! We’ve played “Wagon Wheel” so many times. I don’t think I can do it anymore.

Ten artists have three titles on the list, a group reflecting the emergence of a new layer of consistent hit makers, including Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan Josh Turner and The Zac Brown Band. Other notable newcomers include a pair of songs from Easton Corbin, “Roll With It” and “A Little More Country Than That.” Chris Young debuts with “Gettin’ You Home” and Lady Antebellum’s presence is reflected with “Need You Now” and “I Run To You.” The wild card song winner for 2012 goes to Uncle Kracker, who shows up at No. 38 with “Smile.” On the flip side of that trend are some glaring absences of artist and song mainstays. Garth Brooks had five songs in 2010, two last year and just one this time. Alan Jackson has two songs in ‘12 compared with seven in ‘10. After posting four songs in ‘10, then two last year, Brooks & Dunn are down to one; ditto George Strait. Rascal Flatts is down from four titles last year to only two in ‘12. Then there’s Blake Shelton, with a string of No. 1 songs and a smash TV show, who appears just once, on the Trace Adkins duet “Hillbilly Bone.” Some venerable titles that were bounced this year include Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman,” Toby Keith’s “I Wanna Talk About Me,” Alan Jackson’s “Gone Country” and Tim McGraw’s “I Like It, I Love It,” and “Live like You Were Dying.” McGraw had several titles that, while remaining in the top 100, fell substantially. Earlier we mentioned “Where The Green Grass Grows” falling 9-66. Additionally, “Just To See You Smile” moved 25-56 and “My Next Thirty Years” shifted 19-69. Songs making dramatic increases in rank include George Strait’s “Write This Down” (75-33), Keith Urban’s “Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me” (60-30) and Trace Adkins’ “Ladies Love Country Boys,” which leaped 99-54. Check out the entire Top 100 on page 10. –RJ Curtis
