Oxidation-reduction.

The oxidation-reduction reactions are very important in our lives; this type of reactions happen in our organism such as the metabolism of food, cellular respiration, etc. In addition, they are present around us as shown in metal corrosion, the darkening of apples when you peel them, in combustion, etc.

1. Individually, do a comprehensive reading of the topics corresponding to the oxidation-reduction processes in your textbook and take notes of the main ideas you find.

2. Create a document-type digital application, taking into consideration the next options (choose one): a. Word documentb. Online document from Gmail: Watch Google Drive Tutorialc. Document from Outlook, Hotmail or Institutional email: Watch

OneDrive Tutorial

In the previously created document:

3. Elaborate a description table showing the definition and a few examples of these concepts:

a) Oxidation-reductionb) Oxidationc) Reductiond) Oxidation numbere) Oxidizing agentf) Reducing agent

g) How are oxidation and reduction identified on an oxidation number scale? Explain.

What are oxidation numbers?

The oxidation numbers (or oxidation states) are used to know how many electrons are in an atom; these do not always match to the real charge of molecules, but it is possible to calculate the oxidation numbers of the atoms that are involved in a covalent or ionic bond.

4. Analyze in detail the Rules of assignment of oxidation number provided below:

1. The oxidation number of the uncombined elements in their natural state have an

oxidation number of 0.

2. All of the elements in group IA (H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) have an oxidation number of 1+ in their compounds.

3. All of the elements in group IIA (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra) have an oxidation number of 2+ in their compounds.

4. Hydrogen has an oxidation number of 1+ in its compounds, except in hydrides where the oxidation number is 1-, for example: NaH1-, CaH2

1-, AlH31-.

10

5. The oxidation number of oxygen is 2-, except in peroxides where its oxidation number is 1-, for example: Na2O2

1-

6. The elements in group VIIA or halogens (F, Cl, Br, I) have an oxidation number of 1- in their binary compounds.

7. The sum of the oxidation numbers of the charges must always be 0.

6. Carefully read the topic of the representation of the oxidation-reduction processes through chemical equations on your textbook and take notes of the main ideas you find.

7. From the previous reading and the note taking, analyze each of the equations that represent oxidation-reduction processes, which are shown in the table of the next slide.
