Self-guided tour for the edukit Neighbourhood History Walk: Mill Lake Note: Starting from Centennial Pool, these stops will take participants around the 1.3 km Mill Lake Park Loop, moving counterclockwise around the lake to complete the tour where they started. We encourage participants to use Google Maps or another map app on their phones when necessary to help find the locations. STOP 1: CENTENNIAL PARK AND CENTENNIAL POOL Where is it? Located on the western end of Mill Lake Park. Centennial Pool is on the northern section of Emerson Road. Why this name? A centennial refers to a hundred years of time. In 1958, Abbotsford’s Centennial Park and Centennial Pool were developed to celebrate the Province of British Columbia’s 100 years since joining Canadian confederation (when British Columbia became a province within Canada). The twenty five-metre Centennial Pool was one of three pools (the other two pools included a junior pool and a toddlers’ pool). On June 2, 1958, over 5,000 people gathered to see the park and pool open - what a crowded pool party! What does this name teach us about the history of Abbotsford? Abbotsford wanted to celebrate its own local community as well as its part in Canada. Walking instructions: If you’re standing at Centennial Pool facing the lake, walk to the right to get to the next stop (Trethewey House) and continue moving counterclockwise around the lake. STOP 2: TRETHEWEY HOUSE Where is it? The house is located on the east side of the lake at 2313 Ware Street. Why this name? The name “Trethewey” was the family name belonging to brothers Joseph Ogle Trethewey, Richard Arthur Trethewey, and Samuel Dunn Trethewey who owned the Abbotsford Lumber Company on the shores of the lake
