SELF ASSESSMENT

By: Erin Oechslin

AM I TECHNOLOGICALLY LITERATE?

Page 2: Self assesment- Erin Oechslin

ACCORDING TO DAVID RICHARD MOORE:

• Although some people limit the definition of technology literacy to the ability to use computers and technology, the meaning of being technologically literate is always changing.

•Technology literacy is needed in almost every task, it is not longer enough to know how to use technology, but how to operate and take advantage of it.

Moore compares technology to a container. He says, “…one must know how and when to open the container and add, delete or modify the contents of the container.”

Page 4: Self assesment- Erin Oechslin

•The ability to understand, adapt and take advantage of technology as it changes and evolves

•To be open to new technologies

• Using technology in order to improve learning, education, and daily life

•Being aware of changes and improvement in technology

•The ability to be critical of technology, and use technology to its full potential

I BELIEVE TO BE TECHNOLOGY LITERATE MEANS:

BUT…

THE QUESTION STILL REMAINS

AM I TECHNOLOGICALLY LITERATE?

YES.

PRIOR TO THIS CLASS I USED TECHNOLOGIES

SUCH AS

GOOGLE

FACEBOOK

BLOGS

•Since I used these technologies, it must mean I am technologically literate. Right?

•At first I thought that was true, but after this course I understand I am not technologically literate because I use technology, but because I am open to new technology.

• I can try to technologies and be critical of them.

AFTER THIS COURSE I AM USING TECHNOLOGIES

SUCH AS

TWITTER

TUMBLR

GOOGLE DOCS

Although I only started using Twitter, Tumblr and Google Docs because of Technologies and Future of Writing, I plan to continue using these new technologies.

I never saw myself as a person who would “tweet” but I currently have a Twitter app on my Blackberry and at times I will follow some of my favorite celebs, like Chelsea Handler, Perez Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Betsey Johnson and many others.

I will admit that I am still a bigger fan of Facebook, I find it more personal than Twitter. For example, on Twitter I may be following my favorite celebrities, but they still have not clue who I am. I like being able to post statuses or comments and know that people are reading them and care. Whereas on Twitter I feel like an obsessed fan!

• I never thought I would blog, but I can honestly say I liked it.

•I think blogging is a great hobby, my friend has a fashion blog and I am obsessed with it

•I do find that I like reading other people's blog rather than writing my own

•I get why people do it, sometimes for fun, to vent, to get themselves out there but I personally would rather read someone else’s blog rather then creating my own

•Blogging was probably the technology I won’t stick with, I tried it but I just didn’t like it. It felt a little uncomfortable to me.

• Google Docs is definitely the technology I am going to stick with.

•I found this so helpful when doing The White Paper

•My group was able to add their input at their own pace and at times which were suitable for them

•Being in college and often having group projects I think Google Docs is something I will definitely use in the future.

•College kids all have different lives and schedule, I will definitely suggest this next time when working with a group

Technology is always changing and always evolving, I feel in order to be technologically literate you need to be open to these new technologies. Whether you felt the technology improved your daily life or not, it is the idea of trying it. When you use technology to its full potential and are open to trying changes and advancement in technology, that is when I think a person is technologically literate.
