DESCRIPTION
These paintings are a continuation of a series of work titled "(Re) Interpreting the Work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and the Art of the Middle Ages for a Contemporary Society," I had started in late 2001 (after 9/11) that are inspired by medieval & renaissance artists and artworks, more specifically, the apocalyptic artworks by artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dürer, Jean Duvet, and Gerard van Groeningen. The focus of my work deals with historical and contemporary socio-political issues and events happening in our present day society and world-at-large using religious and secular images, iconography, and symbols. Additionally, I incorporate famous quotes that spans all periods of human history. Each painting is dense with imagery that is stylistically, engraving like, using “horror vacui” technique that can be at times, cryptic. I want to challenge my audience in how they (may) interpret what they see by using images that are “more familiar” in Western society. And, to assist my audience in interpreting each painting; I have juxtapose some of the paintings with a famous quote(s) that will hopefully act as a tool for them to better understanding the meaning of each painting and/or series as a whole.TRANSCRIPT
