Self = 'Automatos' (Autos) meaning identity, distinction but no value issue:

• The Lord's Prayer: 'Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'

Luke 11:4

• Jesus: As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" Luke 24:36

• The Spirit: 'The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.' Roms 8:16

• The Father: 'No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.' John 16:27

• Grain: 'All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.' Mark 4:28

'Psuche' – Soul: Often translated 'life'

• The seat of personality & identity having value. 'For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?' Luke 9:24-25

• 'Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.'

Matt 11:29

Old Self, New Self:

'For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God' Col 3:3

'Behaving correctly'

'As a man believes in his heart so he is' Pr. 23:7

Old Man & New Man: Frequently Translated the 'self'

• 'Old' Man - 'Palaios Anthropos' - belongs to past, always as in the sense of being more or less worn out!

• 'New' Man - 'Kainos Anthropos' - belongs to the future. New in form or quality - a different nature as contrasted with old!

• ‘Put off your old self, (Palaios Anthropos) which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, (Kainos Anthropos) created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.' Eph 4:22-24

New: 'Neos' instead of ‘Kainos’ (Col. 3:9)

• New in Respect of Experience & Character:Old & New Wine: 'Neither is new (Neos) wine put into old (Palaios) wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new (Neos) wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.' Matt 9:17

• Old Leaven and New Leaven: 'Therefore purge out the old (Palaios) leaven, that you may be a new (Neos) lump, since you truly are unleavened.' 1Cor 5:7

• New in Respect of Time: ‘Young' as opposed to 'old' – The 'Old Man' stretches back to Adam; now a 'New Man' is born related to the 'New Man' who is Jesus!

The Earthly Man & the Heavenly Man:

"The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man. 1Cor 15:45-49

Biblically the ‘self’ is not a psychological term!It is a ‘relational’ term!

Process: The old man is 'still' being corrupted and the new man is 'still' being created!

• The Old Man: "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self (Palaios Anthropos), which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self (Kainos Anthropos)."

Eph4: 21-24

• Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'

John 3:6-7

• The New Man: 'Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self (Palaios Anthropos) with its practices and have put on the new self, (Neos Anthropos) which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.' Col 3:9-10

The Old Man has been crucified with Christ:

'I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who

loved me and gave himself for me.‘ Gal 2:20

John the Baptist takes Sins: Jesus takes the Sinner too: Root & Fruit!

• Old Man: 'We know that our old self (Palaios Anthropos in Adam) was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.'

Roms 6:6

• Oldness of Letter: 'But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness (Kainos) of the Spirit and not in the oldness (Palaios) of the letter.' Roms 7:6

Law is for the Old Man!

We put off the old 'man' (self) from the position of being 'the new man'!

• 'So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new (Kainos) creation. The old (Archaios) has passed away; behold, the new (Kainos) has come.'

2Cor 5:16-17

• 'For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.' 2Cor 5:14

• ‘Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.’ Roms 8:8-9

Are you convinced?Position & Process: Justification & Sanctification!

‘It Begins with Knowledge’:

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.' 2Peter 1:2-4

‘Knowledge leads to Participation’:

‘Knowing’ - we have to ‘know’:• 'Do you not know that all of us who have been

baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?' Roms 6:3

• 'For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.' Roms 6:9

• 'For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin' Roms 6:6

United in Death & in Life:

• Death: 'For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.' Roms 6:5

So we are not enslaved to sin. He who has died has been set free from sin!

• Life: 'He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.' Roms 4:25

So we can also live with Him and walk in newness of life!

'Reckoning' ('counting' or 'considering') :

• 'For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.' Roms 6:10-11

• Truth: To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, & the truth will set you free."Jn 8:31-32

• 'For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin & death.' Roms 8:2

Life defeats death!

Penalty, Power & Presence of Sin: • Penalty: 'There is therefore now no condemnation to those who

are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.' Roms 8:1

• Power: 'For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.' Roms 6:14

• Presence: 'If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.... If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.' 1John 1:8-10

Confession & Forgiveness: the key to walking in freedom from the 'power of sin!

• 'If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' 1Jn 1:9

‘Presenting’: a relational term!

• "Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness .... Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?" Roms 6:12-16

'Present' - Active Obedience:

It is a Battle of ‘Faith’: A Conflict!

'If I'm dead in Christ, then why the flesh?' Because it is not the 'flesh' that has died, we have!

• 'In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.' Heb 12:4

• 'For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.' Roms 8:13-14

• 'So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.'

Gal 5:16-17

The 'Divine Exchange‘ - Losing our ‘old’ life to find it ‘new’ in Christ: John 12:24-26

We have to 'put off' & 'put on' 'by faith'. It is an Agreement with God by Faith:

• Obedience: 'I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.' Roms 12:1-2

'Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may

gain Christ' Phil 3:8
