Park County is nestled along the free-flowing Yellowstone River with Paradise Valley and Yellowstone Park to the south and the Shields River Valley to the north. The county was settled by ranchers and farmers during the 1880’s when the Northern Pacific railroad laid its tracks through the area. Livingston (population 7000+) is the county seat. The main street and the historic district are reminders of the city’s bygone era. Downtown buildings from the late 1800’s still stand as a testimony to the old west and give Livingston its special turn-of-the century charm. Whether you like to browse through fine art galleries, spend an evening at the Blue Slipper or Firehouse 5 Playhouse, eat at fine restaurants, or shop the boutiques, you will find Livingston offers them all. The Livingston Roundup is ranked as one of the nation’s 10 top rodeos and is held every year on July 2, 3 and 4 with top competitors from all over the USA and Canada. Other scheduled activities include: the music-filled Summerfest Along the Yellowstone, Kids’ Trout Derby, Festival of the Arts, and the GNR Sustainability Fair. Livingston was named in June of 2009 as one of Outdoor Life magazine’s Top Communities for Sportsmen.

Just 25 miles to the west of Livingston is Bozeman, MT which also has a historic downtown and art district and is home to a major university, symphony orchestra, and excellent medical facilities. There are multiple ski areas nearby: Bridger Bowl, Big Sky and Moonlight Basin.

Western luxury: executive home, helicopter hangar, jet hangar (at local airport), custom horse barns, outdoor arena, manager’s home, guest house, and an 1880’s legacy.

Luxury, legacy and logistics. Located 10 miles south of historic Livingston in the prized

Pine Creek drainage within the world famous Paradise Valley of Montana, DANCING WIND RANCH offers a rare opportunity to own one of the last great legacy ranches of Montana. The best of “the last best place” beckons from the ranch: geologic features, mountain splendor, crystal clear water, and pastoral meadows. Sharing 3.5 miles of border with United States Forest Service and Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, the property provides unspoiled and dramatic views in every direction while offering privacy and protection without isolation. Luxury amenities include a stacked stone architecturally designed home, helicopter hanger (at the ranch), jet hangar (at Mission Field) and one of the most photographed settings in the Rocky Mountain west. With the current owner being only the second since the 1880’s, a legacy of preservation, sound management practices and appreciation of the land will be passed to the next steward of the ranch. DANCING WIND RANCH is a unique and unprecedented offering.

The “casually elegant” Montana style home was designed by Jonathan Foote and completed by OSM in 1998. Incorporating the generous use of stacked stone, antique timbers, imported woods, custom accoutrements, view capturing windows, and a dramatic great room with custom back bar and a massive stone fireplace, the home lends itself to the intimacy of a small group or the high energy of a large gathering. A 2400 sq ft stone patio overlooks the spring-fed trout pond and leads to the meadows which provide the setting for American Indian teepee that is a great rustic guest quarters as well as being decorative. Built in 2005, a board and bat custom barn completes the executive mountain meadow compound. Although originally built to accommodate horses, its’ use has centered around barbeques, barn dances in the loft area, and a woodworking area. The home is accessed via the private paved road which leads from the entry, through the ranch, and to the owner’s personal residence.

In addition to the large helicopter hangar, and shop/office/bath, the ranch headquarters is well laid out and includes a 3 bedroom /3 bath manager’s residence with 2 car garage. The large great room opens to the deck and back entry porch. Dog kennels are located in the back yard which borders the shaded meanders of Pool Creek. The year-round creek passes under the paved road and flows between the custom 5 stall horse barn and traverses its way past the 4 bedroom/3 bath guest house and on to the meadow below.

Supporting ranch operation buildings include a calving shed with enclosed veterinary area, livestock working corrals, hay storage area, and horse shelters. A well-kept antique log barn, office, mobile home and dog kennels are located on the southern side of the property. They are currently leased.

The ranch-owned 60’x70’x23’ hangar at Mission Field will accommodate most mid-size jets. It complements the helicopter hangar, built to house mid-size jets (or smaller) located at the ranch headquarters.

DANCING WIND RANCH has been operated since its’ inception in the early 1880’s as a cattle ranch; raising hay, cattle, supporting livestock, and some small grains. Currently the ranch supports 200+ pairs of angus cattle in addition to bulls and replacement heifers. Fences, irrigation, equipment and pastures are in excellent condition. Experienced management in place.

Dancing Wind HistoryEarly beginnings for Dancing Wind Ranch began with the Allen family settling

the ranch land in the 1870’s. The ranch was gifted to Albert Allen and his new

bride, Margaret Shorthill, by Albert’s uncle in January 1895.

Margaret’s father, David Shorthill had discovered gold in Emigrant Gulch in

August of 1864. After the abandonment of the mines in 1866, he visited the

Yellowstone Park area and parts of Canada before returning to his family in

Pennsylvania. In 1880, he returned to the Upper Yellowstone area and located

a homestead in what was to become Park County. It is reported that Margaret

was the first white baby born in Paradise Valley and that the valley was named by

David Shorthill. The ranch was owned by his descendents until 1995 when it sold

to Jay and Tamra Call. (A more complete family history is available from Legacy Lands, LLC.)
