New signs will soon be placedto mark the permanent location ofstops along the Buses into Robins,or BiRD, route. For the past 18 months, tempo-
rary markers have been in placewhere three buses pick up anddrop off passengers each weekdaymorning and afternoon.Whiledetails are still being finalized, signinstallations are a welcome ele-ment for a program that has seenmuch growth since it began inNovember 2010.“The program has been suc-
cessful,” said John Pugh, 78thMission Support Group deputydirector. “It is slow, positivegrowth – but it is positive. Theworkforce is not only supportingthe program with the CleanAirCampaign, but also mass transit atRobins, which includes BiRD, car-
pool and vanpool programs.”Pugh, along with Bill Deaver,
778th Civil Engineer Squadronsenior general engineer, rode alongthe BiRD route May 11, markingwhere permanent signs will bepositioned at nine stops.Ridership numbers have seen
steady growth since first tracked inDecember 2010, when BiRDbegan with about 214 riders.
DuringApril, there were 1,219 rid-ers who used the service.BiRD partners with the Macon-
Bibb County TransitAuthority totake Bibb County residents to andfrom work. Since more than 60percent of Robins’military andcivilian employees live in HoustonCounty, a feasibility study is in theworks to determine additionalmass transit options into the base.
On August31, 1949, Secretary of DefenseLouis Johnson announced thecreation of an Armed Forces Dayto replace separate Army, Navy,Marine Corps and Air ForceDays. This year Armed ForcesDay will be celebrated Saturday.

BY GEN. DONALD HOFFMANAir Force Materiel Command commander
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCEBASE, Ohio – As I prepare to retire, Ionce again find myself reflecting on whatit means to serve. Foremost in my thoughtsare those who have risked their lives topreserve freedom and democracy.
Even as we are hosting barbecues onMemorial Day weekend, or just enjoyingextra time with our families, brave menand women are demonstrating their com-mitment to the United States and our wayof life as they engage in military opera-tions far from home. During the years, more than one million American Soldiers,Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, Marines and
Airmen have made theultimate sacrifice indefense of our greatnation. That number con-tinues to grow. We owethese fallen warriors ourgratitude and, though itcan never truly be repaid,we should never forgetthat debt.
Take, for example, theDoolittle Raiders, who commemoratedtheir 70th anniversary last month. Theirmission was risky even as planned, butunexpected circumstances forced a diffi-cult choice – cancel the raid or launchearly and risk running out of fuel. Theychose to launch. The Raiders dropped their
bombs, but as their fuel gauges dropped, they knew they could not reach their desig-nated airfields. Only 73 of the 80 Raidersreturned home, some after being held pris-oner for more than three years. Althoughthe strike caused relatively little physicaldamage, the selfless mission of those braveAirmen forced the Japanese to strategicallyre-position their forces and boosted themorale of America and its allies.
Indeed, our history is full of stories ofordinary people who displayed extraordi-nary heroism through their service. ThisMemorial Day, remember the ones thosestories are about – the sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisterswho bravely served and died protectingour freedoms.
Reflection, gratitude befit Memorial Day
