SELECT GOFFS DRAFTFROM SIRE-MAKING FARM
By Daithi Harvey
In just over a decade involved in bloodstock, Mark Gittins and
his family have unearthed two stallions in Lord Shanakill
(Speightstown) and Shalaa (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), and the
owner of Castlefarm Stud brings three foals to Goffs this week,
with two of them having direct family links to the above-
mentioned sires. The pick of the trio, on pedigree anyway, is lot
740. The filly by Invincible Spirit is a full-sister to Shalaa, who
was a dual Group 1 winning 2-year-old in 2015 for John Gosden
and Al Shaqab Racing. The fact the filly is being offered at Goffs
is a policy shift for the husband and wife team of Mark and
Aisling Gittins. Mark said, "Usually we'd send the majority of our
foals to Newmarket but we have a smaller crop to sell this year
so we decided to change tack and test the water in Goffs with a
view to next year, when we will hopefully have up to three
times the number of foals to sell. Goffs have proved that if you
bring a nice a horse there you will get paid for it just the same as
bringing it across the water. Also it's only half an hour down the
road so it's a lot less stressful on the foals than sending them on
a long ferry journey."
Shalaa has his first crop of mares in foal off a i27,500 fee at Al
Shaqab's Haras de Bouquetot in France, and Gittins is looking
forward to offering the seventh foal of his dam Ghurra (War
Chant), who is due to come under the hammer late on
Wednesday evening. "She is developing into a really nice filly
and has thrived throughout her prep, which in my opinion is a
great sign. The majority that we have sold well over the years
who thrived in their prep all went on to be successful
racehorses. She hasn't put a foot wrong and I'm excited about
her prospects in the ring.@
AI'm sure Goffs will have assembled a strong collection of
international buyers and although she is probably more of a foal
for an end user, a lot of traders have been very successful this
year and I'm equally happy to sell to a pinhooker as much as an
owner,@ he added. AHer full-brother was a successful pinhook
and there is no reason this filly couldn't do the same."
Gittins reports the 15-year-old Ghurra to be in fine fettle and is
looking forward to welcoming a son or daughter of Dubawi (Ire)
next spring before she pays a visit to Galileo (Ire). They retained
a filly out of the mare by High Chaparral (Ire) and the now
2-year-old has recently returned from a stint in training with Karl
Burke where, although she didn't run, she showed enough
promise to go back into training as a 3-year-old.
"She only went over to Karl's in August and she showed a good
attitude. She's probably typical of her sire in that she needs a
little time and Karl thinks she'll win, but how good she can
become we don't know. It would be nice to get a win into her
before she comes back here to start breeding."
Lord Shanakill, unlike Shalaa, actually raced for Gittins and
provided the young owner with a memorable day when winning
the G1 Prix Jean Prat in 2009. The stallion, who has sired a
Group 1 winner in My Dream Boat (Ire) and is still owned by
Gittins, these days plies his trade at Pin Oak Lane Farm in
Pennsylvania and Castlefarm offer a daughter of
Starspangledbanner (Aus) out of the Lord Shanakill mare The
Last Sister (Ire) as lot 431 on Tuesday. Cont. p2

