What makes SELCO special?

SELCO, a social enterprise, was established in 1995 to provide sustainable energyservices to underserved households and businesses. Over the last 15 years, SELCO has successfully served over 100,000 customers, improv-ing their lives and liveli-hoods, through its 23 energy service centers across Karnataka, Kerala and Guja-rat. In this process, we have developed a unique busi-ness model which brings the benefits of clean energy at an affordable price to rural India through financial and technological innovation. SELCO has shown that empowering rural customers can be economically, socially, and environmen-tally sustainable.

We also install solar pow-ered outdoor lighting systems (CFL or LED based) which can be used to illuminate path-ways, roads, gardens, farms, campuses, park-ing lots and check posts.

SELCO’s solar powered home lighting systems are either CFL or LED based and provide clean, reliable light with minimal maintenance. In addition to this, we customize our offerings to include fans, transistors, mobile charg-ing and other household appliances.

We also install solar inverter based lighting systems which acts as a clean and reliable backup to normal grid electricity. The inverter systems can be either stand alone solar or solar-grid hybrid based on site requirements.

SELCO has incubated entrepreneurs who main-tain solar charging stations and deliver charged batteries to street hawkers in the evening. These vendors have now switched from kerosene lamps to solar and this has even increased their income.

SELCO has now diversi-fied into product lines like cookstoves. Our biomass cookstove saves fuel, emits less smoke and cooks faster than traditional chulhas. The cookstove reduces indoor air pollution thereby negating a dangerous health hazard faced by rural India.

We offer both flat plate as well as evacuated tube solar water heaters. These can range from a capacity of 100 Liters per day for domestic use to much larger institutional needs. ABOUT US

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT:

Providing a reliable source of electricity has resulted in a better quality of life. Longer working hours in better quality light has led to higher incomes and better education while lesser dependence on conventional fuels has improved health conditions.

FINANCIAL INNOVATION:

We work closely with rural banks, co-operative societies, NGOs and microfinance institutions, to facilitate financing so that end users can afford our products. It is due to SELCO's pioneering work that many financial institutions have created a separate line of credit for solar systems.

DOOR STEP SERVICE:

SELCO’s dedicated energy service centers ensure prompt service at the customer’s doorstep within 24 hours. We ensure that every customer receives training on proper use of the system. It is this focus on quality service and support that has won us the trust of 100,000+ customers.

EMPHASIS ON RESEARCH

To ensure that our customers do not miss out on the latest technological advances in the field of sustainable energy, we have setup an incubation lab in Ujire, Rural Karnataka. The lab develops, evaluates, tests and monitors cutting edge technology as well as business models in partnership with underserved communities.
