Selecting from the Many Varieties of Ear Plugs
The utilization of ear plugs is one of
the easiest things you can do to
protect your ears from harmful noise
levels. Ear plugs physically impede
sound waves when worn. Although it
may seem like a simple product,
there are actually many different
types of ear plugs available and
understanding these differences is
essential in choosing the most
appropriate style for a given situation.
The first question to ask when picking out ear plugs is the amount of
necessary noise reduction. Every plug has a noise reduction rating (NRR)
that signifies the amount of noise it cancels out, with the best quality ear
plugs ranging from 21 to 33 decibels. Figure out where and when you will
use your ear plugs. For example, you will find that plugs with a lower NRR
will be sufficient if you plan to use them to block out traffic noise while
working or studying. However if you spend a lot of time around fairly loud
noises you’ll need a higher NRR as would be the case for heavy equipment
operators or musicians.
Next, take some time to consider the composition of the plugs you are
considering. Foam is one of the most basic materials used in ear plugs. This
type of plug is compressed as it is inserted, then expands to plug the ear.
Often times, a foam plug is not inserted far enough into the canal to provide
the listed amount of attenuation. Likewise, an ear muff style often provides
a greater NRR and is generally easier to wear correctly compared to foam
ear plugs.
Lastly, one should evaluate whether non-disposable, custom ear plugs are
better option. Simple silicone or foam plugs may suffice in many situations,

but there are specific custom plugs made for certain environments. For
example, musicians often have custom ear plugs molded for them because
they spend so much time around loud music both practicing and performing.
Because these plugs are custom made to fit your ear, they will block out
dangerous noise while still allowing you to hear the music you are making.
Often times, these plugs also have capabilities to plug into the speaker
system, enhancing the musician’s ability to hear what is being performed.
If you have a partner who snores, you may be shopping for earplugs to wear
while you are sleeping. You can find ear plugs that are specifically designed
to block out snoring without keeping you from hearing your fire alarm and
alarm clock. Try out these plugs with your head tilted to the side. You’ll want
to choose a pair that fits well while lying down. There are also custom sleep
plugs that tend to better stay in place and often times provide a better NRR.
With a little time and consideration you should not have any difficulties
finding the earplugs that are right for you. If you have any questions