The February born filly has further ties to the Gittins family as
the dam is a half-sister to Lady Springbank (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}), a
homebred mare who won a pair of Group 3s for Gittins in 2010.
"She is from a family we know well and she is a lovely, scopey
filly. We went to Starspangledbanner as the Choisir cross has
worked well already with the family and she has a fantastic
temperament and hopefully she will be popular."
The third foal Castlefarm will offer is lot 739 and this son of
Sea The Stars (Ire) has an attractive profile being out of the
young winning mare Ghostflower (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), whose first
foal by Pivotal (GB) was bought by Shadwell for 170,000gns as a
yearling in Newmarket last month. However, that did not
represent a sales ring bonanza for Castlefarm, as they had sold
the youngster last year as a foal for 20,000gns. Gittins is
philosophical about results such as this and knows enough about
the game to accept the rough with the smooth. "He's a lovely
individual and he will make up into a cracking yearling," he said
about the March-born son of Sea The Stars. "He has plenty of
size and substance but he is a horse who will improve an awful
lot between now and next October." While Gittins and his wife,
who is a daughter of the legendary Mick Kinane, have retained a
few over the years to offer as yearlings, their policy in general is
to sell their stock as foals.
"I think there are more end users buying foals at the moment
than was the case a few years ago and while there will always be
plenty of foals whose sale price increases significantly from foal
to yearling, from a vendor=s point of view you are cutting out
another 12 months of risk by going down the foal route.
Also yearling prep is something you have to be geared up for
as it requires a lot more time, staff and resources and we've just
made the decision that we are better equipped to sell them as
foals and if pinhookers make money out of buying from us that's
fine, as it means the next year they will be back to have a good
look at our draft."
While taking the rough with the smooth is a fact of life in the
sales ring, it also applies to results on the racetrack and the
extended Gittins family has certainly experienced joy and
heartache in equal measure through the exploits of the dual
Grade 1-winning National Hunt mare Fayonagh (Ire) (Kalanisi
{Ire}), who ran in the colours of Maura Gittins, Mark's mother.
Having displayed brilliance to win Grade 1 bumpers at
Cheltenham and Punchestown last season, the Gordon Elliott-
trained 6-year-old had made a winning start to her hurdling
career at Fairyhouse in October and looked to have a glorious
season ahead of her only to fatally break a hind leg in a piece of
work late last month. "That was hard to take. If it had been a
career-ending injury it wouldn't have been so bad as she would
have made a fantastic broodmare, but to lose her completely
was heartbreaking," Gittins said.

Gittins is keen to move forward and a more positive example
of some significant recent investment in fillies to race and
ultimately breed from is Ellthea (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Gittins paid
i88,000 for the daughter of MGSW Tropical Lady (Ire) (Sri
Pekan) as a yearling and the Karl Burke-trained 2-year-old repaid
that investment in spades when winning the G3 C.L. & M.F.
Weld Park S. at Naas in September, one of three juvenile wins
for the filly. "We have about eight fillies to go back to Karl
[Burke] for next year, obviously Ellthea is probably the highest
profile one at the moment so hopefully she can have a good
year next year and more importantly retire back here in one
piece. We also have a nice Oasis Dream filly and a Dark Angel
that Karl thinks a lot of too. Ellthea has been a star for us this
year, though and we think she has more to offer and we're
dreaming of a Guineas somewhere with her next year."
While the Gittins family have had horses with a number of
trainers over the years they have enjoyed a long association
with, Burke who trained Lord Shanakill, and Gittins is a fully
subscribed member of the trainer's growing fan base. "He's a
fantastic communicator and he knows what we are trying to
achieve in the long run, which is to make potential broodmares.
So winning, attaining black-type if possible and also protecting
the ratings of these fillies are all priorities and Karl's results
speak for themselves. It's great to have a trainer who
understands our priorities and long may it continue."

While Gittins has plenty of young stock of his own to be
excited about, he is particularly looking forward to seeing the
first foals of his former protege Shalaa enter the world in the
spring. There are two mares at Castlefarm carrying to the rookie
stallion including Rakiza (Ire) (Elnadim), who has already bred a
smart type in the 108-rated Godolphin runner Parfait (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}).
"Even looking objectively at Shalaa, he has all the qualities of
an exciting stallion, with his own sire line, his race record and his
looks and we are obviously keen to do our bit to try and support
him."
Within eight years of acquiring Castlefarm, Mark Gittins has
developed a growing, 20-strong band of mares, matching them
with strong sire power. Such a strategy should bear significant
fruit in the coming years both in the sales ring and on the
racecourse.
WITH JOHN WARREN Earlier this month, Haras de Montfort & Preaux announced it
had been chosen by The Queen to stand her homebred Group 3
winner Recorder (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) at stud. The TDN caught up
with John Warren, The Queen=s racing manager, to get his
thoughts on the son of the G2 Cherry Hinton S. winner Memory
(Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), and find out why Her Majesty chose
to stand the horse in France.
TDN: Recorder had an abbreviated career, but showed enough
talent during that time to win the G3 Acomb S. on his third
start. Can you talk about how the team rated him while he was
in training?
JW: Recorder showed great signs of maturity right from when
he was born to being sent into training early, as he was so
forward. I received a telephone call from his trainer William
Haggas in the February saying he wanted to push on with him
and he thought he could be aimed towards the Chesham S. at
Royal Ascot. His dam, Memory, was a top-class 2-year-old who
ran her first race the first week of May, so it did not surprise us
that the feedback was so positive. Unfortunately, a minor
setback prevented him from getting to Ascot, but he was on the
course in July when we were getting quite excited about his
prospects.
TDN: Why did Her Majesty decide to stand Recorder in France,
and specifically at Montfort & Preaux?
JW: France is doing so well with their very good stallions. We
have been following the great success of the people at Haras de
Montfort & Preaux, and when I suggested to Her Majesty that
they were very good professional people, she was keen to send
her horse to them. We hope the French breeders find in
Recorder an opportunity to use a precocious but classically-bred
stallion, where there are not too many bred on those lines
currently standing in France.
TDN: Will Recorder be syndicated, and will Her Majesty
support him with her own mares?
JW: Her Majesty will certainly be sending mares to Recorder, as
we believe that the horse could have been top-class. The Queen
inspected Recorder at Sandringham last week and we stood
there saying, 'for all we know we might be looking at the winner
of the 2000 Guineas.=
TDN: We know that Her Majesty is incredibly passionate about
racing, but is standing stallions something she enjoys being
involved in too?
JW: Horse racing is The Queen=s only release from all of her
duties and like everything she does in her life, she puts 100%
effort into it. Many people have said to me that The Queen's
long interest and dedication to racing and breeding has inspired
owners and breeders to participate in our wonderful industry all
over the world. Cont. p5

