Selectively Removing Colors in Adobe Camera Raw

Adobe Camera Raw is an amazing piece of software which is included in package with Adobe Photoshop. Whenever I am teaching Photoshop my second word is: Camera Raw. It is just much easier to make basic photo corrections in Camera Raw, everything is on 2 panels and it is easy to find and switch from tool to tool and from adjustment to other adjustments. Beside basic adjustments it is also easy to convert photos to Black and White or to achieve some special effects like selectively to remove colors from image what I will cover in this post.

Open image in Adobe Camera RawFirst of all you need to open an image in Camera Raw Photoshop plugin. There are several file formats you can open: raw files, dng, jpg and tiff. Also there are several ways to open image from Adobe Bridge, Mini Bridge or directly from Photoshop what will be covered in some of the next posts. In this case I will open JPG file from Mini Bridge. Find file you want to open then right/Cmd + click and choose: Open with > Camera Raw.

Make basic adjustmentFirst task in this process is to make some basic adjustments. Our goal is to selectively remove colors and to have black and white image with bouquet of flowers in color. In order to have good black and white image we must first adjust color image. I will make some basic color adjustments on Basic tab: set White Balance and adjust Exposure, Contrast, Clarity for details and +20 Vibrance to boost a bit low-saturated colors paying attention on bouquet mostly.

Selectively remove colorsNext step is to switch to HSL/Grayscale tab > Saturation. Reason to work with Saturation is because no colors will be shown without this quality of color. Since our goal is to remove some colors selectively we will remove saturation associated only with some of the colors on image. So press letter T on your keyboard or click on TAT tool icon in the toolbar at the top of window. With TAT tool selected click on color you want to remove and drag to the left. Result will be instantly visible; color will be removed as you drag. Since we are on Saturation tab, tool knows what to do: to remove saturation.

Reopen image in Camera RawNow what you see that some areas of image are not adjusted as you want? It is easy as pie to reopen image in Camera Raw and to make additional adjustments. Since image is on Smart Object layer it is enough to double click Smart Object layer what will open image in Camera Raw. In this case you will probably want to add or remove saturation on only certain portion of image. First make active Adjustments Brush. To remove color as you paint drag Saturation slider to the left, to add color drag slider to the right and leave all other sliders to defaults (in the middle). Finally when you are done click OK button.