TDN: What can you tell us about Recorder=s pedigree and
physique?
JW: As breeders will see when they go to inspect him, he will
suit any shape mare. Not all stallions do that; he is a pretty
faultless individual with tremendous strength and power with
great movement, and he is a beautiful specimen.
WITH ALEX ELLIOTT
1) What is your one essential to get you through the busy sales
season?
A good client is always deemed essential and a morning phone
call to them, whilst reading the TDN and downing a Berocca,
usually puts a pep in my step!
2) Which stallion's first yearlings impressed you most this
year?
Verrazano (More Than Ready) in America and Sea The Moon
(Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Europe. I managed to buy two Sea
The Moons, both of which will be trained by Ralph Beckett, and I
think he is a stallion who has every chance.
3) What horse springs to mind as your favourite purchase?
Another Batt (Ire) (Windsor Knot {Ire}) is a horse Roger
O=Callaghan of Tally-Ho Stud recommended I buy earlier in the
year after being placed in two Irish maidens for his
owner/trainer/breeder John Nicholson. He actually beat US
Navy Flag (War Front) into third when he placed second at The
Curragh on his second start. I purchased him on behalf of Excel
Racing, who is backed by England striker Charlie Austin and he is
trained by a good friend and supporter of mine, George Scott.
The horse has already proved to be a wonderful servant running
well at Royal Ascot, placing in numerous stakes races and
rounding out his season by winning a valuable Group 3 in
Turkey. He is very light on pedigree and is fairly insignificant to
look at but has the heart of a lion and a huge personality and we
are looking forward to taking him to Qatar and Dubai in the New
Year.
I don=t buy as many National Hunt horses as I would like to,
however, when I first set up Elliott Bloodstock Services in 2014 I
was fortunate enough to be able to buy Supasundae (GB)
(Galileo {Ire}) for the late Alan Potts. When he won at the
Cheltenham Festival this year it was very satisfying and I look
forward to any time he runs. He should be very competitive in
Grade 1s this season.
4) Finally, if you had to select one other agent to buy a horse
for you, who would it be and why?
Ben McElroy. Not only is he a great mate but his results both in
the ring and on the track speak for themselves. Ben and another
of my closest pals, Simon Callaghan, are proving to be a
formidable team Stateside with purchases such as Fashion Plate,
Firing Line and Moonshine Memories. Ben and I generally split
Keeneland September up between ourselves and it works well
as I know that I=ll like whatever he leaves on. We try and do the
same whenever he visits Europe.

thereafter, stretching clear of her rivals under urging inside the
final quarter mile to easily register a career high.
Mint Julep is the lone scorer from three runners produced by
an unraced half-sister to GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile-winning sire
Wilko (Awesome Again), who also placed in the G1 Dubai World
Cup, GI Santa Anita Derby and GI Hollywood Futurity, and she is
kin to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Monnai (Fr) (Le Havre

(GB) (Roan Rocket {GB}) is a half-sister to G1 Epsom Oaks and
G1 Irish Oaks-winning British and Irish champion Blue Wind (Ire)
(Lord Gayle).

FIFTH STAKES WINNER FOR YOU=RESOTHRILLING The Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) became the fifth stakes
winner for the excellent producer You=resothrilling (Storm Cat)
when winning Saturday=s G2 Zipping Classic for owner Lloyd
Williams and trainer Robert Hickmott at Sandown Park in
Australia. The 3-year-old had previously been trained by Aidan
O=Brien when he raced in Ireland as Taj Mahal and he made his
first two starts Down Under for O=Brien: he beat one home in
the G1 Ladbrokes S. on Oct. 14 and improved to be fourth in the
G1 Emirates S. on Nov. 11 before transferring to Hickmott.

The Taj Mahal took over the lead prematurely passing the 800m
but never looked in danger, eventually hitting the line 3 1/2
lengths to the better of his stablemate, the 2016 G1 Melbourne
Cup winner Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), under a hand ride.
AWe were keen to run him today just to learn a bit more about
him, it=s his first go at the mile-and-a-half and he=s done a good
job,@ Williams told Racing.com. AHe=s a colt with probably the
best pedigree in the world so we=ve probably got to try to win
some of these good mile-and-a-quarter races. I would=ve
thought Australian Cups and Ranvets would be his go and maybe
we=ll stretch him out to The BMW.@
You=resothrilling=s first foal was the 2014 G1 Irish 1000
Guineas winner Marvellous (Ire), and while that would have
been the crowning point for many a mare, she would outdo
herself the following year when producing the dual Guineas
winner Gleneagles (Ire). The G3 Park S. winner Coolmore (Ire)
followed, then The Taj Mahal, and this year=s representative is
the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Jean-Luc Lagardere winner
Happily (Ire). All of You=resothrilling=s foals are by Galileo (Ire),
including a colt born this year.
The Zipping quinella was also the swangsong for the stable for
Hickmott, who now goes out on his own after eight years as

NEW STAKES WINNER FOR DEEP IMPACT Makoto Kaneko raced both Deep Impact (Jpn) and King
Kamehameha (Jpn), sire and damsire of Wagnerian (Jpn), and
Kaneko looks to have a good one produced from his two
champions in the form of that 2-year-old bay, who remained
unbeaten in his stakes debut at Tokyo on Saturday. A debut
winner going 10 furlongs on July 16, Wagnerian dropped back a
panel at Hanshin two months later and won at allowance level
by 2 1/2 lengths. Dropping back to travel at least 10 lengths off
the pace with Maurice (Jpn)=s full-brother and >TDN Rising Star=
Lucas (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) right on his heels here,
Wagnerian began to work his way closer rounding the turn but
still had plenty to do at the top of the lane. Kicking into gear
down the middle of the track passing the 400 with Lucas still
shadowing him, Wagnerian never looked in danger of losing
thereafter, drawing clear to win with ease in a handride.
Wagnerian is a full-brother to Kaneko=s SW & GSP Tenderly
Voice, and GI Frizette S. winner Sutra (Meadowlake) appears
under the third dam. Wagnerian=s second dam, a $280,000
purchase for Kaneko out of the 1996 Barretts March sale, was a
six-time black-type winner of over $4.3 million.

HALO IS ANGELIC FOR SAVABEEL Just one week removed from siring his 14th Group 1 winner in
Te Akau Racing=s Embellish (NZ) who saluted in the G1 New
Zealand 2000 Guineas, Waikato Stud=s Savabeel earned his 15th
top-flight scorer, when Go Racing=s Hasahalo (NZ) ran off with
the 1600m NZ$300,000 G1 Gavelhouse.com 1000 Guineas at
Riccarton Park on Nov. 18.
The Stephen McKee trainee was sent postward at 22-1 and
raced solidly in midfield while Malambo (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ})
claimed leadership duties, closely shadowed by Pierrocity (Aus)
(Pierro {Aus}) and heavy favourite Prom Queen (NZ) (Super Easy
{NZ}), a bit rank on the rail. Drifting farther back as the
frontrunners hit halfway, Sam Spratt had the diminutive bay in a
good position and steered Hasahalo out toward the center of
the course as Prom Queen took up the baton in upper stretch.
The chestnut=s advantage was brief, however, as Hasahalo let
down powerfully at the 200-metre mark, eventually storming
across the line four lengths clear of GSW Dijon Bleu (NZ)
(Burgundy {NZ}), who was a half-length to the good of The
Lustre (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}). Prom Queen faded to ninth.
AI was really happy with her last run at Ellerslie in a strong
Rating 85 race,@ McKee, who was winning his first New Zealand
1000 Guineas, told www.nzracing.co.nz. AShe got back and
never got a clear run and before that she struck a wet track.
There was still a question mark about the mile today, but she
got the job done well and found the line strongly.@
Added reignswoman Spratt, AShe went past them like they
were tied to the ground. When I asked her to go, she had fire
coming out the back end.@
Runner-up in the G2 Challenge S. at second asking at Trentham
last December, Hasahalo saluted in the G3 Eclipse S. over 1200m
at Ellerslie on New Year=s Day, before taking bridesmaid honours
in the Listed Karaka Million behind G1SW Melody Belle (NZ)
(Commands {Aus}) at the end of the month. Out of the top three
in her next four starts, Hasahalo was 11th in a Benchmark 85
handicap at Ellerslie over 1400 metres on Nov. 7 following a
ninth in the G3 Gold Trail S. at Hastings on Sept. 23.
Pedigree Notes... Bred by Waikato Stud and Mrs. I. O=Shea and offered at the
NZB Premier Yearling Sale in 2016, Hasahalo was knocked down
for NZ$110,000 to Go Racing and is the third winner out of the
placed Encosta de Lago (Aus) mare Halloween (Aus), herself a
full-sister to Australian GSP Just Forget It (Aus) and a half-sister
to Generous Nature (Aus) (Carnegie {Ire}). The latter is
responsible for Savvy Nature (NZ) (Savabeel {NZ}), a group
winner in Australian and Hong Kong, who was third in the G1
Chandon Spring Champion S. and GSW Addictive Nature (Aus)
(Savabeel {Aus}). Second dam La Lagune (Aus) (Danehill) was a
MSW in Australia, and ran second in the 2001 G1 Blue Diamond
S. The only black-type winner to date out of her dam, Hasahalo
is followed by a juvenile full-brother named Hasabro (NZ) and a
yearling filly by Sacred Falls (NZ).

LOCALS ON TRIAL FOR LONGINES HKIRby Alan Carasso
While the foreign invitees for the 2017 Longines Hong Kong
International Races are set to be revealed this coming
Wednesday, Nov. 22, those based locally will get their chance to
stake their claims in a trio of course-and-distance preps Sunday
afternoon at Sha Tin Racecourse.
Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) was forced to miss last year=s
International meeting via injury, but there have been no such
missteps this time around and the 2016 Horse of the Year is
strictly the one to beat in the G2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup over
his pet distance of 2000m. Winner at that trip of the 2016 BMW
Hong Kong Derby and G1 Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II
Cup, the bay makes his second start of this season, having run
his final 400m in :22.21 en route to a sixth under 132 pounds in
the G2 Sha Tin Trophy H. Oct. 22. Tommy Berry has a return call
Sunday.
AWe=re expecting a bold showing from him now,@ the Aussie
told the HKJC notes team. AHe is now up to a suitable distance
and he=s fitter with the one run under his belt and the trial in
between. We=re very happy with him.@
South African G1SP Nassa (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}, 115 pounds)
charged home to grab front-running Time Warp (GB)
(Archipenko, 123) in the G3 Sa Sa Ladies= Purse H. and both back
up on two weeks= rest to take a crack at level weights and in
receipt of five pounds from Werther.
Mr Stunning (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) is Hong Kong=s
top-rated galloper on 130 and is part of a terrific field set to
tackle the G2 BOCHK Wealth Management Jockey Club Sprint.
The 5-year-old overcame a disappointing return to the races
Oct. 1 to outfinish Lucky Bubbles (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) to win
the G2 Premier Bowl H. at a juicy 8-1, but will have to repeat the
dose without the services of top jockey Joao Moreira. The
>Magic Man= opts for stablemate Thewizardofoz (Aus)
(Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), no better than ninth in the Premier
Bowl, but very impressive in taking out a recent barrier trial on
the dirt that has Moreira full of confidence.
AHe has one run under his belt and that=s what he needed to
be competitive,@ he told HKJC=s Edward Sadler. AI don=t think it
was a bad run. He came home strong and he should be better
now.@
The G2 BOCHK Wealth Management Jockey Club Mile is the
last of the three preps and attracts its defending champion
Beauty Only (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who followed up
with victory in the Hong Kong Mile. The 6-year-old has lacked his
prior spark in finishing unplaced behind Beauty Generation (NZ)
(Road to Rock {Aus}) in his two runs this term, including a ninth
in the G2 Sha Tin Trophy H. Oct. 22. The >now= horse appears to
be Seasons Bloom (Aus) (Captain Sonador {Aus}), who flashed
home to take a Class 1 over 1200m on his first start this prep
Sept. 3 ahead of a fast-closing second to Beauty Generation in
the G3 Celebration Cup H. Oct. 1. Moreira has the call for Danny
Shum.

to mind that Saturday=s GIII Cardinal H. at Churchill was forced
to the main track late due to wet weather as she survived a
rider=s claim of foul to notch her fourth win of the season.
Installed the 5-2 second choice in a scratch-reduced field, the
dark bay drafted behind pacesetting longshot Coco Channel
(English Channel) in midpack early. Moving with Fair Point
(Smart Strike) turning for home, she snuck up the fence and she
and that aforementioned foe swarmed the frontrunner at the
head of the lane. Coco Channel was squeezed out slightly as
Tricky Escape and Fair Point dueled to the wire, and the former
got her nose down before a few anxious moments as the
stewards took a look at the replay before disallowing objections
against the top two.

KEENOV cont. from p1 AThe entire sale was very good,@
Keeneland=s Director of Sales Geoffrey
Russell said when reached for comment
upon the conclusion of Saturday=s trade. AIt
was a very vibrant marketplace from the
start of the sale all the way through. I
thought it was very strong, especially in the
upper and middle markets. Overall, the
feeling that we got from buyers and sellers
over the 12 days was that it was a very
vibrant marketplace and quality offerings
were bringing premium prices.@
Purchases at the top of the market were
spread among a very diverse buying bench.
Fourteen different buyers representing
interests in the U.S., South America, Ireland,
England and Japan accounted for the 18
horses sold for $1 million or more.
AIt=s a good, diverse group of buyers,@
Russell said. AIt=s good to see with 18 horses
bringing over a million dollars that it=s spread among a diverse
group of buyers, both international and domestic. These mares
are what everyone wants to buy and it therefore increases the
price. Everybody is after that magic word
>quality.= The quality offerings--mares and
foals--are bringing premium prices at the
moment.@
The market for weanlings was also
extremely lively, with a colt by Curlin (Hip
365) from the Hill >n= Dale Sales
consignment bringing a sale-topping $1
million from agent Andre Lynch. Plenty of
first-crop sires were highly sought after as
well, including the aforementioned
American Pharoah. His five weanlings sold
averaged $416,000, led by a $575,000 colt
(Hip 984) from the Eaton Sales consignment
purchased by Scott and Evan Dilworth.
American Pharoah ranked third among all
sires of weanlings by both gross and
average.
AI thought the weanling pinhookers had a
good year this year at the yearling sales,
and with the stock market doing what it=s
doing right now setting records consistently, there=s more
money around and people are a little more confident with their
cash,@ Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales said by phone Saturday.

Russell added, AYou had two factors going on--the pinhookers,
who are a huge part of the weanling market, but also we=re
starting to see some prominent end-users come in and buy
foals. When those two forces team together, it increases the
prices.@
Taylor Made Sales Agency was the sale=s leading consignor
with 224 horses sold for gross receipts of $23,652,500 and an
average of $105,592. Taylor Made sold four broodmares for
seven figures, led by Oscar Party (Dixie Union) (i/f to Tapit) (Hip
114), who brought $1.9 million from Alpha Delta Stables.
AEverybody is trying to move up the ladder in terms of quality,@
Taylor concluded.
The next Keeneland Sale on the calendar is the 2018 January
Horses of All Ages Sale, to be held Mon. Jan 8, through Friday,
Jan. 12.
Co-Toppers Saturday... Two horses sold for $35,000 a piece to top Saturday=s final
session. Gold Indy (A.P. Indy--Girl of Gold, by Seeking the Gold),
in foal to Tourist, sold to Adel Alatawy. The 11-year-old was
consigned by Gainesway, agent, as Hip 3988. A colt from the
first crop of Tapiture out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare
Pegastorm brought $35,000 from Clarmont Bloodstock Club. He
was consigned by Brookdale Sales, agent for Copper Penny
Stables, as Hip 4055.
On Saturday, Keeneland sold 115 horses for $687,100, good for
an average of $5,975 and a median of $3,500. The RNA rate was

What They=re Saying at KEENOV...
AThis sale has such an international appeal; there was an
abundance of top-level buyers who were active deep into the
second week. Our sales staff, in concert with our representatives
in Europe, Australasia, China and Japan, travel across the U.S.
and around the world to recruit buyers and continually
strengthen our buying bench. It=s a hallmark of what we do at
Keeneland.@ -Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob
Elliston
ANovember was a continuation of September; it was electric.
There was a big appetite for quality horses. Anything with
quality brought a lot more than what we thought they were
worth. So that=s a good sign, a good indicator. Our horses are
competing with the rest of the world and winning. We have a
lot of speed in this country and people know that, keeps them
coming back to Keeneland. It=s been a very good market.@

What They=re Saying cont.
AA lot of people are looking for the same thing. They want the
top mares, the best mares. It=s very competitive at that level and
you end up sometimes paying more than what you wish to pay.
That=s the nature of the business. We believe that if the
economy keeps going like it is, next year it=s probably going to
be even more competitive on that level.@ -Don Alberto=s
Fabricio Buffolo
AThe market was so strong. A lot of people showed up, and
there was a lot of demand for good, quality horses. If you=re
buying, it=s hard to buy at the top end of the market. It=s good
for us as a consignor. If you put good horses on the market now,
you get rewarded.@ -Liz Crow of first-time November Sale
consignor EliTE Sales
AIt was a very strong market for weanlings the whole way
through. We were expecting as much coming into the sale
because September was so good. It was stronger than I
expected to be honest.@ -Adrian Regan of Hunter Valley Farm

AThis filly tries so hard. Lynn does a great job with her. We broke
well and got into a good spot. She just kept tugging along and
dug in in the final stages.@
Tricky Escape broke through third out on the Laurel main track
in February, but jumped
up significantly on the

when she annexed a

score in the GIII Violet S.
Aug. 19. Second in the
well-funded Ramsey

recently third in a Belmont optional claimer Oct. 6.
Trainer Lynn Ashby, an eight-time champion trainer of
Arabians whose first graded Thoroughbred win came with Tricky
Escape in the Violet, said, AI was a little concerned when it came
off the grass, but I knew how much she likes an off track. I was
worried when we couldn=t switch her hind shoes, so I just told
Chris to take care of her in the turns. She=s as game as they
come and does everything you ask.@
Tricky Escape has a yearling full-brother, and her dam sold for
$2000 carrying a Stay Thirsty colt to Brandi Jo Fett of Iowa=s
Hidden Acres Farm at this year=s Keeneland January Sale.
The following is part of a series in which we have posed the
question above to a number of racing industry participants.
The only rule is that you cannot choose your own boss.
CRAIG BANDOROFF, DENALI STUD: Sheikh Mohammed
He has made so many contributions to our industry that
everyone is familiar with and we are all better off because of
him. His contributions include: the jobs he provides, the land he
has preserved and the capital he has spent buying horses. But
the two things I admire most are his passion for the horse and
for education. He leads by example and as the ruler of a country
in a turbulent part of the world where many suffer, he believes
in educating his people. His sponsorship of the Flying Start
program may be his most important contribution and gift to our
industry. I have seen the results of this program up close and
personal. It is truly amazing in every way. Sheikh Mohammed
can never be replaced. We just need to be grateful he appeared.

Richardson Honored with Jones Award cont.
Richardson, a fixture on the Kentucky racing scene for almost
half a century, is a member of the Kentucky Horse Racing
Commission, The Jockey Club, Thoroughbred Owners and
Breeders Association and Churchill Downs racing committee. He
was a longtime Breeders= Cup board member and past president
of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky
Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders.
On the bloodstock side, Richardson was involved in the
selection of some of the best horses his Hall of Fame cousin
Woody Stephens trained, including important sire Danzig, Horse
of the Year Conquistador Cielo and GISW and prominent stallion
Gone West. He also bred and raced the likes of multiple stakes
winner and Churchill Downs stakes namesake Mrs. Revere and
Grade I winner Northern Emerald with Dr. Hiram Polk.
AJust totally shocked, and really honored,@ said Richardson, a
close personal friend of the late Jones. AThe last several years of
his life, Warner couldn=t travel. So if I was in town, I spent
virtually every weekend with him. We=d let Harriet (Jones=s wife)
get out to do things, and we=d bet horse races. He had two big
televisions set up and we=d bet horse races all afternoon. He
was a lot of fun and I learned a lot from him.@

start her career prior to finishing fifth in the GIII Beaumont S. at

Preakness at Pimlico May 19.
Coming off a six month layoff, the bay settled into a good
stalking position outside of the leaders through the opening
quarter of :22.24. The 7-2 shot had to go three wide on the far
turn, but kept progressing, rallying past rivals inside the eighth
pole and kept going for a triumphant return.
The winner=s dam was the lone stakes victor produced by
Winning Lady. Carl=s Frosty Girl has a juvenile filly named
Silvercents (Goldencents) and was bred back to Goldencents this
season. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Testing One Two finished third in her unveiling going 4 1/2
furlongs Aug. 23 at Evangeline Downs before stretching to two
turns here last time out Oct. 19, graduating by 6 3/4 lengths.
The bay broke alertly and stalked the early leaders despite
going three wide into the first turn as the 9-10 favorite in this
contest. She made steady progress towards the front up the
backstretch and gained the advantage entering the far turn.
Testing One Two was guided to the rail and continued to widen
her lead with each and every stride while never being asked
through the final eighth, posting a convincing score while under
wraps.
This is the first foal out of Yes Sir, who is also responsible for a
yearling full-sister to the winner. Click for the Equibase.com

Dream Tree, a narrow debut winner over the re-opposing
Midnight Bisou going six furlongs at Santa Anita Oct. 27, just had
enough left in the tank to hold off that foe once again to remain
unbeaten here.
Placed in a tracking second through an opening quarter in
:22.55 while removing blinkers here, the even-money favorite
turned up the heat to challenge for command on the far turn
and kicked for home in complete command. Dream Tree began
to grow a bit leg weary late, however, and was just saved by the
wire.
"It isn't that she pulls herself up; she just idles a little bit in that
last sixteenth,@ winning rider Drayden Van Dyke said. AShe did it
the other day (maiden victory) and she did it some again today.
They took the blinkers off her today to get her to relax. She's
talented; no doubt."
The winner=s dam is also represented by an Uncle Mo filly of
2016 and a Lea colt of 2017. She was bred back to Blame.
Winning owner Phoenix Thoroughbred has made a big splash
on the sales scene in the U.S. and abroad throughout 2017 and
also campaigns >TDN Rising Stars= Diamondsandpearls

HARDBOOT (c, 2, Lucky Pulpit--Mme. Espionage, by
Cryptoclearance) came running late to be fifth in her career bow
sprinting over the Santa Anita lawn against fellow Cal-breds
Oct. 26 and added blinkers and Lasix for this second go. Away in
good order from her rail draw, the 5-1 shot was reserved in sixth
off early splits of :23.15 and :47.42. Taken out three wide to go
around a wall of horses entering the lane, the bay surged to the
lead alongside Smart Knows Smart (Eskendereya) and
outbobbed that one on the line for a nose success. The winner=s
dam has not produced any foals since Hardboot, but was most
recently bred to Jeranimo. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $32,200.

with a victory in the state-bred Clarendon S. Aug. 5. Third in the

fellow Ontario-breds in the Bull Page S. Oct. 9. Racing in a three-
wide sixth through a first half in :46.61, the bay charged past his
rivals in the lane and held off a late-running Silent Sting to score.
A[Trainer] Robert [Tiller] and I were talking about it before the
race. We liked the post position and that helped us a lot,@ said
jockey Rafael Hernandez. AThat was one of the reasons we won
the race. The horse set up perfect today. He relaxed good and
he made his run down the lane. He showed up today.@ The
